I think Clifford sums up my feeling about the Oilers currently. This team is like Forrest Gump’s box of chocolates, you never know what you’re going to get.
WHAT TO EXPECT IN MARCH
- At home to: OTT, CAR (Expected 1-1-0) 1-1-0
- On the road to: VEG, COL, DAL, STL (Expected 2-2-0) 2-1-1
- At home to: NAS, SJS, FLA, TBAY (Expected 2-1-1) 2-2-0
- On the road to: UTA, VEG (Expected 1-1-0) 1-0-0
- At home to: ANA, SEA (Expected 1-1-0)
- Expected Record: 7-6-1, 15 points in 14 games
- Actual Record: 6-4-1
- Season Record: 35-28-9, 79 points in 72 games
This is it now, we’re here. There’s no way out, it’s time to stand and deliver. A win tonight for Edmonton means the Oilers have a three-point edge on Vegas with both teams holding nine more opportunities to collect points. It would not put second place in the Pacific to bed, but it would give more clearance between the only good Alberta team and also-rans like the Los Angeles Kings and Seattle Kraken. It’s a big damned game.
Lots of talk these days about the Oilers defense and how it is being deployed. We don’t have much evidence since the trade deadline, but do have enough to measure how Paul Coffey is doling out playing time. Here are the minutes against elites, by defenceman, compared to TOI before the deadline (in brackets):
- Evan Bouchard 8:51 (up from 6:17 before the deadline)
- Mattias Ekholm 8:10 (up from 6:15 before the deadline)
- Connor Murphy 7:27 (arrived at deadline)
- Darnell Nurse 7:25 (up from 5:53 before the deadline)
- Jake Walman 5:16 (down from 5:34 before the deadline)
- Ty Emberson 4:53 (up from 3:27 before the deadline)
- Spencer Stastney 3:16 (same as pre-deadline, 3:13)
This can seem confusing, because everyone but Jake Walman is either flat, up, or up substantially. PuckIQ measures elite talent based on individual quality. So, when the Oilers are running through a period where teams have more impact players, the TOI versus elites increases. What we can takeaway is that Coffey has a clear delineation of his three pairings: Ekholm-Bouchard, then Nurse-Murphy, then the third pair. Bouchard has earned strong Norris consideration but he won’t get it. Bias is a thing. What are the outscoring results? Current results (pre-deadline results):
- Bouchard 54% DFF; 86 Pct Goals (55% DFF, 60 Pct Goals)
- Ekholm 51% DFF; 75 Pct Goals (56% DFF, 59 Pct Goals)
- Murphy 37% DFF; 0-4 goals
- Nurse 43% DFF; 29 Pct Goals (49% DFF; 50 Pct Goals)
- Jake Walman 31% DFF; 43 Pct Goals (42% DFF; 46 Pct Goals)
- Ty Emberson 44% DFF; 50 Pct Goals (48% DFF; 47 Pct Goals)
- Spencer Stastney 14% DFF; 0-3 goals (47% DFF; 25 Pct Goals)
Bouchard and Ekholm shine like diamonds even with the increased work, but Nurse-Murphy are struggling versus elites. That’s going to be a problem. I like Ty Emberson, he’s a guy who should be able to deliver on a third pair with a healthy Walman. I’m not certain the Oilers can fix the second pair, but would suggest the team experiement with Nurse-Bouchard, Ekholm-Murphy.
We’ll see. On the Lowdown today, we’ll talk with Bagged Milk from Oilers Nation, visit the Vegas side and talk opening day baseball and March madness. Noon to 2pm, Sports 1440 and You Tube.

