Stanley Cup 2020 Playoffs: Oilers vs Chicago Game 1

It’s going to be a scorcher in Edmonton today, hot sun bearing down and not a cloud to hide behind. Dogs barking, kids laughing, sprinklers keeping time with staccato percussion and lawn mowers humming a familiar tune.

Around 1pm today, the Oilers will hit the ice to play a game that means more to this city than anything that’s happened since spring 2017. Don’t you dare mention August unless it’s in a sentence that includes “Oilers” “in” “August” and “company.” By 4pm, barbecues, beers and adult cheers should echo down the subdivisions. It’s hockey Saturday in Edmonton, and this city doesn’t give a rat’s ass what month it is. Are you all ready for this?

THE ATHLETIC!

Great perspective from a ridiculous group of writers and analysts. I am proud to be part of The Athletic. Here are the most recent Oilers stories.

KEYS TO THE GAME

For the Oilers, outscoring Chicago five on five is important, marking Patrick Kane imperative. Kane’s the one player on the ‘Hawks roster who will give Edmonton fits. He’s dangerous always with the puck, and if he’s covered then sure as hell the puck is headed to a dangerous place with a linemate in mind. Corey Crawford is also a concern.

Connor McDavid is going to be too much for Chicago’s defense, with Leon Draisaitl on deck. Game 1 is the most important in a five game series, just like strike one is the most important pitch in baseball. Dave Tippett is going to let his horses run free offensively, short leash for support players.

Defensively, the Oilers have a mobile top-4D who can move the puck, defend and outlet well by pass or carry. The Edmonton blue will make mistakes, but laser focus against Kane is vital. Chicago’s defense comes in with a bigger job while carrying less quality and depth.

THE NEAL-LUCIC TRADE

I said all along the Oilers would not get a good result but it’s far less harmful than it could have been. The NHL gives the pick to Calgary but gives Ken Holland a year to trade for a replacement. It’s extremely likely Edmonton uses the 2020 pick. Here’s a mock just for fun, I’ll put the Oilers at No. 20 overall. This mock assumes JP is signed.

No. 20 overall: RC Mavrik Bourque, Shawinigan (QMJHL). I keep coming back to this player because he’s skilled, smart, has great anticipation and a quick release. There are no negatives beyond size (5.10, 176) and his stock is rising due to complete skill set.

No. 82 overall: LW Roby Jarventie, Ilves (Liiga). A bigger winger (6.01, 180) who is an August 2002, he scored a goal in five Liiga games and 23 goals in 36 Mestis games. His skating is average but he’s one of the youngest players in the draft so there is room to grow. His photo reminded me of Lennart Petrell.

No. 144 overall: LW Maxim Groshev, Nizhnekamsk (KHL). He’s 6.01, 195 and an older prospect (December 2001) for this draft. Groshev is a two-way winger with a good shot and can skate. Oilers might take a higher risk player here but lack of picks inside the top 100 could see Holland go the safe route.

No. 175 overall: LC Dmitry Zlodeyev, Dynamo (MHL). His scouting report reads like a Ken Holland player and the Oilers appear to be back on the Russian radar. I do think the Oilers will take more chances and the Denezhkin pick looks strong one year gone.

No. 206 overall: LC Daniel Ljungman, Linkoping (SuperElite). His draft year reflects Philip Broberg’s in that he performed very well and put himself on the prospect map at the Hlinka-Gretzky tournament. Another two-way center who is more shooter than playmaker and could move to wing in pro hockey.

NOTE TO A FRIEND

I’ve been writing this blog for 15 years now, and in my mind’s eye have been talking to one person that whole time: You. That’s the idea of the blog, from the grumpy old guy to photos of the dog.

So, on this special day, a reminder you may remember: Enjoy this.

I used to watch television shows that had scenes where old people cry at graduations, or weddings, or birth announcements or funerals. I enjoyed the laughter but didn’t get the point, but as one ages, and there’s more past than future, things come into view.

