Shortly after Toronto would score, Maple Leaf Gardens announcer Paul Morris’ monotone voice would arc over Bill Hewitt’s play-by-play: “Toronto goal, scored by number 8, Ellis. Assists number 4 Kelly and number 26 Stanley. Time 6:25” in what was peak word economy.
The play-by-play crew, that I remember, was Bill Hewitt (Foster’s son) and Brian McFarlane. They had a strange on-air chemistry. McFarlane, a fantastic looking fellow who always performed well on television, would often make a great point during a play stoppage and Hewitt would always say “that’s right, Brian” in his nasal voice even if that wasn’t the correct response.
McFarlane might say (as a ridiculous example) “Punch Imlach has changed up the lines, running Keon with Billy MacMillan and Garry Monahan. Marshall is not on the bench, I didn’t see anything did you?” and Hewitt sure as hell would say “that’s right, Brian” and it was kind of mixed up for a national broadcast to be so clearly muddled.
In Montreal, Danny Gallivan and Dick Irvin were precise, informative and clearly had chemistry. In Toronto, it never was like that all during my youth. Funny what you remember.

Edmonton has enjoyed a nice run to start the month and it’s possible we see the team finish this evening in third place in the Pacific Division. If the Oilers beat the Leafs, and Seattle loses to Dallas, Edmonton will wake up Sunday two points ahead of the upstart expansion team from the Pacific northwest (Kraken with a game in hand). The game is afoot!
WORDS AND MUSIC FROM NOVEMBER 1, 2016
To borrow a phrase from the Lovin’ Spoonful, explaining Canada’s view of Toronto is like trying to tell a stranger about rock n roll. Toronto—the city—is pretty damned beautiful. A major North American metro with all of the advantages we associate with that kind of wealth, it is also a clean place—and a city where many different cultures come together to make it far more global than most (if not all) of the country.
Toronto—the one in our minds—controls the daily news, sporting and otherwise. Most of us work for giant companies whose head offices are in Toronto, and some of us have to fly there for seminars and meetings and such. There is nothing bad about the city, or the people, but much of Canada frowns when the name is brought up. You go, Toronto, with your wonderful scenery and culture and art, and you go on with your rock and roll, too. I cannot hate a city that embraced the Guess Who as its own, produced a pretty damn good group of hippie singers, blessed us with the beauty of Blue Rodeo and the grace and power of the Tragically Hip (via Kingston). You have fun running through the six, Toronto.
But get your damned hockey team off my lawn. There is no rivalry here, no history, no glory to be regaled in song. Chances are, the Maple Leafs and Oilers never meet in a series of note in my lifetime, and I have no interest in Al Gore pissing contests. You have your problem team, I have mine. There is no interest in this quarter in doing some wacko ‘Bob Costas slide rule find a way to make Michael Johnson better than Donavan Bailey’ moment. Post no bills, Toronto. Stay in your lane.
Since I wrote that item, Connor McDavid won the Art Ross Trophy four times, the Ted Lindsay three times and Hart Trophy twice. That’s nine major awards in his career. Matthews, an outstanding player, has two Rocket Richards, one Hart, one Lindsay and one Calder Trophy. That’s five major awards.
Matthews is a legit Selke Trophy candidate this season. McDavid? Art Ross, Rocket Richard, Hart, Lindsay, all either a lock or likely.
They are both great, great players. Per 82 games, Matthews is averaging 51-41-92, while McDavid is averaging 44-78-122. It’s Hockey Night in Canada. Celebrate both players, splendid and in their prime. One or both will lead their team to Stanley, and TML fans love Matthews as much as Oilers fans love McDavid.
I think doing the slide-rule Michael Johnson takes away from the brilliance of tonight’s game.
DESTINY
There’s a chance, a good one, better than in a long time, that one of these two teams makes it to the Stanley Cup Final. For me, that’s the compelling story here. I remember growing up in a house that considered the Toronto Maple Leafs superior to all other teams, making me something of a unicorn among today’s fans and observers of the game. I also knew a time when the Edmonton Oilers would roll into an NHL city and lay waste to the local team consistently. It’s been a long, long time coming but the Leafs or the Oilers could win Stanley in the spring.
