2019-20 Game 20: Oilers at Sharks

The first time San Jose and the Oilers played an NHL regular season game it was November 1991 and the expansion Sharks hammered the Damphouse-Manson-Mellanby Oilers. Since then, I never count on a win against the Oakland Seals 2.0. Call it the curse of Gilles Meloche.

THE ATHLETIC!

The Athletic Edmonton features a fabulous cluster of stories (some linked below, some on the site). Great perspective from a ridiculous group of writers and analysts. Proud to be part of The Athletic, less than two coffees a month offer here.

  • New Lowetide: Analyzing Dave Tippett’s defensive usage and what the Oilers will do when Adam Larsson returns
  • Lowetide: What’s going on with the Bakersfield Condors?
  • Daniel Nugent-Bowman: Ryan Nugent-Hopkins shines, mad props for Leon Draisaitl and more to like as the Oilers beat the Devils

OILERS AFTER 20 GAMES

  • Oilers in 2015: 7-12-1, 15 points; goal differential -8
  • Oilers in 2016: 11-8-1, 23 points; goal differential +7
  • Oilers in 2017: 7-11-2, 16 points; goal differential -13
  • Oilers in 2018: 9-10-1, 19 points; goal differential -9
  • Oilers in 2019: 12-5-2, 26 points; goal differential +12

The Oilers are in a great spot now but the season is long and slumps will occur. The 7-1-0 start is the key to this record, if the Oilers can play November a little above Bettman .500 the U.S. Thanksgiving standings rule (75 percent chance of making the playoffs if you are in position) should favor Edmonton.

OILERS IN NOVEMBER

  • Oilers in November 2015: 2-4-0, four points; goal differential -4
  • Oilers in November 2016: 2-3-1, five points; goal differential -4
  • Oilers in November 2017: 3-3-0, six points; goal differential -2
  • Oilers in November 2018: 2-4-0, four points; goal differential -6
  • Oilers in November 2019: 3-1-1, seven points; goal differential +7

The goal differential is stunning compared to the previous four seasons. Lots of good defense and goaltending in those numbers. The next two weeks are massive. If Edmonton can avoid a slump, December will arrive with everyone in good spirits. No Donner party, no sad Bonnie Raitt songs, no “Nadir’s Raiders” posts from this blog. Music!

WHAT TO EXPECT IN NOVEMBER?

  • On the road to: PIT (Expected 0-1-0) (Actual 1-0-0)
  • At home to: ARI, STL, NJD (Expected 2-1-0) (Actual 1-1-1)
  • On the road to: ANA, SJS (Expected 1-0-1) (Actual 1-0-0)
  • At home to: COL, DAL (Expected 1-1-0)
  • On the road to: SJS, LAK, VEG, ARI, COL (Expected 2-3-0)
  • At home to: VAN (Expected 1-0-0)
  • Overall expected result: 7-6-1, 15 points in 14 games
  • Current results: 3-1-1, 7 points after five games

A win tonight and the Oilers are over halfway to my predicted point total with eight games to find six points. In fact, with the 12-5-2 start Edmonton could go 30-30-3 from this point to the end of the season and finish 42-35-5, 89 points. It’s a good spot.

TOP 20 PROSPECTS

I’m preparing this winter’s top 20 prospects and have been struck by the fact all of last year’s top 20 returns. There will be some movement as three or four new arrivals from the 2019 draft will push a few players out. Looking at the top five and I think that might remain the same (although in a different order).

Did I ever tell you about my idea to go all the way back to 1979 and do a top 20 prospects for each season? I abandoned it because it’s doubtful anyone cares, but as a curio I’ll drop one of them here. The idea is to rank these players where they would have been slotted at the time, not where they would be ranked after their careers. Here’s 1980 summer:

Coffey was the big pick in summer ’80, Anderson played for the Canadian Olympic Team and Seattle Breakers of the WHL (7, 5-5-10). Jari Kurri was playing well in a pro league (Liiga) in Europe, Poddubny caught fire after a mid-season OHL trade and Tom Roulston one of two quality players on the farm team in Houston.

