The injury to Evander Kane has ignited trade talk among Oilers fans. Don’t ask me to explain, if you know, you know. The excerpt above is from a December 2019 pre-game post involving Edmonton and the Carolina Hurricanes. Since then, general manager Ken Holland has traded several young defensemen (Caleb Jones, Ethan Bear, William Lagesson, Dmitri Samorukov) with varying degrees of success. If Holland decides to have a run during the season using the LTIR pool from Evander Kane’s contract, where would he shop? What would it cost?

WHAT TO EXPECT IN NOVEMBER
- At home to: NAS, NJD, DAL (Expected 2-1-0) (Actual 1-2-0)
- On the road to: WAS, TBY, CAR, FLA (Expected 1-2-1) (Actual 1-1-0)
- At home to: LAK, VEG (Expected 1-0-1) (Actual 0-0-0)
- On the road to: NJD, NYI, NYR (Expected (1-1-1) (Actual 0-0-0)
- At home to: FLA (Expected 1-0-0) (Actual 0-0-0)
- On the road to: CHI (Expected (1-0-0) (Actual 0-0-0)
- November expected result: 7-4-3, 17 points in 14 games
- Actual November results: 2-3-0, 4 points in 5 games
- October results: 6-3-0, 12 points in 9 games
- Oilers in 2022-23: 8-6-0, 16 points in 14 games
A win tonight would set up the Oilers road trip as a success based on my expectations, and might go some ways to repairing the motzah balls homestand that began the month. A win means 9-6-0 through 15, that projects to 49-33-0, 98 points.
POSSIBLE LINEUP TONIGHT
This is my take on how things might go, although there are multiple options for Jay Woodcroft for the four lines. I’m hopeful Dylan Holloway gets a full shot, and would like to think the coach will keep the No. 1 line intact. If we see 11-7 again, it’s my opinion Kostin and Janmark will sit out until they’ve practiced more than once with the group. I’ll be watching the Kulak-Ceci pairing to see how they are deployed. Carolina has two No. 1 lines (Necas-Kotkianiemi-Svechnikov and Teravainen-Aho-Jarvis) so expect both the Nurse and Kulak pairings to be busy. Carolina played and lost last night, sometimes that gives the rested team an edge.
A TRADE?
Allow me to start by saying I’m dubious on the idea Ken Holland would pull the trigger on a deal. It’s too dangerous, and getting out from under when Kane comes back could prove to be excruciating for the organization. It’s a team game, and Kane is part of the team. Any usage of his cap hit while he’s away must be temporary.
What could temporary look like? Holland might look to bring back Kris Russell if Ryan Murray is not deemed suitable for the role. He could and will have a look at new acquisition Klim Kostin. If a smart trade appears, then making the deal could be easier short-term. I can’t see a Jakob Chychrun trade before he plays and establishes himself as a productive player again. That trade would also require a significant salary heading out and the Oilers don’t have an obvious expensive asset to deal unless you consider Tyson Barrie expendable (some do, some don’t). So let me hear it: WHO would you like to see Holland trade for with the Kane money, knowing the GM may have to flush cap when Kane may return?
PLEASE CHECK THE BLOG DAILY
In the last 12 months, people have clicked on my morning tweet promoting my daily blog post (this one for today) over 200,000 times. It is not the No. 1 entry to the blog but it’s up there. I’m not certain what changes twitter plans to make, but would ask you to come to the blog if you are unable to find the tweet promoting the daily post. Thanks and I appreciate it.

Sweet ass, old school
POKECHECK
I wasn’t even mad. Just amazed at the brass ones on the 3rd stringer.
oilers nightmare
With this set of forwards you either need a rock solid D or a G that can cover up the inevitable breakdowns. This D was never going to cut it and apparently the G is a wildcard as well.
For me I think it’s alittle turn down the skill and a little turn up the work your asses off. They seem to go into every game expecting being the most skilled team on the ice is what wins only to get embarrassed.