Maybe it’s just me but I’ve seen some real smart plays by Jarventie. OP you’ve been banging this drum for a while now. Positive arrows
He could have had a couple points last night – one solid forecheck and then pass to Emberson in the high slow who had it blocked.
He’s one that can play that fourth line style (physical offensive zone cycle/forecheck game) and add some skill.
Unfortunately, he may be back down as Lazar is eligible to come of LTIR for Sat and accounts are he’s healthy.
They have the cap room to keep all the call ups until Drai is back but they are all on emergency so they would all have to be transitioned to regular recall in order to keep any emergency recall.
I’ve been impressed with his play too. t’s good that these ‘kids’ are getting NHL time when the games have a playoff feel and officiating 😏 We’ll need everybody for a playoff run. What a story it would be to have success after such an uneven season.
Credit to the coach down in Bako. Every player who seems to come up here is playing responsible defensively, forechecking hard (well, the forwards, anyway), and choosing the smart play more often than not. Possession-first hockey.
Just arrived in Lisbon with the family for spring break, didn’t get to watch but happy to see another solid effort.
In the last quarter of the season they remain undefeated against the Pacific and the playoff bubble teams.
Also, I didn’t see any love on the MSM for McDavid’s 50th OT point, tying Crosby for the NHL record. Did they mention it?
Well, that sure as heck worn’t no pillow fight. Love this new version of our Oilers. Bigger, faster, a 2-way conscience, no lack of skill (even with big Leon missing), improved D-play, satisfying goaler performance . . . the we ain’t takin’ no shite from nobody attitude will bode well in the playoffs. Gotta stay disciplined defensively while still playing their skilled cycle offensive game. Feeling better about our coaching… as long as we can keep playing a winning style.
Noticed Samanski put the pick on Savoie’s man giving him space to wind up that laser beam. Little smart plays. We got a player.
Thanks Dementor.
Woot! We’re going streaking!
Savoie with some sneaky good work on the game winner, not letting the winger get out to Bouch.
At what point will Bouchard start being discussed for the Norris? It’s beyond ridiculous he’s not the favourite?
It is being discussed but the stupid narrative is out there hard still.
USA today has him as their second favourite behind Werenski.

NHL.com panel has him 4th.

The house doesn’t always win.
Evan “worth every penny” Bouchard
Ingram deserved the win. One of the best goaltending performances on this season. The reffing was an embarrassment for the NHL.
Super PK in OT and the Bouchbomb wrister. WOW!!!!
Moneypuck Favourite underlined.
EDM @ VGK
Never in doubt
well almost never. Great penalty kill in OT
2 points up with the tiebreaker and the next head to head at home.
Slotting in at #2 in the Pacific wouldn’t be a bad spot, this Vegas team gives up a lot.
Ingram with a great game as well. Some big saves and especially on pk in ot
Bouchbombs over Vegas!
EVAN ALMIGHTY! 🚨
WIN CITY!!
Holy crap what a wrister!!!!!
Still, he was at the top of the circle, it was a wrister, and Hill saw it the whole way. Even with a great shot, you need your goalie to stop that in that moment. Didn’t look like he had his angle right to me.
That’s a Mike Bossy snapshot.
Way to go Bouch! Norris calibre.
Bouchard 20th who would have thought.
Bouchard!!!!
wooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooot!
Needed to add more “o’s” to the post?
;))
And the Bouuuuuuuuch Bomb!!!
Wow dodged a bullet there! Vegas with all kinds of pressure. Bouch !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Just like they drew it up
give up a penalty, stay in their end the whole time, then win a faceoff with 2 minutes left
Massive pk by those 3 and the goalie!
That’s a joke right. How can anyone comment or talk about this game with a straight face.
Nice dive.
Wasn’t much of a hold. Typical.
That’s what they use the whistle for after prison rules for the rest of the game
That’s a horrendous penalty to call there after the rest of this game.
Total BS officiating
Interesting wrinkle with Dickinson. He’s not been great at draws since acquiring.
Happy to be wrong
Not winning that in regulation is just brutal.
That is a bad Vegas team. The Oilers got sucked into playing on the outside and not generating near enough good chances.
For the first two periods, I agree. But that’s not a bad Vegas team. Their forwards are a unit and their D isn’t as well-oiled as it used to be, but it actually has more talent now. Their goaltending is really their only major weakness. But it’s a massive weakness.
Massive save by Ingram!
Jack in overtime.
Ouch – taking a shot like that off the face mask hurts like crazy. Hill is going to be feeling that tomorrow.
That one stunned Hill time to pepper him with shots from everywhere.
I’m less liking the half wall shot 14 has been taking frequently. It has not been effective, and often he’s missing the net and it clatters all the way to the other end.
Hit the net.
Play should not have been stopped there.
This crowd sounds like they’re watching a blowout loss, not a tie game late in the third.
If you’re Vegas they just let you do it
Kapanen got hauled down and no call
Ridiculous no call. Refs in full playoff mode
Ekholm really having a rough game.
Better to defend from the offensive zone and much of the last two periods has been Vegas controlling the puck
1st and 3rd goals Oilers just chased the puck and nobody picked up a stick. 😒
Ekholm with a poor pinch and late to get back.
Ekholm having his worst game of the year tonight.
Some poor decisions to start this period and it’s tied again.
Ekholm once again not looking great on that goal against.
The little Barbashev of horrors
Ekholm has had a part to play in every Vegas goal
Anaheim 3-2 in OT over Calgary
The Falmes suck.
ANA scores with 1 second left in OT on the power play
