Stanley Cup 2020 Playoffs: Oilers vs Chicago Game 1

It’s going to be a scorcher in Edmonton today, hot sun bearing down and not a cloud to hide behind. Dogs barking, kids laughing, sprinklers keeping time with staccato percussion and lawn mowers humming a familiar tune.

Around 1pm today, the Oilers will hit the ice to play a game that means more to this city than anything that’s happened since spring 2017. Don’t you dare mention August unless it’s in a sentence that includes “Oilers” “in” “August” and “company.” By 4pm, barbecues, beers and adult cheers should echo down the subdivisions. It’s hockey Saturday in Edmonton, and this city doesn’t give a rat’s ass what month it is. Are you all ready for this?

THE ATHLETIC!

Great perspective from a ridiculous group of writers and analysts. I am proud to be part of The Athletic. Here are the most recent Oilers stories.

KEYS TO THE GAME

For the Oilers, outscoring Chicago five on five is important, marking Patrick Kane imperative. Kane’s the one player on the ‘Hawks roster who will give Edmonton fits. He’s dangerous always with the puck, and if he’s covered then sure as hell the puck is headed to a dangerous place with a linemate in mind. Corey Crawford is also a concern.

Connor McDavid is going to be too much for Chicago’s defense, with Leon Draisaitl on deck. Game 1 is the most important in a five game series, just like strike one is the most important pitch in baseball. Dave Tippett is going to let his horses run free offensively, short leash for support players.

Defensively, the Oilers have a mobile top-4D who can move the puck, defend and outlet well by pass or carry. The Edmonton blue will make mistakes, but laser focus against Kane is vital. Chicago’s defense comes in with a bigger job while carrying less quality and depth.

THE NEAL-LUCIC TRADE

I said all along the Oilers would not get a good result but it’s far less harmful than it could have been. The NHL gives the pick to Calgary but gives Ken Holland a year to trade for a replacement. It’s extremely likely Edmonton uses the 2020 pick. Here’s a mock just for fun, I’ll put the Oilers at No. 20 overall. This mock assumes JP is signed.

No. 20 overall: RC Mavrik Bourque, Shawinigan (QMJHL). I keep coming back to this player because he’s skilled, smart, has great anticipation and a quick release. There are no negatives beyond size (5.10, 176) and his stock is rising due to complete skill set.

No. 82 overall: LW Roby Jarventie, Ilves (Liiga). A bigger winger (6.01, 180) who is an August 2002, he scored a goal in five Liiga games and 23 goals in 36 Mestis games. His skating is average but he’s one of the youngest players in the draft so there is room to grow. His photo reminded me of Lennart Petrell.

No. 144 overall: LW Maxim Groshev, Nizhnekamsk (KHL). He’s 6.01, 195 and an older prospect (December 2001) for this draft. Groshev is a two-way winger with a good shot and can skate. Oilers might take a higher risk player here but lack of picks inside the top 100 could see Holland go the safe route.

No. 175 overall: LC Dmitry Zlodeyev, Dynamo (MHL). His scouting report reads like a Ken Holland player and the Oilers appear to be back on the Russian radar. I do think the Oilers will take more chances and the Denezhkin pick looks strong one year gone.

No. 206 overall: LC Daniel Ljungman, Linkoping (SuperElite). His draft year reflects Philip Broberg’s in that he performed very well and put himself on the prospect map at the Hlinka-Gretzky tournament. Another two-way center who is more shooter than playmaker and could move to wing in pro hockey.

NOTE TO A FRIEND

I’ve been writing this blog for 15 years now, and in my mind’s eye have been talking to one person that whole time: You. That’s the idea of the blog, from the grumpy old guy to photos of the dog.

So, on this special day, a reminder you may remember: Enjoy this.

I used to watch television shows that had scenes where old people cry at graduations, or weddings, or birth announcements or funerals. I enjoyed the laughter but didn’t get the point, but as one ages, and there’s more past than future, things come into view.

I’ve never suggested or anticipated multiple Stanleys for this era of the Oilers, the league is far better now with more teams. It’s also true, without rambling on too much about it, that the support group for McDavid and Draisaitl is a little shy of the men who played alongside 99 and 11.

You only get so many bullets in life, a finite number of lovers and soulmates and children and even sorties for Stanley. You hold on to this, you enjoy every minute, because it’s your experience and your life and your time.

God bless you boys, glory awaits.

I very rarely comment but follow along most days.

