The Oilers are playing the most important games of the season in these days, and the stories surrounding the team involve frayed nerves and contemplating major changes. It’s easy to believe these things are net negative and show the cracks and holes in the roster and an addled and or panicked front office.
In truth, these things may be good for the team. I don’t know what happened between Tristan Jarry and the leadership group, but hockey history is full of ‘conflict leads to winning’ stories. In the middle of the 1971 playoffs, Montreal Canadiens center Henri Richard basically called the head coach (Al Macneil) a dumbass. The Habs would win Stanley, with Richard in a starring role.
From a distance, this team always seems wound too tight. Captain Connor McDavid appears to eat, sleep, breathe hockey and is laser focused on winning. You know who was intense, and drove his teammates to distraction while playing for the Oilers? Chris Pronger. Did you know that Mark Messier stood up to Glen Sather in practice many years ago in an emotionally charged moment? We don’t know what we don’t know, but I tend to believe good things can come from conflict.
Now, about that move contemplated by management.

I don’t give the Oilers much of a chance tonight. I’ll watch the game, but the Avs are a wagon. In the last four games Colorado has scored 10 and allowed 5 goals at five-on-five. In the Oilers last four games, the team has scored nine goals at five-on-five. And allowed 12. I don’t think the team can clean up their issues quickly enough to beat a team like Colorado tonight. Hope I’m wrong.
DARNELL NURSE
On Saturday I wrote about Darnell Nurse and his future with the Edmonton Oilers. The article, published yesterday, is here. Later Monday, word came from Elliotte Friedman that the Oilers contemplated dealing Nurse. My piece was not a negative one, I value what Nurse brings and people far smarter than me had his estimated value at about $2 million less than his cap hit.
The news suggests Edmonton is paying attention to things like value contracts and getting optimal return on all 23 roster spots. I’m a fan of Nurse, but this past deadline (for me) could have been stronger if the team had more room to wheel. Things change. When Nurse was signed, Oscar Klefbom’s situation left the team in a tough spot. Ken Holland acquiring Duncan Keith from Chicago so the ‘Hawks could sign Seth Jones to a massive deal didn’t help, and the club could have traded Nurse.
The Nurse contract has been the subject of conversation since it was signed. In the 2027 offseason the restrictions of the NMC ease, and the team could move him then. If the player is open to moving this summer, it gives Stan Bowman a window of opportunity.
Here’s the downbeat: Edmonton is likely to take on another contract with a high number. The player coming back probably delivers less than the face value of his contract. So, before dreaming of a deal that sends Nurse and Ike Howard to Pittsburgh for a seventh-round pick, I think it’s worth suggesting that Nurse for Provorov might be closer to reality. NHL teams rarely take on a massive deal without sending similar money out. Ken Holland did it in the Duncan Keith deal and it cost the Oilers plenty.
Nurse has value. He is having a tough season. His five-on-five goal share away from Connor McDavid is 35 percent this season. That’s poor. However, that number was 54 percent one year ago. Even this season, you put Nurse with Evan Bouchard and it’s a 73 percent goal share at five-on-five.
I believe Nurse has value. I do not think the Oilers should deal him with a pile of picks just to get him off the roster. I’m sure many of you do. I also know, and have evidence in the comments section, that many of you believed getting rid of Stuart Skinner, no matter the replacement, was vital to the season. How is that working out? I’m encouraged management is looking at roster construction with a more critical eye, but the next step is to make deals that return real value when offloading a problematic contract. Can Stan Bowman make that trade?
On the Lowdown today, it’s the roundtable with four young jack o’lanterns (Declan Krueger, Donovan Paulson, Josh Fenwick, MacKenzie Mclennan) with quick wit and thunderous takes. They will run circles around an old man for two hours (noon to 2pm) on Sports 1440 in a concerted effort to run me out of radio. I’m tough as a mongoose, so they’re going to have to puck a lunch because it’ll take all day.

For all the calls for Jarry to be waived and assigned to the AHL, it’s not possible. He is not eligible for the AHL as he was not on the AHL roster on deadline day.
