Edmonton Oilers won the team’s first pre-season game at home versus the Winnipeg Jets by a 4-0 score. The game was closer than the totals that will land in the official guide and record book, but there was plenty to like for the home fans. The team played a structured game, and goaltender Stuart Skinner (and then Calvin Pickard) made quality stops. Dylan Holloway scored a goal and looked dangerous all night, and the NHL players in the game showed why they belong. We’re on to Seattle.

LINES AND PAIRINGS
It was a fun game to watch and I think the trends are good for several hopefuls. I’m always interested to see what the coaches are thinking and we got a couple of fabulous questions answered. Dmitri Samorukov and Markus Niemelainen both saw action with veterans, the only difference being Samorukov played right side and had a lefty partner. Also, Ryan McLeod had two NHL wingers and Dylan Holloway had a couple of players trying to win fourth-line jobs. My takeaway: Only one on the night. The coaches challenged Holloway to make something happen on the second line. He delivered.
- RHD Evan Bouchard. He played well (assist, 24:32, two shots) with the puck, plenty of good passing and a howitzer from the point. He stood up at the blueline and showed calm feet. I expect he’s going to have a monster season.
- LHD Brett Kulak. He played big minutes (20:49) and used his speed to get out of trouble when the team was penned in a couple of times (six HDSC against at five-on-five). Effective on the PK. I think Kulak-Bouchard is going to be the second pairing opening night. Not exactly rocket science, but good to know the coaching staff is thinking this way.
- LHD Ryan Murray. Played just shy of 20 minutes on the night, soid on the PK, but had some moments (five HDSC against at five-on-five) that looked a little on the edge. Impossible to project much into the night beyond he is a veteran and doesn’t panic when there are five HDSC against on his shifts.
- LHD Dmitri Samorukov. He looked a little late on a few dangerous plays, not exactly out of position but not impacting the play, either. He played the least against Dubois’ line, I thought his pairing would be the second one. It’s important not to bury him after one game, I would like to see him with a RH partner.
- LHD Markus Niemelainen. He scored early and seemed energized, good speed and better coverage plus some hits. He faced the Dubois line 4:40 at five on five (1-1 shots, 1-0 goals) and that was two more minutes than Samorukov (top pair: six minutes). His coverage a year ago needed work, so last night was encouraging. Let’s all calm down on him making the team, many miles to go.
- RHD Jason Demers. An assist, four blocked shots, 18:29. I thought he handled the puck and covered well, but his speed might be a concern. I think he has a chance to make the team but it’s going to be both sides of a long play to reach the finish line. Veteran defensemen help improve digestion and sleep patterns.
- Defensive star: Based on expectation, my answer is Niemelainen.
- Defensive disappointment: None. Way too soon to make that kind of call.
- Stuart Skinner. He looked strong to me, good positioning, quick glove, great awareness. He looks confident and ready, moves well. Could it be? A homegrown goaltender! Oh, pish posh! And yet…..
- Calvin Pickard. Less busy but with more high danger (five to Skinner’s three) and he played well. No heartache moments from either goalie. Is that allowed?
- RW Jesse Puljujarvi. He made a nice play along the wall before the first goal, should have been credited with an assist but no dice. He picked up a second one on the Hamblin goal. He continued to forecheck effectively, causing pucks to glance off his sticks and forcing defenders to send less effective area passes. He made a couple of deft passes of his own in the defensive zone for breakouts, but did get caught along the wall a couple of times.
- LW Tyler Benson. He had some jump and played with some edge to my eye. Played almost 15 minutes, no shots (he needs to get to the puck and make things happen), passed well (a couple of dandy passes early) and earned another game. I’d love to see him get five shots on goal in a game. Good ones.
- RW Jake Virtanen. He was involved in a lot of things, had three hits but the biggest hit saw him on the receiving end. I don’t think he stood out in any way, but he had a couple of looks.
- LC Brad Malone. He helped himself. Had an assist, played an aggressive game and went 7-6 on the dot. Seven hits, some in your face time, three shots. If there’s a race for the No. 4 center job, he’s in that race.
- LW Warren Foegele. He had an assist, a couple of giveaways and skated miles. I don’t think his job is in danger for hockey reasons, the cap is the issue. My dream is a Foegele-Nuge-Puljujarvi No. 3 line this season.