JESSE

Young Puljujarvi stated yesterday (if google translate is correct) that the plan is to stay in Finland and play in the Liiga all year. I’m pleased he made the decision and it is my belief this increases the chances he returns to Edmonton next fall. JP is playing a more confident game and having success, so whatever else happens he is increasing his own value. For Ken Holland, there’s no hurry and if the offers don’t get better there’s a very good chance we are at the same spot next November. I think there’s a sliver of a chance the player side realizes the situation next August and signs a deal with the Oilers. Nothing is working, Holland won’t budge. Stubborn mule! Sometimes a stubborn mule wins the day. Just saying.

LOWDOWN WITH LOWETIDE

At 10 this morning TSN1260 it’s been an eventful 24 hours. Jonathan Willis from The Athletic will join us at 10:20 to talk Oilers in San Jose, Jesse Puljujarvi, fall trades and the return of Adam Larsson. A special appearance from Steve Lansky of BigMouthSports follows, we’ll talk about the Don Cherry firing and what’s next for HNIC. At 11:05, Corey Graham joins us to talk about the Oil Kings loss to Tri-City Americans and the brilliance of Beck Warm.

Oh and add to that the 154th pick Marino who is now playing in the NHL.. What a draft year for the oil !!

    Woodguy:
    OriginalPouzar,

WG’s proposed structure of the Bear deal doesn’t make sense to me. The higher salary in the last year will not effect a future contract as no qualifying offer mechanism will be applicable – Bear will be a UFA at its expiry. In fact, I think the opposite structure, with a front-loaded deal makes more sense as that would be favorable for the player and will also make the contract more tradeable in the declining years, if they desired to move the player.

Almost every long term contract for a RFA Dmen is structured with lower salary in the RFA years and higher in the UFA years.

Its the way they keep the AAV down.

I realize that these days they front load it to make it more attractive to sign and that’s fine.

    I’m only worried about AAV

Is this true? I’m not sure. I only checked two – Morrissey and Lindell and both had lower salaries in the expiring years.

The AAV can be kept down just as easily structuring it the opposite way – front loaded as opposed to back loaded – the calculation is the same – the player would prefer it and it makes the contract more tradeable in the end.

    Year 1 – $5M
    Year 2 – $3M
    Year 3 – $1M

    AAV – $3M

    Year 1 – $1M
    Year 2 – $3M
    Year 3 – $5M

    AAV – $3M

Nothing would change if we increased the term to 7 years and extrapolated.

    Am I missing something here?

You made my HNIC and life more alive over many years. Thank You!

    Sail On Don, Sail On

  4. Reja says:

OriginalPouzar: I’m not sure they need to be worried about buying loyalty from Gagner or Manning – these are two players that will not be back next year and, if they could simply remove the player and their contract for nothing, the organization would certainly do it.

Nygard, is his mom even here?

I believe Tippett is trying to keep everyone involved and the bottom 6 hungry. Wouldn’t it be neat if Gagner or Nygard rewards Tippett with a goal tonight.

  5. Scungilli Slushy says:

Reja: Josh Anderson on Columbus is RFA next year he only has a goal and a assist in 11 games Columbus is having a rough year. If I’m Holland I’m offering JP plus Seth’s brother for Anderson who I believe scores 30-35 goals on the first line.

Why offer more than JP if the guy is showing less game than Jesse this year?

    Buy low. Sell high.

  6. OriginalPouzar says:

Reja: I believe Tippett is trying to keep everyone involved and the bottom 6 hungry. Wouldn’t it be neat if Gagner or Nygard rewards Tippett with a goal tonight.

I get that but I was responding to the narrative about mom’s in the crowd and creating loyalty which I think has nothing to do with the 3 lineup changes.

I’m all for Nygard for Granlund.

The other two changes not so much but one is much more disappointing than the other.

Oh well, it is what it is – Go Oilers!

  7. jp says:

hunter1909: Keep him on a short lead, like Kassian.

    I agree with this.

In general I love the idea of going long on deals for young players to keep the AAV down. It’s how you get home run deals on key players.

But in Bear’s case. It’s 19 games. He was a big time long shot to make the team coming into camp. And the player himself has admitted a light bulb regarding commitment and off ice training went off within the last 6 months. He looks real and spectacular, but there’s risk her. I’d at very least wait until the end of the year to offer him $20M and in this case a bridge deal is probably the play.

  8. OriginalPouzar says:

    Klefbom/Benning start as a pair.

    YES!!!!!