Sportsnet and the Avalanche fans are covering the Mackinnon ejection like it’s shocking. It’s understandable because they’re used to liberties being ignored against Canadian teams. At first I was shocked they got it right but it makes sense. Financial disaster for the rights holders if there are no canadian teams and no McDavid in the playoffs.
Usually there would be no penalty but if that play is reversed and it’s McDavid going in to the goalie he also gets a penalty for hitting the dman in the head. If its Florida and Bennett going in on the Oilers/(insert undesirable market here) the only call is interference on Nurse.
And the Oilers owe Calgary a 2nd round pick.
so HH, trying to locate these goal posts 😉 ?
Curious why the coach had McDrai and Hyman out at the end to close out the game. Is that where your new defensive center acquisition is supposed to earn his keep?
Dickonson played the most minutes at 5 on 5 among forward, McDavid 7th.
Fact is that the likes of McDavid in particular (but also Drai) out there is their best deployment – they are able to disrupt plays and get the puck back and push for the empty net goal – just out of speed and skill. Dickonson would be fine as well but its a different type of defending.
That was effing fun! Our top two were just a tad off and still scored the winner.
Burns got owned twice. Toews in photo twice. There are holes on every team.
Some fancies
At 5v5 Oilers with a 1.93 to 1.52 xGF.
Oilers take the HDCF 9-5
Avs run away with CF 51-30
In January I made the case to Fibo that Colorado wasn’t a creative team. That’s why their Powerplay sucks so hard. He scoffed and yea it’s weird to consider But the fancies show a trend. They are a volume team not necessarily a high danger team. Brute force in volume. It can be devastating but It can be defeated if you’re patient and box them out.
They can be forced to the outside and they aren’t all that creative about moving pucks around and having guys in motion after their sorties are disrupted.
The Oilers did very well in that tonight. Right now they are under strict orders to hold the formation. Let the other team hold the puck as long as you hold the formation. Dickinson is a joy to watch. Draisaitl tonight was too stationary. McDavid played it well but it also means he’s not out pressuring the point or lurking when Nuge/Hyman are pressuring the point. Less sorties each way for now.
Next step from this is allowing the wingers to pressure the half wall and the point. Then the turnovers start. Then the odd mans. They’ve done it before but lots of new guys. They have five weeks to master this. They’ve got it.
Toews made some really elite plays for Team Canada. (He came *that* close to scoring the gold-medal-winning goal.) And he also got owned by Boldy on the first goal, and made the worst giveaway of the game midway through the third.
Bouchard would have looked a lot like Toews (and Makar) on Team Canada. You live with the mistakes, because most games the good heavily outweighs the bad. (And I say this as someone who, until late January, would have hesitated to pick Bouch for Team Canada.)
Only 3 players tonight with a negative differential in high danger scoring chances:
Walman, to nobody’s surprise
Murphy, Walman’s partner; and
Connor McDavid
Something’s off with Davo
He’s playing against the best of the best. 3rd best pk, best team in the league, puts up 2 points including the game winner and you think there’s something off with him.
Talk about victim of your own success holy crow.
Mid December to Mid February, his expected goals for at 5v5 were 58.5% (above 61% from mid December to Mid January).
In the past 2 weeks? 48.6%
Plus he has barely been taking faceoffs.
I don’t think something is off. Something very clearly is.
I don’t want it to be true either, but I’d rather be clear about the issue than pretend like there isn’t one.
The lack of face-off taking is a clear tell that something isn’t right.
If Dach is out will Jarventie be recalled?
They currently do not have cap space.
I’m not sure the org hasn’t forgotten about Javentie – they’ll probably call up Hamblin if they are able on emergency in due course.
Ah the dastradly cap… Thanks
Clattenburg.
Clattenburg MIGHT play his first game in two months on Friday.
He hasn’t played any hockey, developing in the areas he was sent back down to work on, including in the couple of games he played before he inevitably got himself hurt.
Here is hoping Chaulk can get him to play hockey upon his return from the injured list.
5 on 5 TOI Leaders for Forwards:
Jason Dickinson
Leon Draisaitl
Jack Roslovic
Matt Savoie
Zach HymanL
Kasperi Kapanen
Connor McDavid
To summarize:
Positives – Oilers win, Knights lose, Kraken lose, Mammoth lose, Sharks lose, Kings lose in OT.