I wonder why Derek Ryan seems immune to drawing boarding calls. I’ve seen him get hit so often from behind and launched head-first into the boards it’s as if it is a designed play.
I can only remember once where he actually drew a penalty over last 2 seasons and playoffs. It is awful to watch, the old vet bounced up like he was on a trampoline though. Regardless if he has all-rubber bones, those calls need to be made.
Philp goes bar down to make it 5-1.
An absolute snipe from the right circle – Lavoie like.
Lot’s of lessons to be learned, reviewed, and coached. Get busy coaches, we’re not quite there yet. It’s just one game, but it was Toronto… we just cannot lose to Toronto, too much Canadian pride involved.
Condors fight through some egregious referring and Griffith pots a breakaway goal to make it 4-1.
Anyone know why Bourgault is out tonight?
Injured. He took a high and late hit last night and didn’t return.
Tulio hurt as well.
Thank you.

Something fans might want to know:
Edmonton media requested McLeod and Desharnais for post-game interviews, 2 young players who committed key mistakes.
EDM leadership group nixed that. RNH and Kane spoke instead, along with Hyman.
That’s a team protecting its young.

As a journalist, I want to speak with the guys I want to speak with.
But you have to respect the intention here. That’s how a proper team works.
Which of you clowns downvoted this?! What’s wrong with you?
Holy hell – Demers, in his first game back, with a mammoth hit in front of the defensive net – the puck goes the other way, Griffith drops to Lavoie and he rips home another from the top of the circles – a laser.
Demers, his first game back with an ankle injury, goes down the tunnel after the massive hit.
At least Woody will now look to get Broberg and Kostin in the lineup for Tuesday night.
Someone should probably say it…
Taber-frickin-nac.
Condors with a late PP – some had work on the right side boards, Hamblin wins the battle and comes out with the puck, back to Dineen at the point, right back to Hamblin who goes cross-ice and Lavoie snaps it home from the top of the circles.
His 21st.
2-1 Condors
Shots 22-3
Condors with perhaps their best shift of the season. Cycle and cycle and cycle for maybe 90 seconds. The puck finally gets cleared but only to centre and Niemo sends it right back in – the d-men can’t change and Espo lays the d-man out behind the net causing the turnover, centers in front to Griffith who buries it
After their worst game of the year last night, the Condors have been all over SJ in the first 10 minutes – up 1-0 on 10-1 shots (and they killed the only penalty).
Summarizing!
Brind’Amour had a fine night with three assists and 11/17 (64.7%) on the dot as Quinnipiac advanced with a 6-2 win. They will face Colgate in next Friday’s single-elimination semifinal.
No soup for Mazura, Määttä or Münzenberger in losses, so their seasons are done. Will all three return for their junior seasons in the fall? We wait.
Nurse was terrible, the forwards were back to their old tricks and Skinner wasn’t good enough.
NURSE had a good game.
I will see myself out.
lol
In all seriousness, I expected the Oilers to lose tonight.
Lots of our guys are from Ontario or have ties to Toronto being former Leafs. Lots of family obligations and people hassling them for tickets. Too many distractions. Players like Nurse trying to do too much in front of friends and family.
I thought Woody should’ve started Campbell tonight … not that I’m saying Skinner was bad tonight (I didn’t think he had much chance on the goals) … as this was basically a scheduled loss anyways.
Lots of teachable moments from tonight.
I think you throw it away and move on. Nylander goal was a killer …
All good gotta be better to win Stanley
Scheifele scores for the Jets with 28 seconds to go n OT after 4 minutes of FLA having domination 3 on 3 but could not score.
I hope they are ashamed at that game
Especially Nurse and Drai
Awful
I don’t care about points, I care about driving play and taking care of details
Drai will get props for points, but was useless in helping to win. Only plays to be set up
Nurse was a problem in helping to win. Careless, slow, lost, piss poor puck control and passing, lost one on ones like Drai
Not working in my hockey world
Let’s hope no broken finger for big Vince
Maybe wrist?