Today is a special day. The NHL has done something pretty special keeping the cases at 0 and the players have sacrificed seeing loved ones, unlike baseball. All this so there can be a once in a lifetime tournament, a true battle of attrition, for the Stanley cup and to bring hockey back to fans.

This will be the hardest cup to win and we are very lucky to have the pleasure of cheering for a team with 2 breathtaking talents that are well suited for this.

Enjoy Oilers fans. Today is a good day and mught be the most unique day of Hockey in our lives.

I know you’ve kept the hockey home fires burning, LT; it’s just been hard to really engage over this historically bizarre and frightening summer.

I think the Oilers must draft Mavrik Bourque just for his name. He can be our wingman any day.

  18. Bryan says:

I’m not a whiny or negative type of person but have the Oilers ever won one of these contentious type of rulings? This one makes no sense to me all since the parameters of the agreement weren’t met. The compensatory picks for Chiarelli and Mclelland were outrageous as well but at least they have scuttled that ridiculous rule now. There have been rulings in the past like Gustafson and Graves that still rankle too. But today is the start of what will hopefully be a long and exciting run for the local crew. Winning the golden ticket definitely offsets the disappointment from any strange dealings with the league. Connor and Leon and company will need to start fast and keep their foot on the throttle for sixty minutes. There are many time champions in the other dressing room and those type of athletes can never be taken lightly.

Yep. There’s a reason the NHL eliminated 5 games series. As noted in 1 game a goaler with a bad HAIR day can virtually eliminate his team in 60 minutes.

Meanwhile a team with 1 less pt in the standings has the Pacific’s 2nd bye. At worst the teams with 1 pt more and .001 more should have played a game for that spot.

    Everyone enjoy coin flip Saturday.

    Morning all.

If you search ‘hit the dfif’ in Youtube the top result is song of that name by Marty Mone.

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D1JIgtX5pCk

The video is a just collage of farm vehicles that the artist has driven over the years and if you say something nice in the comments Marty will thank you, even though the song was released more than five years ago.

The amazing thing about Hit the Diff (other than the fact it’s so catchy that it stays in your head for days after you hear it) is that the video has more than 10.5 million views. The song is virtually unknown outside of Ireland, so almost all of those views are in Ireland, which has a population of 6.5 million people. By way of comparison, the most popular Tragically Hip video I found on Youtube is Ahead by a Centruy, which has 7.4 million views.

Hit the Diff is one of the most popular Irish songs, in Ireland itself, written in the last 50 years. And if a song like this can become monster hit, then anything is possible.

So hit the diff and pray, that she goes all the way

  38. prairieschooner says:

So we have to give a pick to Boston because they fired Chiarelli and we hired him even though the NHL scrubbed that rule and now we have to give up a pick because Covid , player slump, injury etc etc happened ?
Thats twice rules have been changed
Have player performance bonuses been prorated as well or is it just some things ?

    Life is good
    Go Oilers !

  39. Reja says:

I don’t give a shit how they do it, off a skate or a triple deflection but the 4th line is scoring a 5 on 5 goal today.

  40. Younger Oil says:

13 minor penalties called in the first two periods of the CAR-NYR game is really great news for the Oilers.

I’ve honestly been quite impressed with the refereeing over the exhibition games and this first playoff game. Seems like the lack of a crowd is allowing refs to call the game properly while keeping the game in control.

  41. McNuge93 says:

I was looking at the Canes Rangers game. I see they have nice tarps covering the seats in the lower bowl. It looks good, and takes your mind off the fact that there should be fans sitting there.

But I was wondering why the NHL wouldnt sell advertising on the tarps similar to the board advertising. Might be a way of recouping a little bit of revenue.

  42. Munny says:

    Younger Oil,

They’ve been calling penalties heavy at the beginning of the playoffs for about 15 yrs now. Sadly the Hawks are probably watching that game and taking note.

Knowing the NHL, that’s the Eastern treatment; the West will still be “let em play”.

  44. oilersfan says:

So Carolina scores and the horn goes off and crowd noise is simulated… nakes sense , the Canes are the home team for the first two games since they were higher up in the standings…

Then the rangers score and the horn goes off and the simulated crowd celebrates… how does that make sense? The rangers are the road team where when they score there is no horn and the crowd is quiet.

I want the nhl to simulate as best they can real nhl playoff situations. The crowd should not make moderate noise for a home game they should go ballistic. The home team goal should be followed by chants and noise for some time. Missed chances should be oohed and aahed. Then when the visitor scores it should be crickets. No horn. Quiet the home fans down… then the home fans should make some noise to cheer on their team when there is no goal for inspiration.