  9. docweb says:

I must say…Darnell gets a few ” atta boys” from me for the only pro who I have ever seen singing the O Canada on a regular basis

  10. jp says:

    Hold on. Klefbom-Benning?

Edit: Hopefully Matt does Mrs. Benning proud.

  11. OriginalPouzar says:

Bear with a tough first couple of shifts with a couple of own-zone giveaways.

  12. drglen says:

nygaard a bit rusty.. to be expected.

  13. Munny says:

    Sluggish start

  14. Munny says:

    waved off?

  15. OriginalPouzar says:

4th line caved twice in two shifts and I think the Sharks just scored.

Gagner and Nygard are poorer defensive players than Granlund and Haas.

  16. Munny says:

    nope

  17. drglen says:

burns scores, you could see that one coming.. but.. did it go off both posts and out

  18. OriginalPouzar says:

Its interesting that Manning is playing 3RD and Russell 3LD – Tippett really wants to keep Russell on his left side – with good reason.

  19. Professor Q says:

Really weird passing thus far. No one is on their game tonight.

  20. drglen says:

both new guys minus 1 minutes in?

  21. drglen says:

    he shouldnve started sheehan line

  22. Material Elvis says:

That new third (fourth?) line is getting crushed early.

  23. Oil2Oilers says:

Sharks seem to have prepared well and are intercepting Oilers breakout passes.

  24. GordieHoweHatTrick says:

    Brent Burns Oil Again

  25. Munny says:

Pretty trappy structure by the Sharks.

  26. jp says:

pts2pndr: Actually Lagesson has actually played as right D partner with Klebom as a second pairing for Sweden. It was only for one tournament but as I recall they didn’t do too bad. My thought is that with Jones playing his weak side you haven’t gained sufficiently to justify the change.

I don’t think this ever happened.

  27. drglen says:

im concenred about our 3rd 4th vs the thorton line……

agree passing is off.. oilers doing the old ‘wait for the game to get urgent’ trick.

Have we even seen sheehan line yet… we need Shee and Arch to settle this game down.

  28. drglen says:

russl up the boards to the opposition play… icing.. d zone face off.

  29. jp says:

    Ooof. Big hole early.

Bottom 6 not looking good so far.

  30. Munny says:

Can’t win this game playing this way

  31. Oil2Oilers says:

Wow Oilers are in trouble need a reset or this will be a long night

  32. drglen says:

Pull goalie… 2 goals in what 3 shots… team did not come to play. reset now.

  33. OriginalPouzar says:

Weak play by Khaira essentially passing the puck directly to the point and a few seconds later Sheahan ignores Kane and leaves him wide open for the rebound.

  34. russ99 says:

There’s the Klefbom – Benning special.

  35. drglen says:

khair with great rush and moves, then gets to the net and it’s like ‘oh shit.. what the heck am I suppose to do now’.. … ( weak shot into pads)

  36. Suntory Hanzo says:

Sharks stadium announcer sounds like the Oilers old one they had for decades.

    – Ah: one of my hobby horses: there is nothing patriotic about a professional sports team from one town, playing against a team from another town, in sports stadums subsidized massively by the local tax-payers for the most part, owned by wealthy individuals or corporations who are trying to maximize profit, played by professional athletes from many countries.

    – I get how by selling to the peasants, who have shelled out hundreds of dollars for entertainment (or being comped by some company), they can trick them into thinking that watching their sports team is a patriotic event, to lessen the blow and make them feel part of something bigger.

    – Its a North American professional sports phenomena to package patriotism (propoganda?) with for profit league sports. Never made sense to me, evan as a kid.

    – Anyway GOILERS!!! (not Oh Canada, go Oilers: that’s silly IMO)

  38. jp says:

Damn I thought that was in.

    So close Russell from Nygard.

  39. OriginalPouzar says:

    Did that not go in?

I thought P. Russell scored there but I guess it was the post – damn.

  40. Munny says:

So close for PRusty> Had the goalie beat.

  41. russ99 says:

    That sure looked in.

  42. Material Elvis says:

    G-R-N line almost scored.

  43. drglen says:

We need sombody with jump and hop in this game, (Haas) and someone with better D zone IQ and coverage.. (granland)

we need a goal right now

check the review.. I think that went off the center back post and out?

  44. Gerta Rauss says:

    that did look in

    -nope

  45. OriginalPouzar says:

Damn, that was the inside of the post – unlucky for P. Russell – he may never score.