ONLY the NHL allows guys to hack bones with a weapon. “You broke that guys wrist – 2 min penalty”
Even though we were up 3-1 at one point, it was not representative of flow of play. Comments from Toronto coach last game could be used for Oilers play tonight. We didn’t play with intelligence or purpose. Got what was earned..
Brutal game boys should be ashamed
They should absolutely be ashamed of that second half. Embarrassing top to bottom.
Not the result we wanted.
~ But we saw history tonight with Nuge doing the unpossible, becoming the first NHL player to get to 50 assists without getting 50 points in a season. ~
I’m just happy to know someone plugs you in every now and then and you have the power to post.
You’re right though. Very pretty 30-50-80 for Nuge tonight
Man, Mitch Marner is a helluva hockey player.
Matthews probably isn’t better than Marner, much less McDavid.
Yep had a game tonight
Yeah Marner is their best player.
As shit as tonight was, I’ve really liked Bjugstad’s game since he’s been here. Calm and smart.
The high risk pass per 60 tonight was off the charts.
Holy smokes were guys attempting insanely risky and low percentage plays.
Thats what I’m upset about if I’m Woody.
Ha, that’s the next fancy stat.
Dria will lead the league!
Most Oiler forwards had a relapse into all their old bad habits tonight.
Tough to have a relapse into new ones.
Just saying. 😉
We seemed to open up after the 3rd goal. It did not go well. They lost a little belief at times tongiht too, which is not common for this team. Partly because of ties to the city, I guess.
Self inflicted wounds
fart
At 3-1 the team thought they were home a dry and hit the showers and went for drinks
…in their sweats and sandals.
Hyman should not be on pp right now. Not good in pursuit or otherwise currently.
You can see tonight why I wanted Acciari so bad. He’s had a good game.
Am I a complete homer or was that a dangerous boarding/xchex by Toronto against Derek Ryan?
Yes it was
Right in the numbers, a couple feet from the boards and drilled him. League talks about getting that stuff out of the game but don’t even bother to call 2 never mind 5 and a game like it should be.
Weak call there.
I hate the NHL even when it benefits the Oilers.
Go vaunt go
That’s not boarding on Ryan?
Nurse is trying to be a hero tonight. On like every play. That’s always when he’s at his worst. Probably has family in the crowd tonight
PPs are so good with both of these teams that a missed call here and a cheap call there decides the game.
I don’t blame Woody for being upset with these zebras
Let’s get 2 quick ones boys!!!
Maybe the worst-coached game for Woodcroft in his career.
He’s made zero adjustments. No calming the team down. No fixing anything or a time out. Ridiculous.
You have no idea what he’s doing. Let me know when you get a feed of the bench or dressing room
Clear 4 on 4 there ref. Should have been a dive there by Foegle to even up. Note sarcasm meter high here
And then on his worst opportunity Drai scores lol. 2 open looks earlier
Might as well go0 get another goal they’ll probably give us another powerplay, and they do lol jesus christ
how is that not two penalties?
If the zebras are bent on calling penalties on the Oilers, might as well earn ’em then.
Elbows in faces. Cross-checks in the numbers every waking moment. Stuff like that.
The only way this could be a worse game for Nurse is if he takes out McDavid’s knee
Could really use the 11/7 right now to sit Nurse in favour of Broberg. Why does Woodcroft go away from what works so well?!
Condors going with the rare 10/8 tonight with Malone, Savoie, Bourgault, Tulio all out.
Murray has been good in the third. Stopped a few sure goals.
Nurse looked so good since Ekholm showed up, but tonight he’s back to bad Nurse.
is it too late to healthy scratch Nurse
The reffing is a McTravesty!
Hyman does not look like he’s at full power.
I know. Been about two weeks
maybe longer
Massive pressure and then Nurse, not only with a poor offensive play to end the pressure but it sends the puck going to the other way and Foegele forced to take a penalty.
Worst game I’ve ever seen Nurse play.
At this point in a game it’s on the Coach. If you can’t see he needs to sit down – you’re not doing your job.
I’m not witnessing a lot of great plays by him. That said, there’s few Oilers that look good tonight.
said just that to the Missus. Worst game I’ve ever seen from Nurse. And there have been a few doozies.
Nurse there turned a good chance into a fire drill the other way.