I’ve never suggested or anticipated multiple Stanleys for this era of the Oilers, the league is far better now with more teams. It’s also true, without rambling on too much about it, that the support group for McDavid and Draisaitl is a little shy of the men who played alongside 99 and 11.

You only get so many bullets in life, a finite number of lovers and soulmates and children and even sorties for Stanley. You hold on to this, you enjoy every minute, because it’s your experience and your life and your time.

God bless you boys, glory awaits.

Old goalies don’t just fall off the cliff they swan dive.

  2. Reja says:

Tippett is going to tear a strip in between periods Kelfbom and Nursev have been garbage. Wake the fuk up.

  3. Nix says:

Isnt this exactly, all pretenses aside, why the media was so hard on Tippett for his goalie decision this week? Everyone anticipated he’d likely go with his guy despite the evidence and that it would be a bad call. This ‘smartest man in the room’ decision has blown up in his face.

  4. Younger Oil says:

I know we’re all shitting on Smith (and rightfully so), but McDavid’s line has been the worst for us by far.

  5. OilClog says:

McDavid really needs to dig in on puck battles even when mentally deflated from dumb goalie decisions.

  6. Todd Macallan says:

OriginalPouzar: How about for the 2nd and 3rd periods? And OT?

This game is not over, yet.

It would seem that my ability to contain at times irrational pessimism gained from my life as an Oilers fan is also in pre season form. I am desperately hoping I’m wrong.

  7. Ryan says:

    Mr.Snrub:
I would get mad at Tippett not pulling Smith but at 4-1 this game is already over. But hey look on the bright side teams that win Game 1 of a best of 5 series only have an 87.5% chance of winning the series! A small price to pay to make an aging veteran happy.

    It’s almost unbelievable.

It doesn’t matter who the coach or GM is for the Oilers.

    The addled thinking perseveres regardless.

  8. hags9k says:

Anybody got any marshmallows? Hate to let a tire fire go to waste.

  9. LMHF#1 says:

Not a chance that happens in a first playoff period with home fans.

This will have a ton of different impacts of course – but we just saw one.

  10. RT26 says:

Sadly, that was a complete embarrassment. No fight for loose pucks. If there is not a complete 180 in the second, then let us hope for some pride in game 2

  11. OilFire says:

    hags9k,

    You rang?

  12. Reja says:

Mercifully the period ends. Worst period I’ve ever seen as a Oiler fan they should be ashamed. Leon scores the 5-4 winner in OT.

  13. jt17 says:

If Edmonton is the home team, why are we hearing Chelsea Dagger after every Chi goal?

  14. jake70 says:

I fear the further game goes, Crawford will just get harder to score on. If they could get a couple of quick ones, the flood gates may open and they will score a bunch.

  15. Unfriendly Regional Arachnid Individual says:

    Reja:
Leon scores the 5-4 winner in OT.

    Lol not a chance

  16. Younger Oil says:

On the bright side, Smith starting and letting in 4 goals is probably our best chance of seeing as much Koskinen as possible in this series.

If Koskinen starts, he likely lets in three of those goals and never sees the net again.

  17. OilClog says:

    jt17:
If Edmonton is the home team, why are we hearing Chelsea Dagger after every Chi goal?

Same reason Calgary was awarded the draft pick.

  18. striatic says:

I don’t think there will be any of my molars left by the end of the game, what with all the grinding. That period was excruciating.

  19. Réal Goudenyéu says:

It’s actually quite amazing how bad this team looks this afternoon.

  20. hags9k says:

Cmon Oilers, show some mettle and claw back into this one.

  21. Lowetide says:

    After One:

    4-1 Chicago
    16-8 Chicago shots
17-13 Chicago Corsi for five on five
    ==

Oilers organization has had a bad day. The coach went with his heart and that failed him, Oilers responded to diversity by turning the puck over in their own end what seemed like a dozen times. That was an awful period of hockey. This team played one good, one awful and one decent against Calgary, I’d suggest their pride should be kicking in right about now.

