The Edmonton Oilers are struggling during November. Even with a poor record (3-5-0) a win tonight puts the team at 10-8-0 after 18 games and on a 91-point trajectory. There was talk of Edmonton winning the division before the season began, and a win tonight would get the Oilers within eight points of Vegas with each team playing the same number of games.
Eight points in the Bettman NHL is a gap of about six weeks for a good team playing well. If this Oilers team has ideas about the division title, a win tonight is necessary. It’s also important for the team’s playoff hopes so the game has some real drama despite coming early in the year.

Plenty of upset about the line shuffle by Jay Woodcroft yesterday, but the team is struggling and moving players around the roster can freshen things. Many fans are focused on one player being moved down the lineup but for me this is a team-wide slump.
Using five-on-five numbers, and centers as proxy for each line, Edmonton’s four lines look like this:
- McDavid solo: 10-11 (48 percent)
- Draisaitl solo: 10-13 (43.5 percent)
- 97-29 together: 3-2 (60 percent)
- McLeod: 4-7 (36 percent)
- Others: 3-4 (43 percent)
I’m not sure there’s a line that can argue in favour of staying intact in this group. This is poor by any stretch and my guess is the tweaks will bring a mixed bag of results and we’ll be looking at five or six line combinations by the end of the night. I’m not especially enamored with the chosen lines, but Evander Kane and Kailer Yamamoto being absent limits the options.
OILERS POSSIBLE ROSTER
I think fans can correctly ask why Warren Foegele moves up and Jesse Puljujarvi down, but the fact remains that both men (and Kailer Yamamoto) have had plenty of track (coming up on 20 games) without scoring much at five-on-five. I would move Holloway up, but that’s not yet in the cards and I respect the decision by the coach. Bakersfield is an option for Holloway and one I think Edmonton should utilize at this time That’s a change in direction for me, but the shuffle came and Holloway remains at the bottom of the deck. Time to send him down.
Brad Malone got the call yesterday, speculation has Kailer Yamamoto unlikely to go on the road trip and perhaps we see Holloway sent out. Malone is an admirable player, working hard for a decade in the minors in order to be an NHL option (he has played 209 NHL games). He brings some rugged play and checking skills, and is a center. He is 33 years old and was chosen eight picks after Linus Omark in the 2007 draft. Malone’s 209 games makes him a draft success considering round he was chosen (fourth) and overall selection (No. 105).
CONDORS GET FLATTENED
Xavier Bourgault and Philip Broberg picked up assists on the Seth Griffith goal last night, making the score 5-1 for the Calgary Wranglers at the final whistle. The Condors PK was putrid and Calgary has plenty of skill. The two teams play again tonight and one expects a better effort.
I’m getting ready to publish the winter top 20 in early December and am most interested in Philip Broberg’s progress. There were many comments about his preseason performance, one of the things I wanted to track once he began playing was his current levels versus last season.
Offensively, he’s on track. Broberg is 2-1-3 in five games, down slightly in points-per-game from last year (.71) but nothing that random can’t explain. Last year at even strength, Broberg’s on-ice goal differential was 30-15 (67 percent), No. 1 among the Condors 2021-22 blue. This season? Interesting early results.
Broberg is at 50 percent with 2-2 goals over five games. That means the offense is low-event compared to Phil Kemp and Mike Kesselring (19 goals in 13 games). Miles to go in order to reach last season’s heights, but the Broberg minutes aren’t a drag and the young man is building a story. Many Oilers fans see Broberg and think Trevor Zegras and I get it, but that conversation isn’t germane to the evaluation of Broberg as a player. I think we’ll see him in the NHL soon.
When you are averaging 3.5 GA per game, and often chasing lead, not a lot of room to get bottom 6 going.
When you have a rookie who definitely is going to hit 200 nhl games but is at point he’s clearly starting to hesitate fearing mistakes – best to send him down log some big minutes and slate miles.
Get the defensive structure and pk up to average – then bring him back.
He’s not the biggest problem by a mile but until some of those issues are fixed – there’s probably a better place for him to be.
And again oil currently sit in 7th and have 3 games in hand on LA. As long as they can stay in the pack Kane is coming back and his salary banked creates much more flexibility at deadline. Sky is far from falling.
We need a support group for oiler fanatics who also love Daryll Sutter! I struggle to reconcile the two
Just watching skinners interview. Although he also seems like a genuinely nice guy. He has a quiet confidence. I wonder how many goalies are the level of ‘nice’ and humble that Jack qualifies as. Kind of opposite Mike Smith.
wonder if this team thrives on a more intense competitive tender back there. Someone who helps drag them into the fight like Smitty did. Thoughts?
I think this team thrives on goalies that stop the puck. 🙂
Woody not sure if Yams making the trip. Says they will make that evaluation tomorrow, but he has been improving every day.
Was that from the pre or post game interview?