Per Oilers coach Jay Woodcroft, RW Kailer Yamamoto was returned to Edmonton for further evaluation on an injury. He obviously won’t play in Saturday’s road trip finale at FLA.
Prior to playing NJ, Oilers were 7-3 and I got panned for predicting a “must win” game – because i have this irrational need to see Oilers play at the highest possible level and get points to go with it.
Since then they have gone 1-4 and now are stumbling their way straight back into another Hunter1909 Deathmarch™
It’s like that sequence in Marathon Man(1976) when Dustin Hoffman’s character thinks he’s being saved from the evil dentist, only to find himself getting returned for another impromptu appointment.
Again you were right about the importance of the very winnable Jersey game that started our bad play of late.
Yeah…lol
Yeah, so when is Mike Smith coming back? And while we’re at it, can he bring Kleffa with him?
I hear Koskinnen is playing great in the Swiss League.
: p
Jack Campbe77
He’s saving it for the Playoffs.
Haven’t been able to watch the last two games but good news is they have had a relatively difficult set of opponents and the Pacific is still shitty.
Woodcroft hasn’t had to work through this kind of under-performance yet. Big test for a young coach.
Truth, but when a team has had a generational player for 7 seasons, if they aren’t challenging for a Cup it’s all moot to me
Other teams make it look easy. Cassidy keeps it rolling in Vegas, Montgomery goes in and Boston is better than last year
Our guys revert to chaos at every chance
Thr trouble with fans who think like you is…
You’re 100% right.
At least we won’t have to pay Bouchard much next year!
I was really looking forward to Jack C. building on the performance in Tampa and settling in to be the tender we were expecting…… .that certainly isn’t happening right now. It likely still does but, damn, did he ever go the other way. What was that?
I didn’t like how our forwards were so far away from our Dmen. Passing the puck through multiple Carolina forwards is not a good recipe. Their forwards were on top of our Dmen most of the evening.
And while the gaps between our D and their attacking F’s were huge, lanes were opening up to our net like crazy. There were problems all through our lineup, lots and lots of blame to go around.
What time does the game start?

Look it’s tough to outplay multiple backbreakers.
Ceci and Kulak shouldn’t have backed in on Svechnikov but the shot hit Soup square in the glove and he flicked it back into his own net. Backbreaker.
That weak sauce little backhander that should have been a flick of the blocker or stick and then a period buzzer, backbreaker.
They should have left that period down 2-1 instead Soup assured it was out of reach by multiple goals.
Mikko and Talbot were pains cause they gave up the first quick. Smith would glare or yell at his defense or occaisionaly pull a boner trying to lay the puck.
Soup is giving up multiple softies. Game after game after game. This staring into his own glove thing now is a no good bad sign.
Sit him for a bit. This isn’t working right now. He needs to collect himself and right the ship.
FFS I just wanted one year of somewhat normal goaltending. We went from volatile to “you’ll be in the ECHL soon” bad.
Unreal hahaha
Personally, I am happy Campbell is shitting the bed. It would not feel like a real Oilers season without a goalie controversy.
Time to start welding an exoskeleton for Mike Smith.
Incoming goalie apologist telling me none of the six goals were the fault of the goalie.
That ice, man. It was bad. Credit to the canes. They knew how to play on it and stuck to their game. Their goalie was better but it wasn’t hard to outduel Soup tonight…
I can’t remember, ever, seeing so many pucks bobbled and flubbed out there. We’re a high skill team. That ice totally killed our game. We couldn’t adjust and got spanked when soup let in a crap goal and his confidence tanked.
We could’ve help more but, holy crap, those were some bad goals against…
Summarizing!
Petrov extended his point streak to 12 games with an aPPle tonight in a 4-2 win. He has 8-13-21 in 15 games.
I bet Kenny somehow still got Soucy. From that trade that fell through. Obviously our defence is worse than we all imagined.
I have seen multiple posters wishing that we still had the ghosts of Keith, Russell and Smith.
Mr. The Bear was right all along. Screw the new-age style of quick skate like the wind defence. Goal suppression seems to be what we should have aimed for.