    Lordy.

  22. godot10 says:

Kassian with a pitiful effort in getting to the point after the faceoff on the 3rd goal. Totally lazy effort.

On the 4th goal. Kassian lost a board battle against Toews, and then let Toews go to the next unmarked, choosing to cover air instead.

Kassian made the first Oiler mistake on both goals, and two mistakes on the 4th goal.

  23. Reja says:

Unfriendly Regional Arachnid Individual: Lol not a chance

If I’m Tippett I’m starting the 4th line and telling them to crash and bang. First time I’ve ever seen a Oiler playoff game where there’s no hitting and the Hawks are having a picnic in the Fuking slot. If I’m a a cop I’m giving Nurse and especially Kelfbom a breathalyzer because they’re playing like a couple of beer league drunks.

  24. Material Elvis says:

    Younger Oil:
On the bright side, Smith starting and letting in 4 goals is probably our best chance of seeing as much Koskinen as possible in this series.

If Koskinen starts, he likely lets in three of those goals and never sees the net again.

Getting embarrassed might be the best thing that can happen today. Sharpens the focus. The goaltending, defense, and player positioning has all been bad. Klefbom and Larsson need to be much better. Tippett can do a lot better with his deployment to get McDavid away from JT. Put the Dynamite line back together, pull Smith, and get McDavid away from Toews.

  25. Sunnyboy says:

    Wow! Koski,CJ, whomever,
    would make no difference.
Maybe the other team down the road will show up tonite.
Death Valley in AB for road teams, not this afternoon.
Going out for along bike ride.

  26. Oiler_Kiwi97 says:

Kassian has expended more effort on his, sideburns than playing hockey recently

  27. Wonder Llama says:

I fleeced my legs for this?

If I’m Tippett, I reunite the league’s 2nd or 3rd best line post-New Years and find a way to trigger Connor’s pride. Maybe demote Kassian since he’s been nothing but negative.

  29. Younger Oil says:

McDavid line 2-8 Corsi, 3 GA, 22% on faceoffs. Can’t get much worse than that.

  30. Chelios is a Dinosaur says:

Y’all are shitty at visualizing positive outcomes in the face of adversity.

  31. Unfriendly Regional Arachnid Individual says:

    Younger Oil,

That’s what I show McDavid in the intermission.

  32. Mr.Snrub says:

HAHAHAHAHAHAHA Mike Smith back to start the second period.

  33. Munny says:

Bob and Jack were calling for the DRY line to be reunited during intermission az L1 is -3. Kbomb and Larsson had a really bad period too.

  34. Oiler_Kiwi97 says:

As we say in Scotland, the Oilers sucked big boaby in that period. Can only get better from here

  35. Unfriendly Regional Arachnid Individual says:

It’s almost like some people were saying the Saad-Toews-Kubalik line would be dangerous…

  36. flyfish1168 says:

HAwk gets out of their own zone so easily

  37. drglen says:

oh dear we look bad here. Larsson and Klefbom not cutting it.

  38. Glovjuice says:

Tippets decisions for this game are fireable offences. Smith; breaking up a dominant line; no timeout, no pull of Smith. What in the absolute fuck. Out to the pool with my little one. McDavid NEEDS to play some D for this team to win. Carve me all you want but it’s true.

  39. drglen says:

at least smith had that tough save to start the period, but our D is not ready to play… not confident. Tip… coach… change it up.

  40. godot10 says:

Tippett went with the goaltenders in the wrong order. Smith had shown no signs that he was ready in the pre-season.

  41. OilClog says:

How many careers would of been saved if their coach treated them the way Dave loves him some Mike Smith.

Yakupov would be a 5 time 40 goal winger.

  42. drglen says:

    godot10,

I think he played smith hoping he’d be hot, with the big fin in reserve.. solid plan.. but … we can’t lose games.