Negatives – Ducks win.
Heck of a night concerning the standings.
Habs gave the Leafs their 8th straight loss…
The Leafs want their top 5 protected draft pick back from Boston.
Fearsome deadline pickups both -1.
I always felt better when Roy was on the ice with VGK.
Kadri same vintage as Kane and showing similar decline re:keeping up with pace.
Huge win. Very well earned. Kudos to every Oiler and the injuries suck.
This was Oilers vs the world, do it for the fallen goalie & injured skaters, redemption game for the maligned goalie, fight together as a team and battle for the win to the whistle type of game. Feels good, hopefully they keep it up down the stretch.
Avs absolutely filthy and diving everywhere and still beat him.
Blackwood and shooting high = success
Huge!!!!
Oilers win with dignity.
Oilers shock the world, Bouchard the best defender, Mac had a melty(sans Dickinson), hockey Gords determined PDS would of been too much this evening.
Hope the Dach is ok.
Playoff hockey baby.
Excellent game. Oilers playing as they can, showing better.
Win was a nice reward
BALL-sy win in Denver! 💪🏻
#PlayLaBambaBaby
Huge win. Rough to loose three bodies though.
Good job by the Oilers to beat the Avholes and their 50 centres.
I don’t believe it.
I’m going to be so tired tomorrow, but it was totally worth it.
Same. Best game of this regular season for me.
The Oilers won…?
But.. moneypuck said…
The strength of schedule said..
No…. this can’t be.
I don’t know if there is a source for this kind of info, but I would guess betting-wise, more money was lost on this game than money won. No one (or very few) was saying the Oilers had even a chance, we beat the money line.
Good grief – Connor. Missing the net, sure, it happens but eat it in the corner, don’t throw it out blind to the slot.
Some baffling decisions by the dynamic duo.
Trying just a bit too hard me thinks.
Late on the empty netter but we’ll take the 2 points..!!!!!!!
Huge!
Yuge!
That was playoff hockey. Massive win for the whole team.
Wow. Monster win!!! Season changing?????
Is this the game that galvanizes the team? That settles Jarry after a solid performance? We don’t know today, but we might know at the end of the trip.
Good for Jarry.
Could Edmonton call a timeout after Colorado to give our side a longer breather? Not sure rules on that..
Can’t call a TO after an icing – they are lucky the Avs did there.
That’s two terrible icings by Ekholm – both times he had time and space. My goodness.
It is hard to believe he did that twice in a row
Ekholm sure liking to ramp up the suspense there.
It’s Better than the 5 previous soft attempts that were just passes directly to Avs D
Should be defensive end for Colorado, clearly intentional offside.
I thought the same but there wasn’t much push back
Wow so many times we have possession and don’t get the puck out.
Nashville with the empty netter to beat Seattle
Freddy is skating and is skating quickly? Keeping up with Makar? Bless the heavens
A resurgence of Frederick’s game is manna from heaven.
Great deadline pickup!! Just took a year.
It’s still early but Jarry has been good coming in. Some big saves and goal he had zero chance.
Missed first 1.5 periods.
Besides Ingram, who else is injured?
Dach and Emberson
Thanks. Saw the TOI before your post.
Dach and Emberson?
Frederick and Samanski out there with 6 minutes left in a one goal game.
Highly playalble!
Hopefully KK sees the light
Second slowest icing in history
You beat me to that 😂
Fred’s got some pep in his step. Good to see.
Like Nurse sticking up for his goalie there. This could be a game that bonds this team.
there is a feel good story being written if they can hang on…
He should be handing out cross checks like that every time an opposing player is net front. Been rare this season
Jarry!
There was no doubt the Oilers were going to be SH – Kap needed to know that and be safer in the offensive zone.
Oh Kapanen with the killer offensive zone penalty. Dumb dumb dumb
Poor call, but you knew absolutely the refs we’re gonna give one to the Colorado shit birds
Slowest icing in history
Followed up by a make up call
shoooo… oh. well done.
That was big.
That McD spin *chefs kiss*
Lookie that Connor shoots and look what happens!
OH CAPTAIN MY CAPTAIN!! 🚨
Beauty.
Fiiiiiinally