Thing is…you need both.
The highly mobile D evade pressure with incredible edge work then make high impact passes out of the zone or skate it out.
Ideally they are paired with more stay at home crease clearing D who cover for the rocket skaters.
Problem is, the Oilers D are somewhere in the middle.
So like, Hughes, Schenn, OEL, Myers?
How’s that working out?
They need to call up Hamblin and more guys that are willing to work. The effort isn’t there. This team just watches and waits for Mcdavid to do everything.
And McDavid isn’t infallible either. That first goal was 100% on him late in the period. It’s a dogshit effort in that situation and it changes the whole game.
Coach needs to take some heat.
The bloom is off the Woodflower…..
McDavid had a good game
That’s the spirit.
Jesse, too.
Not much else I can think of, though…
At least Jesse wasn’t on for a goal against . But , no shots , no hits , no apples . That’s the spirit.
But he did disrupt out there and sent good passes to Connor and Nuge. More than a few times, actually. He went to the front of the net repeatedly. Not many others did.
He stayed with Connor and Drai when they stacked the top line. I think the coaches recognized his good play as well.
Weird that he had no hits recorded. I remember him hitting Aho twice and another in the corner.
He had a terrible turnover at the end of the first in the defensive zone, leads to a goal. Game over.
That was bad. Tried to be physical and blew it. But he came to play and created a lot of chances. Can’t say the same about many others.
Foggy was good as well.
Bad goal and soup’s confidence goes down like a rocket sled on rails…
Ive already watched a “no confidence” goalie the last three years…now I gotta watch another one?
Over to you, Stu…
I’m starting to get concerned.
Well at least the Flamers lost again.
Winless in seven .
It might just be me, but I’ve noticed in the last few seasons when one Alberta team shits the bed, the other follows suit. Then they start to win again, and so does the other.
creepy…
I’m more concerned with the Oilers than I am with the Flames W-L record
FWIW Glendalough is a reasonable dram to help ease the pain of the Oil crapping the bed on a frosty eve.
Oilers are now -1 on goals for/against.
Canes have completely exposed both our goalie and defence tonight.
They exposed themselves
Five Million Bucks.
Not all on him though. We stunk tonight.
Campbell a hot mess. The D has not done him any favours tonight either. Now have to run with Skinner. Do you call up Picard????
Campbell absolutely shattered RN
Cambell be like GAA be damned, you boys cant play decent defence i am going to give you a -1.
Our goalie goalie is broken…
There is a chance this is one of the worst goaltending performances I’ve ever seen….. and when you stack it on top of the prior aggregate performance……. ya….
Oilers lost to the Hartford Whalers AKA Carolina Hurricanes 11-0 on February 13 1984.
Those boys must have went on a wicked bender the night before
They lost all 5 on the road trip. They knew how to party could you imagine if they had the big brother I-phone back then half would be in jail the other half would be doling out hush money.
A few months before they won their first cup? Huh.
You need to face adversity to win a Cup. That game was rock bottom Sather handled it like the Dad that he was.
Campbell is paying homage to both Smith and Koskinen tonight.
No, he was Salo-esque
Oilers now at even for goals for/against. Not. Good. At. All.
edit: this post did not age well
Campbell isn’t replacement level right now. This is a horrid, no good, utterly useless start.
This was the single biggest risk Kenny made this summer and oh my goodness it’s been an egg to start. Campbell had zero track record in the NHL and he was given a 5 year deal. I wanted two years, maybe three. Five was nuts for a guy who hadn’t started 70 games and who sucked for 20 of them.
Everything else is humdinger alright believe it or not. But Soup giving up a five spot in half his starts where he and not the damn team is to blame is unreal bad.
If this was Mikko or Smith there would be riots on the blog lol.
He should ride the damn pine for a week or two even if that means a trip to the press box. This is unacceptable.
I don’t understand the way Jack plays goal… the puck hit his right pad, the dude was chopping at his right pad, but he was looking left the whole time.
When’s Smith coming back?