  43. OilClog says:

Dave has lost some serious clout today.

  44. godot10 says:

    Unfriendly Regional Arachnid Individual:
It’s almost like some people were saying the Saad-Toews-Kubalik line would be dangerous…

Kassian is still on summer vacation.

  45. Reja says:

    Atta boy nice dive.

  46. drglen says:

drai is waking up a bit. I think the possession game is better than the break out game against the hawks.

  47. drglen says:

    goal…!!!!

  48. OilClog says:

Pull Smith! Let us have a chance!

  49. jake70 says:

There’s one early on here. Chip away.

  50. drglen says:

    more Bear.

  51. Nix says:

I’m all for trading Lafreniere, Lavoie, and Krussels last year for pics 3 and 5 aka Stutzle and Holtz. Too soon?

  52. Munny says:

    Desperately needed that

  53. Harpers Hair says:

    Here comes firewagon hockey.

  54. drglen says:

    poor , mindless breakouts.. cmon guys.;

  55. godot10 says:

    drglen:
    more Bear.

    More Beer.

  56. Chelios is a Dinosaur says:

Y’all waited 5 months to give up after 20 minutes.

  57. drglen says:

oh no penalty. Need to stop. Tipp needs to shorten bench pronto.

  58. Unfriendly Regional Arachnid Individual says:

    Chelios is a Dinosaur:
Y’all waited 5 months to give up after 20 minutes.

Yes, because fair criticism is giving up.

  59. oilersfan says:

Whenever I see AA with the puck he seems to lose possession. Reminds me
A bit of Nail that way

  60. Munny says:

    Fuck off.

  61. Nailer Yakumoto says:

    Oy vey.

  62. drglen says:

    lost draw.. they score.

  63. Unfriendly Regional Arachnid Individual says:

    LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOL

  64. OilClog says:

Smith reacts after the puck is by him lol

  65. LMHF#1 says:

    Only 3 goals too late.

    Idiots…

  66. drglen says:

    Smith needed to have that.

  67. Harpers Hair says:

    Kubalik…4 points.

    Stone cold killer.

  68. Derek says:

RIP Mike Smith. Enjoy retirement, you had a hell of a career.

  69. Munny says:

    Fuck off.

    drglen:
    lost draw.. they score.

Really really need someone who can win a faceoff.

    Cmon Mikko let’s go.

  70. Nix says:

Why did Tippett wait til the exact worse time possible to play stubborn and boneheaded? The media was practically begging him not to screw up this tentatively good thing weve got going here… Omg.

  71. Oiler_Kiwi97 says:

Guess Smith isn’t worried about his playoff save % anymore

  72. McSorley33 says:

    I know. I know

    Face-offs are not important

  73. drglen says:

dear god… shoot it over the glass

  74. Todd Macallan says:

    Cheap headshot by Cagguila.

  75. Unfriendly Regional Arachnid Individual says:

The most important thing for a goalie is to be low-variance. Mike Smith is the antithesis of that. Choosing him was an awful decision. You rely on your high-variance guy AFTER your low(er)-variance guy falls short, not the other way around.

  76. Ryan says:

I generally like Tippett, but this was brutal.

I was annoyed when I found out Tippet was starting Smith.

The first goal against was a back breaker.

I hate old timey shit like waiting for five goals against to pull a goalie who’s playing like shit.

  77. Rickety Cricket says:

    Just tuned in. Yikes!

    Tip fucked up.

  78. flyfish1168 says:

    High hit missed by refs

  79. Réal Goudenyéu says:

Oilers “on pace” to give up 60 shots

  80. jake70 says:

    Munny:
    Fuck off.

Really really need someone who can win a faceoff.

    Cmon Mikko let’s go.
    Boyd Gordon, Eric Belanger?

  81. godot10 says:

    Unfriendly Regional Arachnid Individual:
The most important thing for a goalie is to be low-variance. Mike Smith is the antithesis of that. Choosing him was an awful decision. You rely on your high-variance guy AFTER your low(er)-variance guy falls short, not the other way around.