  46. jp says:

I really wish that Sheahan line would score just to break the goose eggs.

  47. drglen says:

russell… agreed may never score.. that’s about 5 this year..

  48. OriginalPouzar says:

Khaira made a very poor defensive zone play on the 2nd goal but he’s made a couple strong rushes for solid shots on net.

Oilers with some nice push back since the 2nd goal.

  49. Munny says:

I feel like we’ve heard the names of the bottom 6 far more in this period than we did in the first period last game.

  50. Material Elvis says:

Well I hear that Castle Rock season 2 is out….

  51. Younger Oil says:

Really baffled with Tippett’s lineup changes after one of the best games of the season.

Especially running a 4th line that doesn’t have an actual center.

Awful start in a hugely important game.

  52. jp says:

Oh my. One of those nights.

Needed Persson in the lineup I guess.

Actually a nice tip, didn’t see that in real time.

  53. OriginalPouzar says:

    Ughhh, 3-0 is not good.

Mr. Smith’s save percentage taking a beating.

Manning can’t make a play on the boards then its in the net via a tip seconds later – wow.

  54. Oil2Oilers says:

I am glad I poured 3 fingers of Gin not 2

  55. drglen says:

nothing from D moving puck except for Bear tonight….

and the giveaway results in another goal..

  56. Material Elvis says:

Disappointing. Maybe guilty of over thinking things.

  57. Réal Goudenyéu says:

This game must have been marked down as a loss on the schedule because the team looks utterly disinterested.

  58. drglen says:

great goal marleau.. but the wheels have come off..

I’m blaming the coach on this one.. wrong substitutions.

  59. Material Elvis says:

    Remenda is giddy.

  60. OriginalPouzar says:

Anther nice rush by Khaira opening up a lane for a solid Sheahan shot.

Next goal is key – lets do this.

  61. OilClog says:

This looks like the Pat Quinn Oilers had a baby with the Dallas Eakins Oilers

  62. OriginalPouzar says:

I would implore the coaching staff to not put the new 4th line on with the new 3rd pairing – its happened a few times and its getting killed.

  63. drglen says:

oilers can play with these guys when they skate …

  64. gogliano says:

    Material Elvis:
    Remenda is giddy.

I switched over to the SJS feed for a more neutral colour guy.

  65. hags9k says:

They don’t appear to have the legs or the fight tonight.

  66. Bulging Twine says:

    Koskinen 7-1-1

    Smith 5-4-1

  67. Professor Q says:

I don’t understand why they keep trying to do the weird flip passes to no one, except to the Sharks players.

  68. drglen says:

    OriginalPouzar:
I would implore the coaching staff to not put the new 4th line on with the new 3rd pairing – its happened a few times and its getting killed.

russel with manning, blown away like playing the Nate Ooks there…….

    stop the sinking ship please..

  69. npanciroli says:

This is completely deserved with those lineup decisions.

  70. Ford Prefect says:

Every player -1 except McDavid, Draisaitl, Kassian

  71. drglen says:

gogliano: I switched over to the SJS feed for a more neutral colour guy.

yes, the sharks feed is, calling it like it is, but basically neutral

  72. drglen says:

    benning with bear now

  73. OriginalPouzar says:

Nygard takes a terrible penalty behind the Sharks net.

Not sure if taking two plus defensively responsible players from the fourth line and replacing them with two not so great defensive players was the right call.

Noone has been good (except maybe Khaira save his one blunder) but that 4th line has been awful and the last few games the 4th line was very good.

  74. drglen says:

nyggard with a high stick penalty in the offensive zone…. well that’s just great.

  75. GordieHoweHatTrick says:

    Material Elvis:
    Remenda is giddy.

He makes me want to hurt him.

GordieHoweHatTrick: He makes me want to hurt him.

lol time to go make a coffee. that’s what I do.

  78. Derek says:

My feed is a bit blurry but that third pairing sure pass the puck like Igor Ulanov and Corey Cross. What year is it?

  79. Crazy Pedestrian says:

Don’t think we’re coming back on this one guys…
I guess maybe next time coach sticks to the winning lineup. He has to after this one.

  80. drglen says:

russell saves goal on block there..

  81. Munny says:

    npanciroli:
This is completely deserved with those lineup decisions.

With the poor play tonight, GA were coming regardless.