This isn’t rocket science, it’s basic fan reality. How can the nhl not have properly simulated this with months to prepare?

  45. Reja says:

Anybody know who’s starting between the pipes for both teams?

  46. OriginalPouzar says:

I only lived in Edmonton for about nine months; have only seen the Oilers play live twice; and 20 years later I am sitting alone in the middle of the night, as nervous as hell, waiting for the start. Strange thing supporting a sports team.

  82. Reja says:

I’m feeling good it’s time the Oilers go on a run its starting today buckle up Ladies and Gents it’s going to be a long ride.

  83. tileguy says:

    Outstanding pregame message.

  84. PerryK says:

    tileguy:
So if Smith trailing 2-0 after the first 10, one being a stinker, do you pull him, or keep him in net because he is a battler?

Wash your mouth with soap, man! No time to think like that. Go Oilers!

  85. marty62 says:

Im not too concerned about the goalie, I think Connor is gonna have a huge game 5 Goals

  86. Reja says:

    Lowetide:
I would go with Koskinen and Jones over Smith and Russell. Tippett remains consistent, he likes Smith against the ‘Hawks.

I would have lost a bundle on the 3 rd pick going to the Flames but l knew Smith being Tippett’s man would start the important first game.

  87. OilClog says:

While Koskinen feels like the much safer bet, here’s to Smith getting 2 apples today sending McDavid off the races in a 6-2 romp for the Mighty Oilers!

  88. Rondo says:

    tileguy,

    Play hockey

  89. Gerta Rauss says:

dessert1111: I wonder if the timing of the NHL ruling was strategic – any other day we’d all be up in arms about the clear screw job, but today hockey’s back and the Oilers are in it and we’re all in good moods with the anticipation

    It’s no coincidence

    This is the NHL

  90. London Jon says:

    LETS GO BOYS

  91. London Jon says:

    Well done Matt Dumba

  92. OriginalPouzar says:

Solid save for Smith – no rebound.

  93. Munny says:

Well he didnt Talbot the first shot…

  94. OilClog says:

Have no worries Holland will never forget Gary has broken his circle of trust and will screw the NHL at every chance to the Oilers favor going forwards. He’s taken it personally.

  95. OriginalPouzar says:

Oilers very sloppy in the first minute – very!

  96. OilClog says:

    Bogosian is now a RW

  97. Lowetide says:

Nice defensive play by Nuge there.

  98. striatic says:

What is going on with the Oilers defensive structure?

  99. Gerta Rauss says:

    Too many men CHI

Maybe the boys will get a breath here and complete a couple of passes

  100. London Jon says:

    PP, here we go

  101. Gerta Rauss says:

    ding ding ding

  102. Nailer Yakumoto says:

    WOOOOOOOOOOOOOHHHHHH!!!

  103. OriginalPouzar says:

Nice shot by McDavid to open the scoring.

  104. London Jon says:

    Yes!!!!!

  105. OilClog says:

This will be known as the McDavid invitational going forward.

  106. Ribs says:

    Lowetide:
I would go with Koskinen and Jones over Smith and Russell. Tippett remains consistent, he likes Smith against the ‘Hawks.

Yup he started both regular season games. Hawks are track meet all star Hawks so Smith’s transitional game may be of help…or not

  107. OriginalPouzar says:

AA with a beauty rush and off the cross-bar…..

  108. London Jon says:

    Shelf baby.

Love the little PP re entry by McDavid

  109. striatic says:

Almost got another. Need to not get cocky, 5v5 still looking shaky despite the PP goal.

  110. godot10 says:

The Oilers are the home team, but they didn’t choose their normal home side of the ice. They chose the visiting side.

  111. OilClog says:

    Bruh that’s a penalty

  112. Reja says:

Keep shooting shoot from everywhere Crawford is playing Deep in his net. We need to chase him out of this game.

  113. striatic says:

    Smith my god

  114. LMHF#1 says:

    Pull Smith.

  115. Munny says:

D running around. Ill advised by Smith.

  116. OriginalPouzar says:

Smith with some big/huge saves and then, well, he does what he does….

  117. leadfarmer says:

This is the Mike Smith I expected
    Le sigh

  118. London Jon says:

    Fucking Mike Smith

  119. Todd Macallan says:

That’s not on Smith. That’s on Tippett.

  120. Gerta Rauss says:

I didn’t think I’d live long enough to hear Chelsea Dagger in an Edmonton arena

    blech

  121. OilClog says:

Why does he do these things

  122. Younger Oil says:

    That’s why you start Koskinen.

    Fuck off with that, Smith.