    Exactly.

  82. Younger Oil says:

Gotta love a .783 SV% and 11.11 GAA in a must win game.

Not saying he should have stopped all of them, but stopping one or two of the ones he let in would have made a massive difference.

  83. Crazy Pedestrian says:

    Munny:
    Fuck off.

Really really need someone who can win a faceoff.

    Cmon Mikko let’s go.

Unfortunately, Mikko Can’t score goals. He can stop all the shots, but oilers need 3 more goals Just to tie the game, without Giving up any more goals. And the way the Defense has been playing, I doubt that will happen.

  84. London Jon says:

    Caggiula targets the head late

  85. Lucinius says:

Mike Smith at a 0.783% when finally pulled. Woo? Were all the goals on him? Not even close. However, his job is to find ways to stop pucks. He did not do that. He needed to step up, especially after the coach decided to care more about past relationships/gut feelings than logic and start him. Instead he shat the bed.

Not the only Oiler to do so, granted. Not even remotely the only one. At the end of the day, however, the goalie the single most important position in hockey — especially in the playoffs. Smith and Tippett should be roasted for this.

The game has been a complete embarrassment. It is a pity the media won’t really call him out on it, but Tippett clearly the biggest failure of the day.

If the Oilers don’t wake up next game.. whelp. They’ll get what they deserve.

  86. Ryan says:

Regardless of the results this playoffs, I pray fucking Holland doesn’t sign Smith.

  87. Chelios is a Dinosaur says:

    Unfriendly Regional Arachnid Individual,

Not talking about critique, talking about literally not watching. It’s either an unhealthy emotional investment or no memory of the ebbs and flows of a hockey game, let alone a series.

  88. fries n gravy says:

This young dad spent real domestic capital to watch today’s game live as a bachelor. So far this looks like a Chiarellian overpay.

  89. drglen says:

its ok we only need three

  90. LMHF#1 says:

What’s up with McDavid’s short passing today?

He’s had about 5 picked off. Looks like his feel is out to lunch.

  91. Munny says:

    A better PK at least

  92. Réal Goudenyéu says:

    McDavid looks terrible.

  93. Unfriendly Regional Arachnid Individual says:

If you rewatch the games against the Hawks earlier in the season, you can clearly see that many of the goals are of the soft variety. Predictable outcome.

  94. fries n gravy says:

    fries n gravy,

Hey Fries, you should open another browser window and look up Tonka trucks on Kijiji.

    Good idea Fries!

  95. London Jon says:

    Unfriendly Regional Arachnid Individual:
The most important thing for a goalie is to be low-variance. Mike Smith is the antithesis of that. Choosing him was an awful decision. You rely on your high-variance guy AFTER your low(er)-variance guy falls short, not the other way around.

    100% True

  96. drglen says:

if we get one back… its still a game. but… Hawks are flying and tipp not able to answer… you must use your best puck moving D and your best possession forwards.

  97. Ryan says:

    Younger Oil:
Gotta love a .783 SV% and 11.11 GAA in a must win game.

Not saying he should have stopped all of them, but stopping one or two of the ones he let in would have made a massive difference.

    Someone referenced 1974.

That’s before my time, but a goalie with no lateral movement who plays deep in is net is a sitting duck.

  98. Lucinius says:

    Réal Goudenyéu:
    Oilers look terrible.

    Fixed that for you.

I know I’m being a bit bitchy about it. But.. all that wait.. and we get this? This!? I know the Oilers are generally a poster child team for being a joke, but still.

  99. fries n gravy says:

Captain Serious looks like gold today. What a player. I just wish he’d contract influenza for a few days.

It’ll be interesting to run the stats on these playoffs once they’re done. To what extent did the long break benefit older players who are normally tired by spring?

  100. OilClog says:

Only thing so far determined in this game is Mike Smith is what we all thought he was.