Maybe we can sneak one back on this four by and PP.

On a corporate basis I agree… would be completely happy if they never played either anthem prior to games
On an individual basis though it still warms my old heart to see a young person join in the anthem rather than stare at their skates or rock back and forth as if nothing at all was happening

  83. drglen says:

    4 x 4 goal would be nice here….. tsto

  84. Munny says:

That might be our second scoring chance of the period.

  85. drglen says:

well i think the bleeding has been stopped at least

  86. Harpers Hair says:

I don’t see an 85 yo being that attractive to that demographic
Don’t like what finally put the nail in the coffin
But I’m surprised he lasted this long

You apparently don’t understand the Canadian telecommunications market.

Rogers is an integrated company that not only owns hockey rights but is also one of the major cell phone and cable TV providers in the country.

If you piss off even one million customers you just don’t lose hockey advertising revenue but you also forego millions in revenue from other sources.

Given that Rogers is already bathing in red ink in the NHL TV contract, they are also risking millions in revenue from their other operations.

Rogers reportedly has already lost ten of thousands of cable and cell phone customers in one day.

  87. Munny says:

Oil close with their best two minutes of the game.

  88. Oil2Oilers says:

The score and shots flayer the Oilers play in that period

  89. OilClog says:

Sportsnet should make Remenda the new coach in the corner and share the joy of the Sharks with the entire national audience, Oiler fans don’t deserve this legend all to themselves.

  90. drglen says:

    Holy shit what a fiasco.

    suggestions,

play macdavid line 50% the rest of the way..

Put benning back with russell so at least you don’t get scored on. Manning can tread water with Klef

    on that note

Play BEAR with nurse as much as possible.

    Do not play 4th line.

More shifts for third line, with McDavid taking the place of Sheehan or archibold for short shifts.

If we get one back in 2nd, we can come back.

of note, shark goals have been lasers… .. but the sequences could have been prevented. Poor breakouts, and missed D zone assignments…

I dont’ think we’ve won any faceoffs either..

  91. Munny says:

Flatter than a three-week old fountain pop in the parking lot of a Saskatchewan 7-11.

  92. Lowetide says:

    After One:

    3-0 San Jose
    9-8 Edmonton shots
    18-15 Edmonton Corsi five-on-five
    ==

Oilers slept through much of that period, but credit also due the Sharks who looked murderous for several minutes when the game was in doubt. Oilers coverage was awful, they recovered and were perhaps unlucky to not score there.

I don’t think they’re coming back but this team has surprised for much of the first 19.

  93. hags9k says:

Evander Kane in the first intermission. Oh Sportsnet you’re hilarious.

  94. drglen says:

it can be said that we miss granland tonight.. I thought we might… he is very crafty positionally and defensively, good stick good anticipation.

Need much more from Sheehan. after a breakout game last game, he’s been very poor this period.

Is Chaisson in this game? he needs to amp it up. Oilers need some pushback here, including physical pushback. Chaissons a big man. Gosh I wish Khaira would punish people a bit more and win some corner battles.

Edit: that deflection (and the Marleau one) was tough though.

  101. Oil2Oilers says:

Surely you pull the goalie after 4 goals on 10 shots

  102. OriginalPouzar says:

Hmmmm, 4-0 is going to be tougher to come back from.

Not sure what Neal is doing below his goal line in the own zone…..

  103. drglen says:

    terrible, terrible, terrible..

  104. jp says:

Everyone but Draisaitl a minus now I guess.

  105. drglen says:

    shooting gallery midget hockey night

  106. leadfarmer says:

Harpers Hair: You have no idea how embedded Cherry is in Canada’s hockey culture.
Bill O’Reilly and Fox News are a fleeting American embarrassment.

Fine so he’s a disgraced Bob Barker
A non disgraced bob barker was forgotten quickly
It sounds like I’m not the only person that thinks he was past his prime
People always who is this Canadian hockey Liberace that shows up on their tv during the playoffs

  107. leadfarmer says:

    Oil2Oilers:
Surely you pull the goalie after 4 goals on 10 shots

    Nah. Rest your starter

  108. Munny says:

need a glimmer of light at the end of the tunnel

  109. Munny says:

why did Drai not shoot that.

  110. jp says:

That was an ugly pass by Neal lol.