- RC Noah Philp. He had an assist and played well, but didn’t play much. I wanted to see him in more of a feature role in these early games, but 10:45 with two rookie wingers isn’t exactly ideal. Maybe the coach was testing ala Holloway. Won seven of nine on the dot, he needs a bigger challenge. He can turn over pucks.
- LW Reid Schaefer. He wasn’t noticed much early (the entire line was a scotch mist for the first while) but came on later and showed some things. He had one promising sortie (no shots) and a couple of giveaways.
- RW Xavier Bourgault. Not as dynamic against a higher calibre group, he still managed a takeaway and that relentless pursuit of the puck was on full display. One shot and a high danger. I think he’s a recall candidate by mid-season but there’s much to know and the leap from junior to the AHL is a big one.
- LW Dylan Holloway. Scored a goal, could have had two more, six shots, dynamic skating, a threat on most shifts. He’s good. Three takeaways, one HDSC, he was the best Oilers player in the game.
- LC James Hamblin. Scored a goal, another Hamblin special where he anticipated the play and was quicker to the puck than his opponent. Three high danger chances, physical, he’s going to push right to the end. My guess is he is a mid-season recall.
- RW Jake Chiasson. He impressed in just 7:30, including a takeaway, plus he drew a penalty. I imagine he’ll be an early cut but he showed well here and in Penticton.
- LC Ryan McLeod. He’s so impressive. Scored a goal, three shots, one HDSC, his line was matched up for 8:22 against the Dubois line (outshot 4-3 but no goals and zero HDSC). I think he could land on a feature line this season.
TONIGHT’S LINEUP (MAYBE)
This has appeared online and things change, but the roster headed to Seattle might look like this:
- Goalies: Olivier Rodrigue, Ryan Fanti
- Left Defense: Philip Broberg, Markus Niemelainen, Alex Peters, Yanni Kaldis
- Right Defense: Tyson Barrie, Mike Kesselring, Max Wanner
- Center: Derek Ryan, Devin Shore, Greg McKegg, Noah Philp
- Left Wing: James Hamblin, Tyler Benson, Luke Esposito, Reid Schaefer
- Right Wing: Kailer Yamamoto, Seth Griffith, Jake Virtanen, Filip Engaras, Dino Kambeitz
I’m taking some license here with the forwards, Hamblin could play center and one of the listed pivots elsewhere. It’s a work trip for sure, the only NHL skill forward on the trip is Kailer Yamamoto. I like the group, it will be a strong test and I do think a player who shines in this situation, like Holloway last night (who was at home but not on a feature line to start), will earn extra points from all observers.

This game seemed more scrambly than the first one. Some thoughts:
The goalies looked decent based on my expectations, minus Fanti on that wraparound.
Kesselring is too high event for his skill set…if he can improve his puck skills he has a high ceiling but it’s a long shot for him to make it as someone other than a shut down guy. Overall, a good game.
Peters looks better than a guy who’s played mostly ECHL.
Wanner looks good for a 2021 7th round pick but this is likely his only game. I imagine he’s signed then heads back to junior.
So far Nemo > Broberg IMO. Barrie was obviously the vet out there.
For forwards, Benson had another good game. Philp continues to play a steady game as the competition rises, good for him. I don’t see him making this roster though – has anyone ever made the jump straight from CIS to the NHL?
Hamblin was decent, didn’t notice Schaeffer much, JV is a bit frustrating. Ryan and Shore as expected. I don’t see Shore making this team. Was impressed by Janmark’s closing speed on a backcheck.
So far, considering their salary differences and likelihood of getting claimed, I’d waive Foegele before Ryan or Janmark.
Yamamoto was fine, obviously a vet. Esposito as expected, physical. I had to double check that McKegg actually played – I have virtually no memory of him.
Just checking the box score, and it lists Matvey Petrov as having played 3+ minutes on the PK tonight. I also notice only 5 D listed, so I’m guessing that’s a mistake and the stat line is for Alex Peters?
I see Tyler Benson had 5 SOG too. Didn’t someone call for that earlier? No idea if any of them were of the dangerous variety.
You are correct, re: Peters.
Benson had a breakaway and a good hard slot shot amongst those 5 SOG.
Cool, thanks.
Fanti looks great for a guy with 1 game of pro experience. Nice to have some back pressure on Skinner when he’s holding out for a contract this time next year.