Still believe the Oilers will prevail as the better team over the next 4 games.

  101. Reja says:

How to beat the Hawks. This is big boy hockey hitting is allowed for fuck sakes

  102. drglen says:

possession lines are at least looking better… stopping the track meet. Hopefully we get a call on these cycles… not sure they can score.. but looks like tipp is using the foot soldiers.

  103. drglen says:

oooh.. post khaira looked good ther.e

  104. LadiesloveSmid says:

I’ve seen some bad Oiler games, this is top 3-5 I think.

  105. Nix says:

I’m not saying it was bad juju to sit Haas this game but my guy was ready just sayin.

  106. jake70 says:

Oilers fair value for penalties, as long as they call them both ways.

  107. Rickety Cricket says:

This is a real poo poo platter. Koski better be starting game 2.

  108. drglen says:

obviously, we need a stop. Shorty would be handy… put archibold out with macdavid

  109. Reja says:

    St. Francis Xavier rules.

  110. OilClog says:

They’re going to suspend Drake for the remaining of the series right?

  111. Chelios is a Dinosaur says:

So Caggiula goes unpenalized but Ennis is out for protocol. Keep making sense NHL.

  112. LMHF#1 says:

So 2 head hits on Ennis – no penalties for CHI and now he’s in concussion protocol?

I see the NHL didn’t ditch its bush league ways during the break…

  113. London Jon says:

Smith can nail his favourite cushion to that part of the bench, he’s going to spend the rest of the playoffs there

  114. drglen says:

Keith is so good at those ‘keeps’… dammit!

  115. Oil2Oilers says:

The $700,000 already in the 50/50 pot will ease one fans pain.

  116. drglen says:

    Ok we’re basically dead now.

  117. fries n gravy says:

    Reja,

I agree. I think the empty rink changes the dynamic. Somehow “hit the daylights out of them” doesn’t feel like it’s in the equation in an empty rink.

Hawks score. I guess we’re about to find out!

  118. Ryan says:

    London Jon:
Smith can nail his favourite cushion to that part of the bench, he’s going to spend the rest of the playoffs there

The only saving grace… as bad as Mike Smith played, the Oilers have been badly outplayed regardless.

  119. fries n gravy says:

I don’t know the Hawks. If the Oil tough guys are going to “send a message” or “wake up the bench”, which Hawks players will/should be targeted?

  120. Lucinius says:

I’m done. The team just isn’t worth it today.

  121. smellyglove says:

And two WEEAAAKK clearing plays lead to the PP marker against. No fight in this team, anemic is what I’d call them. Oilers definitely didn’t come ready to play.

  122. Chelios is a Dinosaur says:

My narrative for today: Exactly what Edmonton needed, we have them right where we want them, etc.

  123. drglen says:

    fries n gravy,

I was , sadly, thinking the same thing. Taves has his mojo and needs a slow down, and Kubelik needs and head massage. The are free flowing with impunity here. Also, maybe test duncan keiths knee.

  124. OilClog says:

Every bounce has been Chicago, shit happens.

  125. McSorley33 says:

This will be tough for some fans because the typical crutches have been removed.

    Team is tired….oh wait

    , injuries…oh.

Countdown to a “rusty” team post…..3…..2…..1….

  126. Réal Goudenyéu says:

Absolute embarrassment of an effort today.

  127. Todd Macallan says:

While the Hawks have definitely been the superior team, it is amazing how many bounces have gone their way, while the Oilers have 2 posts and that puck on the line at the end there.

  128. hags9k says:

Replay guys have been sitting for 5 months too…the preseason postseason.

  129. deardylan says:

HH called it a few days ago and said Kubalik was a stone cold killer. DK has slayed Game 1. Not bad for a 7th round pick by LA and picked up by Chicago for a 5 round pick!

Lets hope this blowout game is the second coming of when Spain lost its first game to Switzerland and ended up winning the World Cup.

    NEXT!!!