  111. Harpers Hair says:

leadfarmer: Fine so he’s a disgraced Bob Barker

I would respectfully suggest you keep your American arrogance to yourself.

  112. Munny says:

Sharks gonna shutout the Oil. Guaranteed. Book it.

  113. Réal Goudenyéu says:

I hope the morale gained by letting players play in front of their mothers outweighs the morale lost by losing 6-0.

  114. Oil2Oilers says:

I stopped consuming NationNetwork content because of pop up video adds, plus LT and Willis’s work was my primary attraction. I wish them no ill will, I have just moved on.

As the hockey game is painful to watch the revolt out of Flame/Canucks Nation right now seems amusing. Wonder if it will go full Deadspin death cycle in the course of an evening?

  115. Material Elvis says:

Well at least the thread is about to get entertaining…

  116. VanIsleOil says:

Material Elvis: If Remenda was a dog, I picture him as a Shar pei.

    haha…..needed a good laugh…this team effort tonight is a laugh so far…

  117. Crazy Pedestrian says:

    drglen:
    shooting gallery midget hockey night

Well, we shutout NJ and then proceeded to spank ANA by 4 goals while every other pacific team lost. so by the law of #becauseoilers, oilers need to give it all back.

  118. jp says:

If there was ever a night to yank that manky beard it’s tonight. I do miss Maroon a bit.

  119. Wilde says:

Bad time to post something like this but I’ll expand on it tomorrow or after the game or something.

Standouts from the first run of zone-entry analysis:

    – Jones with more than double the carry-in per game average of the next closest regular D on the team; 1.31 to Bouchard’s 0.62

    – Carry-in per games by forwards looks like this (from now on in these lists I’m doing arbitrary cutoffs):

    Gambardella – 1.86
    Malone – 1.75
    Marody – 1.67
    Yamamoto – 1.46
    Currie – 1.46
    Peluso – 1.30
    McLeod – 1.15

    – Dump-in recoveries looks how you’d expect; quick explanation on my scoring: I award split-credits on all recoveries that aren’t actually recovered by one player. For example, if F1 bears down on the opposition retriever, and they make a bad pass and F2 wins the puck battle between the recipient and the Condors take possession, F1/F2 get one credit each. If F1 just gets to the puck first outright, or just puts the retriever in the dumpster and takes the puck (both rare) they get two credits. That logic covers pretty much every forecheck

    Recoveries per GP:

    Yamamoto – 4.54 (!)
    Peluso – 2.80
    Gambardella – 2.71
    Iacobellis – 2.60
    Currie – 2.54
    Cave – 2.13
    Benson – 1.92
    Marody – 1.92

    McLeod – 0.85

And now, controlled entries with passes (successful pass-in or carry-ins that result in a completed pass with possession):

    Yamamoto – 1.15
    Marody – 1.00
    Iacobellis – 1.00
    Gambardella – 0.86
    Malone – 0.75
    Currie – 0.65
    Benson – 0.62
    McLeod – 0.62

Caleb Jones even more strikingly dominant here, with a higher rate than all but one forward (!) on the team with 1.08. Next up Bouchard (0.46) and Samorukov (0.45)

    The moms are NOT impressed.

Crazy Pedestrian: Well, we shutout NJ and then proceeded to spank ANA by 4 goals while every other pacific team lost.so by the law of #becauseoilers, oilers need to give it all back.

and we did. They are kind and generous boys,

  122. leadfarmer says:

Harpers Hair: I would respectfully suggest you keep your American arrogance to yourself.

I’m sorry you lost your hero and feel the need to lash out
But human psychology says you won’t care about Don Cherry in just a few months

And I respectfully say don’t label people you don’t know two shits about

  123. drglen says:

    hags9k:
    The moms are NOT impressed.

    lol

  124. jp says:

    Tipped?

A goal is a goal in any case.

  125. Munny says:

Pretty good backcheck by PRusty, leads to zone time and a Drai goal.

  126. Material Elvis says:

Hat tip to Munny on that one. Draisaitl’s 15th goal.

  127. jp says:

Is that a McDavid Off goal? lol

  128. OriginalPouzar says:

    Hey, Drai floats one in.

Decent little play from Gagner to delay and wait for Drai to get open (and, prior to that, Bear).

  129. drglen says:

deflected by burns.. YAY.. we get a cheesy one back.

    Cue the comeback..