Lol, lmao even. . .
svechnikov has scored a hat trick in both games played this year. Over half his goals are against the Oilers.
yeah, glad they don’t play each other again.
Is Bouchard supposed to be playing RD? Svechnikov was his man and he had time to read a novel before putting that one in.
This frickin guy…he’s gonna haunt soups nightmares…
Second career hatty. Both against oilers. Both against soup.
Brutal
The oilers will be 10 points back of Vegas after tonight. After only the 15th game…
Who cares, long season. Vegas didnt make the playoffs last year with a better team and will not sustain this run,
Vegas had an historic run of injuries last season.
This is what they look like healthy.
I completely agree with you Harper, Hill and Thompson are locks to continue with a .930 save percentage on the year
He’s not wrong. So if the goaltending regresses Vegas is a .500 team suddenly?
Obviously they are going to cool off at some point. But, they are a talented bunch and a decent bet to win a division whose preseason frontrunners both look like dumpster fires right now.
Yes Vegas is a good team, Oilers are too. One team is hot right now, one team is struggling with their game. Lots of runway left on the season and i think we have a group now that can deal with a little adversity.
They don’t have to.
Vegas is one of the highest scoring teams in the league and their +21 goal differential is trending to historic levels.
They have also played 9 games on the road and only 6 at home where they are 5-1-0
There team wasnt better. Yes they will cool off but they are still a good team.
.have 2 D men that are better than any Oilers D ..
Vegas had all their players healthy at the end of the year and couldn’t get it together to make a push for the playoffs. Doesn’t matter, I prefer the Oilers roster regardless of how the first 15 games of an 82 game schedule has gone.
Nothing special about that goal. Cycle. Shot on net. Go to the scoring areas. Work hard and get a lil lucky…
We can’t do that, it seems…
Hey have been a poor cycling team since Weight and Guerin
They cycle but don’t consistently create good scoring chances, especially if pressured hard
I couldn’t get the game on normal TV so watched fLames Bruins. The Bruins know how to cycle to create HDSC and manage the puck smartly
Team is checked out.
Cambell- terrible rebound
Ya, Jack Campbell – just not getting it done.
Biggest difference in this game, goaltending – solid at one end. Not even close to solid at the other.
No brainer to go back to Jack for tonight’s game. Skinner has been fine/OK in his last couple of games but Campbell had a plus performance and we have the opportunity to see if he gets on a roll, as he has a history of doing. This is a good situation.
I agree, for sure. I was 100% in favour of Campbell starting tonight – thought it was a no-brainer, and still do. He did NOT live up to his end of the bargain, not even close.
Campbell is going to require just a little patience (thanks Axl, great cover by Chris Cornell btw). Thank Gord there’s more than one way to ‘skin’ this cat.
Tip o’ the hat to Chris Cornell.
A giant walked among us.
Draisaitl has been absolute garbage tonight.
He sure was
He scores like a bigger, but I haven’t been impressed with the games I’ve seen
Waaaayyy too many turnovers and forced plays
The key is to develop and keep momentum. Turning the puck over too much kills it. More patience and strategy
At this point even if they are losing. The structure and puck management are what will get them to their goal, it has to start now, it has to be the focus. I wouldn’t increase ice time Od force the team to do it with only necessary redeployments- win doing it right or don’t win
Constant ‘Impossible Comebacks’ are entertaining but don’t lead to Cups
Bugger
Is Yamo hurt or did they decide to let him sit one out?
No official word (that I know of) but I think its probably a combo…..
I was thinking maybe the coach of the future may be getting into a bit of trouble here
As in does Trotz see the Oilers as an original 6 team?
But he did say the other day that the Oilers were open for business. So it is a good assumption they see the players as the issue
But… It was the GM that chose these guys. Left basically the same inconsistent group
I expected better overall play, but had no trust in the D as a group. Or that Campbell was suddenly something he’s never been. I thought Skimmer was ready to at least play 30
BOOM!!! Effortless!!! What a backhand!!!
3 semi-picks to set up that goal.
Well done crew!