  130. London Jon says:

In the spirit of fairness do Chicago have to start Subban in Game 2?

  131. Derek says:

Kassian is the kind of guy you love to have in the playoffs.

    Allegedly.

  132. Gerta Rauss says:

    fries n gravy:
This young dad spent real domestic capital to watch today’s game live as a bachelor. So far this looks like a Chiarellian overpay.

    LoL

  133. London Jon says:

    Réal Goudenyéu:
Absolute embarrassment of an effort today.

Couldn’t look more like a team that thought this was going to be easy if they tried

  134. jake70 says:

  135. OilClog says:

It’s a great day for an historic 3rd period!

  136. RT26 says:

It’s just one game and doesn’t mean the series is over. But we are being badly out worked and outchanced, our PK is faltering and though a season worth of data told us to start Koskinen, we went with loyalty.

Chicago, today, is the far better team. They have shut down our transition game and have made a McDavid look pretty bad 5v5. Tip your hat to the hawks, we are in real danger as the Oil are anything but mentally tough

  137. Lowetide says:

    After Two: 6-2 Chicago
Shots 32-20 Chicago (16-12 Chicago in the second)
Corsi five on five 32-26 Chicago (15-13 Chicago in the second)

    ==

Oilers look absolutely owned. I did not expect this.

  138. Reja says:

    OilClog:
Every bounce has been Chicago, shit happens.

It’s a 5 game series next game is a must. I’m going to fly to Edmonton right now and bitch slap Kass and company if they don’t show any fight in the third we’re fuking toast. Toews and Kane pounce on weak ass bitches.

  139. drglen says:

well, it is 5 games… that is the only concellation. They get their win for being ready… and oilers get the wake up call.

Do you pull Larrson and Benning? the breakout passes are terrible… hope bounce passes to nobody.

    Kassian really fighting the puck..

tipp should try some new line combinations here. He’s been completely out coached here, absolutely cleaned clock.

    Oil2Oilers:
The $700,000 already in the 50/50 pot will ease one fans pain.

And remember – goes until tonight.

Might have a shot at the $1.4M world record.

  141. drglen says:

I can’t take elliot friendman seriously with his new Zeke look.

  142. drglen says:

    LMHF#1,

holy smokes… that’s insane… 10 bucks says the 5050 thing is going to be repealed after today. That’s too high. That’s not going to stand. So ya, some lucky fan today.

  143. dessert1111 says:

The other switch Tippett needs to make is to switch Ennis and RNH back, if Ennis can indeed come back.

I’ve noticed the 4th line out there more than I’d like but I don’t know how much of a difference that makes in a game like this. Even if Koskinen started and played well it should probably still be 4-2 Chicago.

Chicago is supposed to be the poor defensive team but Oilers have been just atrocious in their zone, it’s making me nostalgic lol

Chicago’s. Forward depth is proving itself.

Kane has been pedestrian so look out if he gets rolling.

  146. Crazy Pedestrian says:

Notes for Tippett for the remaining playoff games (what I would do):

    – Play Koskinen every game
    – switch out K.Russell for Jones
    – put Haas back in at 3C and play AA with him (From what I’ve seen, AA seems to play better with a Right shot Center)
    – put Nuge back with Drai and Yam and KEEP THEM TOGETHER!
    – stop trying to line match McDavid to the opponents best line.

It won’t be. Just more dough for charity which is great stuff.

  148. drglen says:

    Harpers Hair,

why is it that Saad is so effective in the the playoffs.?

Do oilers have a ‘secret weapon’… a rookie who isn’t taken seriously but who can torch?