Asking because Woody said as much before the game today
Post-game, although I didn’t state it quite right. He started off by saying that he “wasn’t sure if Yams would be coming with them or joining them later on the trip” and then that the eval would be done tomorrow.
Beat the (current) best in the west!
Should get easier from here right?
BRING ON THE…(Looks at schedule) oh shit…
NJ’s winning streak has to end at some point right? Can’t see why it can’t be broken by the Oilers right guys? …Guys!?
You don’t think?
Oilers broke early season winning streaks by the Blues and Pens and gave the Panthers their first home regulation loss of the season….
Yup.
Also coughed up a 2 goal lead in order to lose to the Devils last time out (ie – they’re no reason they can’t beat them).
When the Oilers and Devils played a couple of weeks ago both teams were sporting a 7-3 record. As of this minute the Devils are 15-3 while we’re sitting at 10-8.
Refs start the game calling ticky tack bush league penalties and end the game allowing full out tackles.
As is tradition.
The holding of Janmark stick was almost comical the Ref was is in perfect position to call it. It reminded me of a WWE Referee
Do yourself a favor and rewatch the winner and listen for harnaryans voice crack on the connorrrrrr mcdaaaaaviiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiIIIIIIIIid.
it’s probably my least favorite thing about his calls TBH. . .
Me too, that’s why I enjoyed the fail!
Holloway 4:40 ice time
Last shift was somewhere around the 17 minute mark of the 2nd period. Same with Shore.
Send him down
When the coach went to 3 lines, he deserved to not be part of it every bit as much as Shore and Ryan – more bad than good in that 4:40.
I’m sure Holland will make the move soon enough here.
Time to bring in Malone and set this team straight.
He’s all this team needs right now.
Great game! Vegas is pretty good team – but yah know- so are the Oilers. It would be a hell of a playoff series, I hope we get to see it at some point.
I kept noticing the Oilers throwing away cutesy passes, little toe drag floaters that Vegas just ate up. I thought the team did seem a little hesitant, the confidence and on ice communication/chemistry is still forming. But they had some nice moments in the o zone.
Skinner played great though, I really can’t fault him on any of the goals. (Fluke, PS, third goal maybe but he made so many good saves)
Refereeing was shit but this is the NHL; just have to embrace it at this point!
Oilers snap the Devils 12 G win streak? Gonna be interesting!
The tying 3rd Goal by Stone was a absolute rocket top shelf where Grandma used to keep the cookies.
Are the Oilers a good team?
It’s 20 games into the season and the Oilers are getting handily outshot and usually out chanced every night.
I thought this would be the year that they would finally break through into a contending calibre team, but this squad looks worse than last season’s team.
Come on now.
On the season the Oilers are exactly 50% on scoring chances, a shade more than 52% on HD scoring chances.
Natural stat trick has the Oilers at 15 and 16 for those metrics.
If your best metrics are 16ish out of 32 and the rest of your metrics are bottom ten, well I would say that puts them in average territory at best.
Frustrating, as most of us have been waiting our entire adult lives for the Oilers to have a good squad.
Honestly, I’m just amazed how angry folks are after an OT win against the best team in the West.
Meh I enjoy the games. That game was fucking fun to watch. This team has been fun to watch for a while now. We are watching likely one of the peak seasons of Connor McDavid.
They’re 10-8, they haven’t really brought their A game yet and the schedule has been decently tough. They play a little too fine with their shots/passes and I think don’t generate shots all the time even when they create HD chances. As other posters have said, the SC data looks pretty even for this team. I bet they were close on chances in this game too.
They need to peak in April, not November. They still have time to improve. But that was a great effort, two good teams. Skinner was good and so was Hill.
They did get outshot though so throw it away amirite?
Oilers have played:
14 teams that made the playoffs last year
Plus Jersey
Plus Buff when they were hot
Vancouver and Chicago have been the only “easy games” so far.
They also played St. Louis when they were ice cold if we are going to frame the schedule.
Yeah, the Oilers haven’t had an easy schedule, but last season when Woodcroft took over, I believe the Oilers had the hardest remaining schedule out of all teams. Well they carried the play and won a majority of games down the stretch….
The hockey they have been playing is not encouraging at all.
Uh, no. The Blues were 2-0 when the Oilers played them the 1st time. 3-1 when the Oilers played them the 2nd time (the Oilers started the Blues 8 game losing streak, or whatever it was).
The Blues have been bad on the season.
You can’t give credit to teams like Buffalo, if you are talking about the schedule being tough because the Oilers are facing last year’s playoff teams.
There is always an excuse to be made…
And you also ignored the part where the Oilers were not getting caved on all the advanced stats last season after Woodcroft took over despite having a tough remaining schedule.
A tough schedule is not a good excuse for playing poorly. Where would the Oilers be in the standings right now if McDavid hadn’t been scoring like its the 80s for the whole season thus far?
He’s going to slow down a little at some point.
Do you honestly not think the Oilers as a whole won’t perform better? I guess you don’t..