Schaefffer will be staying behind in Seattle.
I hope this decision does not leave Schaeffer sleepless in Seattle.
Oilers should have pulled their goalie in the 1st period.
Love to see Shore wiping out the net in desperation on the PK….some guys just don’t know the word “exhibition”
Seattle’s top power play can’t score a 5v3 goal against the Bakersfield Condors with their backup goalie. LOL.
5 on 3 against for a minute. Hamblin is the lone F.
Shore took the second FO.
Michaels and Stauffer would be better to listen to if they didn’t go off on these pointless tangents.
To clarify: They’re a good way to fill air time during stoppages in play, but not while the play is going on.
Always thought Michael’s style was made for TV – we can see what’s happening so don’t need bang on play by play.
Bingo. Couldn’t stand Michaels on the radio for that reason.
I like TV Michaels, tho.
Kesselring with a strong sortie
Hamblin is okay. Just took first shift after the elbow.
Seattle has more roster players on the ice tonight, I hope? If not, they’ve got a lot of really big rookies.
The Oilers defense were AWOL on the Squids 3rd goal. Yamamoto the loan player back trying to defend a 2 on 1.
Oilers PP isn’t very effective tonight.
Munny, I’m not liking the look of our 49ers QB situation this year. That game yesterday was puke worthy.
When did we like the look of our QB situation lol?
I would think back in the 1980s it wasn’t too, too bad.
True. Just think about the picks that they gave away in order to move up and draft Trey Lance. Oof!
the Aaron Rodgers curse…
Haha, that Kraken wave screen wipe is ridiculous and why are they going to split screen with a wipe with 8 seconds left in the period?!!?! Haha, so ‘amateur hour’ on some of these preseason broadcasts. It’s like a 2 second wave that covers the action. Some young graphic designer was super proud of that wave-wipe.
I’m just confounded that they choose this option in house when the whole special thing about climate pledge is that they have two screens.
Fanti stays calm and cool on a shortie breakaway against
JV misses the net from the slot on the Match power play.
Then Fanti saves a breakaway on the same Match power play.
He’s going to be seeing that one while trying to fall asleep tonight.
Yeah he really needed that one.
Liking Benson’s game tonight.
Vurtoonen with an embarassing gaffe playing point on the PP…HDSC ensues.
Barrie is so slick with the puck on the offensive blue line.
Nice to see him in form.
Benson sticking up for Hamblin who took an intentional headshot
Raffi Torres would’ve been proud of that one
Wanner will play that different next time
Yeah, that was a junior hockey defenseman looking a bit exposed. Fanti overcommitted, too.
So will Fanti, and likely Schaffer won’t shoot glove from there next time.
Good exhibition lessons all around
Benson fast enough for breakaways apparently
Fanti takes the crease.
Wanner reappears
Wow, what a shot!
Original Pouzar… can you explain why it’s a good thing to have ELC players with bonuses on the opening roster? Is it? Is there a benefit to having ELCs with bonuses on the roster to begin the season and being as close as possible to the cap with 2 players on LTIR? I don’t quite understand. If that’s the case, should they have Holloway, Broberg, Bouchard, Samorukov, and Bourgault all on the roster in case they need to call them up later? A 21 player roster with all those players on it and Benson or Shore (with Ryan and Janmark waived ends up being 87k to 187k under the cap. I’m sure that won’t happen, but what is the advantage of bonuses on opening roster?
This might help.
“The rules regarding performance bonuses and the salary cap are somewhat complex. Essentially, when the team is in LTIR like the Oilers are, if the player starts the season with the team, his performance bonus goes into a performance bonus pool. If he doesn’t, the difference of that performance bonus counts against the cap if the player is called up during the season and his performance bonus exceeds what is in the pool. In other words, bringing Holloway up after the first game likely brings him in at a $1.4 million cap hit versus the $925K his cap hit is now.”
https://thehockeywriters.com/oilers-dylan-holloway-looks-good-early-2022-preseason/
If not on the opening day roster, if you call them up later in the season, the full cap hit including bonuses is added to the team cap. If they are on the opening day roster, if you call them up, the cap hit NOT including bonuses is added to the team cap.
Okay, thanks for the explanation.