Oilers were tentative, flatfooted, nervous or whatever, right from the drop of the puck.
Really can’t fault Smith, after the 1st goal, but I am so tired of this good puck handler narrative. We’ve had guys tie themselves into pretzels on this blog trying to quantify why Smith wins more than he should given his save percentage. Maybe it’s just dumb luck.
I don’t think he’s a better puck handler than your average NHL goalie. He just takes a lot more risks. When they work out he looks brilliant, when they don’t you get goal number 1.
KOSKINEN IS THE BETTER GOALIE. Play him till he shits the bed.
Sorry to all you Russell haters, but Kris Russell has been the Oilers best dman today.
This is going to get me in trouble, but don’t we all know racism is bad? Do we have to wait 15 minutes before we can start the game so everyone can get their politically correct sound bite in.

Did you not listen to people’s actual stories about their experiences with racism? These are young men. So no clearly we don’t all know racism is bad.

    Good post Comrade.

Kassian lined up against Kubalik in this game. His job was simple. To make a rookie feel uncomfortable in his first playoff game.

One of the most clueless and unreliable players that I have even seen in my life.

    who,

Quite clearly not everyone knows what racism even *is*.

He’s still asleep what a disappointment. He better come out next game guns a blazing.

  160. smellyglove says:

    Reja,

Yeah not to mention, does everyone not remember earlier in the year, before the wave of awareness around systematic racism, that the NHL was imploding with scandals around racism and other issues. Bill Peters. Don Cherry.

Oilers. Perfect storm. Anemic, weak play. Bad luck. Bad officiating. Two+ posts. Bad bounces.

  161. drglen says:

nope, larsson should not play next game. Tipp, roll the dice, bring in bouchard or it’s 0-2

  162. Clarkenstein says:

Oil have never played worth a shit in August anyway! In fact, they’ve never won a game!!

  163. drglen says:

I actually had a feeling oilers would lose this game.

  164. quade says:

    Who is reffing this game??

  165. drglen says:

Koskinen is looking ‘wall-like” … so at least we’ve sorted out our goalie situation.

  166. drglen says:

play AA the rest of the way… he’s the one wild card we have.

  167. 66 hertz rental says:

Why is there minimal pressure on the hawks in their own zone, they are transitioning with ease. Yes sharp passing helps but where is the pressure. Sorry guys I’m another expat Oiler fan and I stayed up all night for this garbage effort. Not just garbage play but it’s the lack of effort that twists the knife.

  168. Losing Hope says:

I think that would be a mistake

By my eye Nurse has been far worse and I wouldn’t drop him either.

I’d like to see Jones in but Rusty and Bear have been our best defencemen

  170. dessert1111 says:

Well, I’ve thought the Russell-Benning pair looked decent, and Koskinen looks stable.

  171. drglen says:

    66 hertz rental,

not ready to go… that’s coaching.. also.. it is an afternoon game.

they started playing ‘thinking’ reacting play rather than instinct.

We are not the USA as much as the propaganda machine tries. My forefathers and myself are proud to be a Canadians and you can stick that in your pipe and smoke your Trudope.

  174. Reja says:

    The real deal.

  175. drglen says:

score!!!!! Yes! oh, wait… still 3 goals down.

  176. LadiesloveSmid says:

    PK looks absolutely dismal.

    Goaltending poor for 40 minutes.

    Inability to break out.

Forecheck weak as hell, Chicago walking out of their zone.

Defence letting Chicago forwards walk in.

I’m not sure there’s even a silver lining. Only that Monday can’t possible be worse, this is the Edmonton oilers we’re talking about. Could be 13-3.

Have to win 3 of next 4.

  177. OriginalPouzar says:

At least the PP is still good. The PK on the other hand…..

  178. London Jon says:

Only benefit of getting run like this is they learn a lot about what doesn’t work, where they made mistakes. Tippett has been good with adjustments.

Can the team find their confidence in time?

    Ok send a message.

haven’t seen Kass last 6 minutes..

Maybe they needed a stinker to wake up.

  184. RT26 says:

I worry that we score a few late in the game. The team might feel if we had better luck with the posts that we would be right there.

I would rather lose by 5 and see how we respond. Chicago is faster to the puck, is sitting on our breakout patterns and has nothing to lose.