  130. drglen says:

    if we get a powerplay…..

  131. Material Elvis says:

    hags9k:
    The moms are NOT impressed.

They can put away the wooden spoon…for now.

  132. Munny says:

wow if that tip from 97 goes in we have a whole different ball game.

  133. Younger Oil says:

    Draisaitl:

    Leads the league in points.

Has a 10 game point streak.

Has a point in every single game that the Oilers have not been shut out.

    What an absolute stud.

  134. Oil2Oilers says:

    Wilde,

Thanks for the work, it is appreciated

  135. Munny says:

Some skill on display from the Sharks there. They earn a PP.

  136. Material Elvis says:

Manning just got undressed by a Shark. Melker Karlsson?

  137. drglen says:

    and oil take a penalty..

  138. drglen says:

ok shorthanded goal coming right up!

Put Drai with Nuge on the Kill. Bear with Nurse.

  139. Munny says:

    Material Elvis:
Hat tip to Munny on that one. Draisaitl’s 15th goal.

Thought our only chance was a spell. I’m not proud of it, but sometimes you have to sink to that level.

  140. hags9k says:

MAN I hope Remenda says you people on air tonight.

  141. drglen says:

    Munny:
Some skill on display from the Sharks there. They earn a PP.

they do have alot of skill

  142. OriginalPouzar says:

What a SH play by Archibald – almost a beauty shorty for Sheahan.

Looks like Archie may be really hurt – his right foot……

  143. Material Elvis says:

What a chance for Sheahan shorthanded.

  144. jp says:

That was a beautiful SH play by Archibald. Puck protection and then got it out front for a grade A chance.

  145. Munny says:

Game could be 4-3 easily on a great shorthanded chance by Archie to Sheahan. But Archie hurt.

  146. drglen says:

wouldn’t been nice sheehan… close. great rush archi

  147. Younger Oil says:

For once I’d like to see a free agent signing who routinely gets 10 goals piss even a single drop in Edmonton’s bottom 6.

  148. Material Elvis says:

Munny: Thought our only chance was a spell.I’m not proud of it, but sometimes you have to sink to that level.

    Whatever. It. Takes.

  149. OriginalPouzar says:

First Oiler fight of the year.

Is the jersey tie-down rule still in effect? If so Manning will be in trouble in addition to Zack likely getting the initial even up PIM.

  150. drglen says:

great push back physically… no shots on macdavid… but.. Kass may have cost us a powerplay there.. they’ve got to give him instigator.

  151. OriginalPouzar says:

Ya, Kass negated the PP but that’s OK in this instance.

  152. drglen says:

    4 x 4 need one here boys..

  153. Material Elvis says:

Skilled defensive play by Bear on the 2 on 1

  154. Younger Oil says:

Bear showing Nurse how to play a 2 on 1.

  155. drglen says:

Thorton trash talking nurse there… that might come back to bite them.

  156. drglen says:

Bear saves day, nurse stepped on a banana peel or something there..

  157. drglen says:

tipp playing hunch with nyggard and gagner 4 x 4… interesting.

  158. drglen says:

    nice shot benning.. good play.

  159. OriginalPouzar says:

Well, that late goal certainly hurts.

  160. Material Elvis says:

Terrible defensive play from the Oilers on that goal.

  161. drglen says:

    nobody picked him up.

well garbage time… rest drai and macd

  162. Oil2Oilers says:

In a close game like this targeting Hertl would be irresponsible

  163. Munny says:

Sheahan line with a good shift, No scoresies though.

  164. drglen says:

one of those every bounce goes your way for san jose… goes that way sometimes.

Edmonton had the luck against anaheim

  165. SK Oiler Fan says:

Well that was poor . Everyone staring at the puck. Didnt hear anyone yell about Hertl. Old time Oilers hockey there.
Nurse puts pucks to wierd spots. It’s like he cant see past the first defender fronting him

  166. drglen says:

I’m at a loss….. quick somebody say something good about the oilers, something hopeful.. , a rally cry or something. I got nothin.

  167. Younger Oil says:

In my opinion, Nurse looks nowhere near a $6M dollar player, let alone $7.5M like some have suggested. I’d be very, very cautious with his next contract. Fantastic athlete, but consistently poor decisions offensively and defensively to my eye.