They showed they can do it last year. You’d like to see them bring it every night for 82 games, but them not doing it consistently through the first 18 games isn’t a death knell.
I just don’t know how upset you want me to be after beating a pretty good team.
I’m not sure the Oilers had a 20ish game stretch with as poor advanced stats last year as the first 20ish this year.
Maybe when they lost nearly their whole D core to injury? I still think they were better in possession.
This season after 18 games:
47.2% SF
50.0% SCF
52.2% HDCF
Last season after 18 games:
48.5% SF
50.1% SCF
47.6% HDCF
IIRC their fancies were quite good during the 2-11-2 stretch last year.
The main things preventing me from getting too upset at this point are 1) we KNOW they can be better than this, and 2) they haven’t been that bad (the team is not in any kind of hole at this point).
With a 15 game slate on today, I chose flames/panthers, canadiens/flyers, and of course oilers/knights. I chose well! Today was a treat
In addition to three assists for Nuge, two really nice assists by Nurse tonight.
And Nurse saved a goal, bailing out Stu when he went out to play the puck.
What a game winner! My brain went bananas. I was thinking “shoot” then “he’s to close for a move!” Then “the d has him” then “he’s got no room to cut across” then I couldn’t figure out what happened… omg…that was unreal…all in the span of 1 second…
Man we are lucky to have that guy to watch every game. However we aren’t going anywhere until some things are fixed..
Agreed. I am no hockey expert and only fan but our D core is simply doesn’t look good enough. We have 2 top 4 D and the rest are bottom pairing at best.
Pieterangelo gonna get to watch that replay for the next ten years, lol. Sweet.
Jesus, Ridiculous skill. It’s kind of maddening that 97 can pull that off for a W which masks the lack of situational play for many on this team.
Vegas did score the tying goal off an icing that wasn’t an icing.
Also, the fancy stats say the Oilers lead the HD chances tonight 12-10 and their xG% was 49.53% (despite the shots being 23-34).
Sure yep should not have been icing, but how does a team with a 3-2 lead let up a shot to their best shooter from top dead center in the slot? That was the cleanest look for anyone all game. Should never happen. It’s horrible situational game play at this level.
#37 was at the fin red line when the goal was scored. 3-2 lead. Divisional opponent.
McJesus is the only person in the sport that can tell the hockey gods to fuck off. God bless him.
1st Start – Stu
2nd Star – Stu
3rd Star – McD
Remember when Eichel was telling everyone he was the best player in his draft?
I’m glad the Flames didn’t get him and they panicked and put all their eggs in one basket with Vanilla tasting Huberdeau and can disappear for weeks at a time Kadri.
Nice goal from McDavid. Don’t want to see Murray again along with Shore and Holloway(needs to go down for 20 games. Jesse is soon to be on this list.
Boosh, Pool and a 1st for Karlsson with 50% retained.
Thanks to Mr Skinner!
18 steak AND lobster dinners better be coming Stu’s way.
WOWSA !!!!!
If KnightRain’s entire drink isn’t lying in a pool on his floor, I don’t know what it takes…
😉
lol I was so nervous I actually downed it and was gonna make another if we went to a shootout! Win/win!
One of a kind
and I was yelling at them to change off too lol
Was thinking the same.
For Ben
BOOM!!! OMG!!! How does he do it!!!
what a shot
holy cow!
Connor’s honour!
Wow 97 with the winner!!!!!!!
We’re not worthy. Jesus.
Dear Gord, what a beaut
Holy hell what a goal by McDavid.
Drai and his reaching in the Dzone, as opposed to skating, is pushing me off tonight. Skate, man. Smh
Just doesn’t have it defensively tonight. He and Bouch should be on the ice together
Nuge and Stu yuge
Draisattl’s 7th giveaway from passes (by my count) leads to a goal against
Clear second best team on the ice tonight. Maybe 0 shots in the last 10 minutes?
Never have I watched a team that makes me more stressed in our own zone with full control of the puck… er grenade..
Oilers lucky to get to OT. Of 43 loose pucks that period, VGK got 49 of them.
Nice to see Jay give 97 and 29 a break before the OT period by playing 71’s line instead.
Agreed. Smart
My god this team is terrible in their own end.
Can we switch the puck for an orange street hockey ball? It might be better…
Looking absolutely lost right now. No intention behind any plays.
Leon looks gassed
He always looks like that on defense.
Well they won’t win shit until that changes.
I think that would require some personnel changes…
Vegas is playing to guarantee a point. Happy to tie up the puck and kill the clock.
Nielsen would be waving the flag tonight
Murray. Spilled my drink. Thanks man…
Pretty clear who the NHL wants to win this game.
Terrible icing call but Drasaitl soft as American butter on that board battle.
Had full control and just gave it away. Yuck from a leader, yuck.
Looks right at the ref looking right at him with his arms wrapped around janmark’s stick lol
I wish I could phone it in at work like an NHL official