  123. deardylan says:

Okay that was the one Smith gimmee – expected.

  124. London Jon says:

Why the hell would you take that risk Dave Tippett

  125. Younger Oil says:

Maybe Smith has the .938 in playoffs because the other team can’t get shots on him if he scores on yourself.

  126. Zelepukin says:

That wasn’t on Smith at all. The D called for the puck and went behind the net instead of infront of it.

  127. oilersfan says:

The nhl really should have let each team play 4 pre season games

This isn’t playoff hockey it’s pre season hockey

    The sloppiness is awful

  128. Reja says:

    OriginalPouzar:
Smith with some big/huge saves and then, well, he does what he does….

Holy smokes it was a lucky goal the team will make it up.

  129. Klima's_Bucket says:

    Is that Mike Smith?
    Or Steve Smith?

  130. OilClog says:

Smith literally soft meated it to the Chicago forward, that was a pass I’d expect from a 94 year old lady.

  131. leadfarmer says:

Smith used to be a good puck mover
    Used to!!

  132. tileguy says:

2 goals after 8 minutes, one a stinker, now what?

  133. Munny says:

    Zelepukin,

    The D played that horribly

Capn Serious ties it up… Glad the PK got early work but they gotta play Toews tighter.

  134. LMHF#1 says:

    Pull. Smith.

    NOW.

  135. OilClog says:

5 straight Oiler goals on tap

  136. London Jon says:

Oilers had the lead and the momentum.

This is why you don’t take the massive risk of starting Smith.

    Oiler’s gone flat, Hawks buzzing

  137. OriginalPouzar says:

Reja: Holy smokes it was a lucky goal the team will make it up.

Was anything I said not true?

It wasn’t a lucky goal – it was a bad play by the goalie – in my opinion.

  138. Zelepukin says:

All 4 defenders collapsing into the corner was not a good look on that goal.

  139. digger50 says:

Smith giving up a goal is just so predictable. You just roll your eyes cause you knew it was coming.

  140. Munny says:

    Good… adversity. They need this.

  141. Réal Goudenyéu says:

On to the next game I guess…

  142. OriginalPouzar says:

Hmmmmm, a third goal – deflection on this one – may see Mikko pretty soon.

  143. Mr.Snrub says:

    3-1 already.

    Get Smith out of there.

  144. leadfarmer says:

    Well back to summer

  145. Ribs says:

Rope getting tight right about now!

  146. The Trade Guy says:

What about a bunch of assholes.

  147. Side says:

Why is Smith still in net.

  148. striatic says:

Oh boy. Bad play plus bad bounces is not a good combination.

  149. The Trade Guy says:

    What a bunch of assholes.

  150. Unfriendly Regional Arachnid Individual says:

It’s almost as if EVERYONE knew starting Smith would be a bad idea…

  151. Reja says:

We need to wake up lots of time left

  152. Lucinius says:

I guess Tippett has decided to spot the Hawks a game in the series? Gutsy call in a 5-game series.

  153. Ryan says:

Smith was predictably a poor choice.

  154. Réal Goudenyéu says:

    Reja:
We need to wake up lots of time left

Crawford can absolutely stop the Oilers from scoring three goals.

  155. Klima's_Bucket says:

    Why not pull Smith?

At least wake the gang up.

  156. JOFA says:

    Call Charlie Huddy😊

  157. SlickOil says:

    Looking forward to Lafrenière!

  158. Reja says:

Need one back before period ends.

  159. oilersfan says:

Smith didn’t have a chance on the third one

    Total bad bounce

The second one hard to blame smith I have no idea bow Toews got so open

First goal smith should be embarrassed and needs to steal a few to offset it

Oilers playing awful in their own zone

Would love to see Nuge switched with ennis

  160. OriginalPouzar says:

Huge save by Crawford – damn.

  161. Younger Oil says:

Goals 2 and 3 were not on Smith.

That being said, he should be pulled, or a time out should be called. This team needs a kick in the ass.

What a disaster after getting the first goal, this is inexcusable. As others have pointed out, this is more or less a must win game.

The refs not calling the high stick on Archibald or the slash on McDavid while the Oilers had the lead didn’t help either, but that’s another story.

  162. Nailer Yakumoto says:

    Well…..

  163. Side says:

Good thing the refs blew the whistle before Smith could play it.

  164. OilClog says:

Goals 2 and 3 wouldn’t of happened if goal 1 didn’t swing all the momentum.