If that’s the case, is there a chance Ryan and/or Janmark get waived if there isn’t a trade and they go with a 21-player roster?
Bourgault and Samorukov haven’t really forced the issue, but they could be callups later in the year. If so, would it be smart to have this as the opening roster:
Kane / McDavid / Puljujarvi
Hyman / Draisaitl / Yamamoto
Holloway / Nugent-Hopkins / Foegele
Benson (or Shore) / McLeod / Bourgault
Nurse / Ceci
Kulak / Bouchard
Broberg / Barrie
Samorukov
Campbell
Skinner
That comes to within $87 to $187k of the cap depending on whether it is Shore or Benson. (Benson is $100k cheaper).
This would make the cap hit on Holloway, Bourgault, Bouchard, Broberg, and Samorukov all smaller if they get called up eventually. Samorukov, as a lower draft pick might not have much in bonuses anyway, so maybe that doesn’t matter. But there is another reason for having Samorukov on the roster as he has to clear waivers to be sent down and I think there is a good chance he gets claimed.
If Foegele or someone else isn’t traded, this may have to be the roster until someone is traded, no?
Then you send Bourgault and Samorukov down (or trade Samorukov?) and bring up Murray and Janmark (if they haven’t been claimed). That would be a 21-person roster with a whopping $12,667 in cap space. Jeepers it’s tight.
Through one period the Oilers’ C squad is at least playing the Kraken’s B squad even. Strong showing thus far from our depth players.
Niemo had a couple of tough moments out there in his own zone.
He got stuck out there for 2 mins after a shorthanded rush…collapsed to the blue paint but didn’t hurt the team to my eye
I am concerned that Wanner may have taken a skate or skate boot to the face.
Anyone see anything?
Looks like he didn’t play the last 6 minutes
Great vision pass by Janmark down the blueline leads to a blast off the post from Kesselring
I think it’s very cool that this fall is the 10-year anniversary of Skinner, Benson, and Hamblin playing Bantam AAA together.
Peters gets the puck in the net from a point blast but called back for goalie contact on Philp. nice shift from the Fs though.
Because Philp made contact with the goalie, it’s ruled No-ah goal.
He was outside the crease and the contact didn’t really disrupt the goalie. I don’t see how that is not a goal.
Intent to blow the play dead prior to puck entering the net.
I see what you did there 😏
But there was No-ah contact.
The Oilers could not challenge, and for the dyslexics out there I thought Woody was going to Philp his lid.
Nice piece of work from Janmark.
Broberg doesn’t miss a shift
Broberg takes a puck to the face.
Hand
Looked like he grabbed his face.
Rafferty’s skill is undeniable. He’s like Bobby Orr among children. I mean it was only a 20 foot pass, but still..
Peters snuffs out a Seattle foray at the blue line with aplomb.
Rodrigue impresses early
Bob:
Ceci might eb available as early as Wednesday’s game.
Deharnais a couple of weeks. Wrist.
Savoie a long way away. Lower body.
Lavoie still weeks.
I’m glad people get to see why Holloway is a top 20 prospect in the league.
Had no doubt in my mind that he will become an impact forward
1) I’ve long posted about young skill players not being able to show NHL readiness in exhibition games, let alone early exhibition games. Fast, big, skilled young players often show very well in exhibition but what Holloway is doing is on another level so far being the best player in every game he plays, impacting the game every shift and producing. One game at a time and lets see how he progresses.
2) I think we’ll see Broberg has some “rookie stretches” where he struggles (and maybe even gets a night off or minutes reduced in a 7D set-up) and stretches where he’ll show why we think he’s the 2LD of the future behind Nurse. A year from now we’ll be talking about Kulak as Broberg cover at 2LD.
3) If Bouch has “learned” to be a bit more “forceful” like he was last night, using the big and strong body more, well, damn if he’s not going to be that true 1RD sooner than we think. One game at a time but I saw him more forceful and physical last night.
4) I want to put Benson in that conversation for that 12F spot (they have room for one “league min” player on the suspected 21 player roster) – fighting with the likes of McKegg and Malone. He doesn’t play centre and, if he looks good like he did last night, but doesn’t get a few apples on his scorecard, well, he’ll be on waivers again.
5) There are various accounts that the plan was to call Holloway up late in the season last year but he got hurt again (he missed that month with the thigh injury) and that kiboshed it.