Bear looks like the goods, though. If he and Nurse together cost less than $9M combined for the next 2-3 years, I’d have a hard time complaining.

  168. Réal Goudenyéu says:

    drglen:
I’m at a loss….. quick somebody say something good about the oilers, something hopeful.. , a rally cry or something.I got nothin.

It’s one game that they clearly decided not to give a shit about. I don’t think it’s indicative of anything.

  169. Lowetide says:

    After Two:

5-1 San Jose (2-1 SJS in the second)
16-15 San Jose shots (8-6 SJS in the second)
31-28 San Jose Corsi five-on-five (16-10 SJS in the second)

    ==

I never trust the San Jose games. One thing is true: Losing by four or by one counts the same. The losses by four let you get a head start on a good night’s sleep.

  170. Material Elvis says:

    drglen:
I’m at a loss….. quick somebody say something good about the oilers, something hopeful.. , a rally cry or something.I got nothin.

They are in a playoff position. They have Draisaitl and McDavid. Prospect pool is decent. The rink is nice.

  171. Munny says:

    Quinn saying there’s a chance.

    I’m not buying it.

There’s zero chance. Imfuckingpossible. Never in a million years.

  172. jp says:

    hags9k:
MAN I hope Remenda says you people on air tonight.

    Well done.

I mean McDavid doesn’t even have a shot on net yet….

  174. Munny says:

I don’t know what the Oilers were doing with their Moms last night but I doubt it was dinner, a quick game of neon bowling, and then an early night.

  175. Réal Goudenyéu says:

    Munny:

Pirates of the Carribean like 15 times

  176. jp says:

    Fuck that penalty (shot).

  177. OriginalPouzar says:

Its hilarious that they called a penalty shot there – really?

  178. Réal Goudenyéu says:

LoL that is not a penalty shot. NHL officiating is a fucking joke.

  179. OriginalPouzar says:

RGoudeny: I mean McDavid doesn’t even have a shot on net yet….

He’s had another sub-par game (for McDavid) – very inconsistent this year – rehabbing as opposed to training.

  180. Réal Goudenyéu says:

So Don Cherry gets fired and decides to go on the Tucker Carlson show?

    Wow.

  181. jp says:

    Nice check Archibald on Couture.

  182. Munny says:

Game was opening up going back and forth and then Drai gets an unsportsmanlike. Oiler bench is very displeased with the past two calls.

  183. drglen says:

Material Elvis: They are in a playoff position. They have Draisaitl and McDavid.Prospect pool is decent. The rink is nice.

    lol… thanks!!

  184. drglen says:

    great save smith there.

  185. Munny says:

Not even getting the benefit of score effects…

  186. drglen says:

ugh… 4th line is terrible tonight. Whole team is underperforming, but Gagner has been a no-show to this point.

  187. Material Elvis says:

Well that was a nice goal.

  188. Gerta Rauss says:

    oh mama

  189. OriginalPouzar says:

Good looking garbage goal – Kass from Drai after a nice takeaway by McDavid.

  190. jp says:

Nurse has lots of flaws but he’s such an impressive skater.

Also, yay goal. Actually pretty nice.

  191. Munny says:

    Kass for the Mamas

  192. drglen says:

nurses passing, not quite there tonight..

    nice goal KASSIAN..

  193. Wilde says:

    Oil2Oilers:
    Wilde,

Thanks for the work, it is appreciated

    you’re welcome

  194. drglen says:

one more.. and jack michaels will shout “AND THE OILERS ARE RIGHT BACK IN THIS GAME! “

  195. Material Elvis says:

Of course the Sharks score. Fuck this game.

  196. Réal Goudenyéu says:

4 tip in goals tonight for the Sharks?

  197. Gerta Rauss says:

    Not Mike Smith’s finest hour

Oh well, it’s one of those nights

    Bring on the Avalanche

  198. drglen says:

another deflection goal against… its like the SEDINS play for san jose

klef and bear look really dumb on that goal.

  199. drglen says:

Play nyggard rest of the way… get him some reps ( or send to AHL for a stint) … he has been terrible in all aspect of the game. Just play third and 4th line. work chaisson in.

Head scratcher for coach.. disasterous moves for this game.

  200. drglen says:

great shot karrllson, in fairness, high velocity, through traffic 4 inches off the ice… changed his angle for that.. That’s high, high end talent right there folks. Karlssons coming around.