    Or goal fucking 4

  165. London Jon says:

Get him the f out of there

  166. oilersfan says:

McDavid scores a goal and is minutes 3 anyway

He has most every faceofff that has led directly to 2 of the goals

  167. Side says:

By the time I make a joke about Smith’s poor play, he already gets scored on.

  168. OriginalPouzar says:

The Oilers defence has been as bad as the goaltending and the goaltending decision.

  169. Younger Oil says:

Keep sitting on those hands Tippett, it’s doing wonders.

  170. LMHF#1 says:

    Wow.

And Tippett playing it like a regular season game keeping his goalie in until the end of the period. WTF…

  171. London Jon says:

Also why have we broken up such a successful line in Nuge – Drai -Yama

    Makes no sense

  172. OilersFuture says:

Smith doesn’t look comfortable at all playing deep in his crease not anticipating the play.

  173. Unfriendly Regional Arachnid Individual says:

Oilers playing with the mindset too many Oilers fans had going into this- like it was gonna be easy. Tippett made a poor choice with goalies, he let in a soft one and things fell apart.

  174. Hockey Project says:

I want to blame Smith, but on two of the goals the scorer was completely alone in front, and the other was a brutal deflection. Aside from the stupid decision by Smith, the team has been really bad in their own end.

  175. flyfish1168 says:

Healthy veteran hawk team is dangerous. It is showing

  176. The Trade Guy says:

Embarrassing glad they threw the shitty goalie out there for this one.

  177. jake70 says:

Oilers D zone play is the key to any success they have.

That is at least 2 5×5 goals against the 97 line. Can’t move the puck out of D zone if you don’t have it.

  178. Zelepukin says:

I’m guessing Mikko starts the 2nd.

Klef and Lars on the ice for 3 of em.

  179. OriginalPouzar says:

OK, next goal is important, very important.

  180. Lucinius says:

    The rout is on.

Good game for the Oilers to have. Maybe it’ll make them realise effort is required and Tippett to understand how to coach again.

  181. fuzzy muppet says:

Why is Smith still in the game?

  182. hags9k says:

Oilers favourites against the Hawks always felt like a scam.

  183. Oiler_Kiwi97 says:

Any chance Coach Tippett knows how to call a fricking timeout

  184. PokeCheck says:

Are we allowed to swap in Jones, Bouchard, Broberg and Lagesson between periods? If we’re going to play like an all-rookie defence, we might as well commit fully.

  185. godot10 says:

    Hey Dave.

You are the home team. You don’t have to play McDavid against Toews.

  186. OilClog says:

Nice to see the refs are still jealous of McDavid

  187. Todd Macallan says:

Quite literally nowhere to go but up from here. Can only hope the embarrassment acts as a huge wake up for Monday.

  188. Younger Oil says:

This isn’t a “not enough preseason games” problem. Carolina and New York came ready to play.

  189. LadiesloveSmid says:

Maybe I am just the right amount of jaded being a young oilers fan. How can you ever expect anything more?

  190. Mr.Snrub says:

I would get mad at Tippett not pulling Smith but at 4-1 this game is already over. But hey look on the bright side teams that win Game 1 of a best of 5 series only have an 87.5% chance of winning the series! A small price to pay to make an aging veteran happy.

  191. 66 hertz rental says:

I’m glad others are seeing what I’m seeing. Unspectacular goaltending yep, however the reason we’re down is absolutely embarrassing defensive play.

  192. oilersfan says:

Other than the top many men the hawks have had all the bounces and breaks

The smith gift totally changed the momentum

The oilers’ switches and help defence looks like it’s in pre season from, because, well, it is

  193. OilersFuture says:

    Hockey Project:
I want to blame Smith, but on two of the goals the scorer was completely alone in front, and the other was a brutal deflection. Aside from the stupid decision by Smith, the team has been really bad in their own end.

He’s not anticipating the play though. The 4th goal is one that really his lateral movement was non existent and he flopped across like it was 1974

  194. jake70 says:

    NBC execs must be happy.

  195. Reja says:

    Looks like overtime to me.

  196. Unfriendly Regional Arachnid Individual says:

    LadiesloveSmid:
Maybe I am just the right amount of jaded being a young oilers fan. How can you ever expect anything more?

Agreed. They’ll earn my faith when they inspire it.

  197. OriginalPouzar says:

    Todd Macallan:
Quite literally nowhere to go but up from here. Can only hope the embarrassment acts as a huge wake up for Monday.

How about for the 2nd and 3rd periods? And OT?

This game is not over, yet.

  198. flyfish1168 says:

Smith being the veteran is not showing. That 1st goal by Hawks deflated the teams momentum