6) Jay W. is testing some guys going back to back tonight. Tough sledding – morning skate yesterday, a game, morning skate today, same day flight to Seattle, game, same day flight back to Edmonton – wow.
7)
I did find it interesting that Holloway had the 2:40, Foegele was in the 1:30 range and JP only had about 30 seconds. I’m not sure the hesitation to try Jesse out as a PK guy – he has lots of skills that should translate – a great stick is a key to a forward’s PK ability and Jesse has that for knocking down pucks and creating puck mistakes by attackers.
The Oilers have returned Chiasson to WHL and Ceci on the ice skating with the main group today according to DNB.
Good showing by Junior Chaser this camp, IMO. We should expect a strong year in the Dub.
I thought so too. I think he has the potential to exceed his draft position.
No idea why this got caught in the filter.
Brandon is a word the filter catches.
Now I know why young people talk in code nowadays.
Since when did young people not talk in code?
Did anyone else notice that the Oilers ran out 3 forwards on the PK at one point last night?
Benson-Holloway-Malone and I think Demers.
Kind of odd.
It would be easy to jump on the Holloway train…but ( like McLeod a few years ago) I am just not surprised. Would bet the house that Dylan will grossly outplay Derek Ryan this year.
Guys that I really had no idea about ( outside of OP’s excellent scouting) that impressed were Hamblin and Filip.
Again, huge asterisks given the -incredibly – low NHL caliber yesterday.
Too many hyped prospects leaves this bitter fan waiting to see regular season results. preferably after New Year.

Kraken fans won’t have to wait long to get a look at top players acquired this summer. Two-time Stanley Cup winner and in-demand free agent Andre Burakovsky will suit up for Monday’s matchup against division rival Edmonton at Climate Pledge Arena. He’s been playing on a forward line with fellow Swede center Alex Wennberg and winger Joonas Donskoi during training camp.
Oliver Bjorkstrand, acquired in a much-praised trade by GM Ron Francis, appears to slot with Matty Beniers (remember him?) and Ryan Donato (back to cheers of Kraken faithful). The line has been together since Thursday’s opening camp day.
Those two forward lines will be fun to watch-and don’t forget Monday’s return of Brandon Tanev from season-ending knee surgery last year, joining center Morgan Geekie (fan favorites all over the rink) and wing Jesper Froden, 27, signed by Boston last season after great success in Sweden’s top pro league.
Maybe even more enticing is the prospect of a power play unit rolling out Burakovsky, Beniers, Bjorkstrand, Wennberg and another new guy, veteran defenseman and free agent signee, Justin Schultz, who will quarterback the unit if Edmonton gets called for penalties.
Did you copy and paste this from someone else’s article?
Man that is a really weird post. You are right, it just reads as if it has been copied and pasted from the Seattle equivalent of the Edmonton Sun.

Written by Bob Condor.
Heh. I do not miss the days when the Oilers PR team had to spin narratives similar to this..
Very glad you were able to hyperlink all of the player names, that was quite helpful in lauding the incredible moves this offseason by the Kraken. In-demand free agent Burakovsky surely will benefit from Donskoi’s 2 goal season last campaign, and don’t forget, Alex Wennberg also has a 2 goal season on his resume. This type of high-powered offense will put almost as much fear into their opponents as newly signed Norris favorite Brogan Rafferty will from the back end.
Wow that’s a vaunted top power play unit. Maybe one or two of them would make the Oilers second power play unit, so I’m impressed.
At first you start reading this and half wonder why you are even reading this hyped up baloney for an expansion team that’s still going nowhere.
Then… presto! it’s Harpers Hair with another troll post lol
and he did not credit the writer. I thought that was not allowed here?
I recall you chiding OP for lack of citations, and yet, here we are.
He would also chide OP for copying and pasting too much from an article because he said it would deny the article website traffic.
And then HH posts 1/3 of an article and doesn’t even cite it.
Don’t it always seem to go, that you don’t know what you’ve got till its gone.
Man, we are back to playing with matches really quickly.
Read my mind.
I myself enjoy hearing divisional rivals news and propaganda. It makes it sweeter when we beat them especially Calgary.
You’re right, you’re right. I should have skipped over the plagiarism.
Climate Pledge Arena? That’s the actual name? Seriously?
Blatant plagiarism.
