The Edmonton Oilers played well on their road trip (collective shot share for the three games 80-60 at five-on-five, that’s 54 percent) but could have lost all three games. It was the youngsters who got the ball rolling in Madison Square Garden, and perhaps that’s the beginning of a substantial run for a team that needs value contracts to perform big roles.

WHAT TO EXPECT IN NOVEMBER
- At home to: NAS, NJD, DAL (Expected 2-1-0) (Actual 1-2-0)
- On the road to: WAS, TBY, CAR, FLA (Expected 1-2-1) (Actual 2-2-0)
- At home to: LAK, VEG (Expected 1-0-1) (Actual 1-1-0)
- On the road to: NJD, NYI, NYR (Expected 1-1-1) (Actual (1-2-0)
- At home to: FLA (Expected 1-0-0) (Actual 0-0-0)
- On the road to: CHI (Expected (1-0-0) (Actual 0-0-0)
- November expected result: 7-4-3, 17 points in 14 games
- Actual November results: 5-7-0, 10 points in 12 games
- October results: 6-3-0, 12 points in 9 games
- Oilers in 2022-23: 11-10-0, 22 points in 21 games
Edmonton has a real chance to take something out of November, but Florida is a good team and the Oilers sometimes stub their toes on the first game back from a road trip. If this team can win the two remaining November games, I think the story of this month will include some redemption songs.
There were rumours Yamamoto might be close, but it’ll be a little more time. McLeod is a complete surprise, coach Jay Woodcroft mentioned bumps and bruises for McLeod and Foegele but the fleet center is out. The Hamblin and Benson recalls are interesting and this opens up opportunity for Dylan Holloway. How could it work? I’d like to see McDavid and Draisaitl play center, and the wingers on the top line should be Hyman, Nuge, Puljujarvi and Holloway.
RAMBLIN’ HAMBLIN MAN
For the scouts in this organization, the James Hamblin recall has to be a moment of satisfaction. Undrafted, he did have the numbers to get attention when he was draft-eligible (he was first mentioned in this blog in 2017) and Edmonton landed him on an AHL deal. He was signed to an NHL deal at the same time as Vincent Desharnais, both could play this season.
On the day the Condors signed Hamblin, the AHL depth chart featured names like Ryan McLeod, Tyler Benson, Cooper Marody, Kirill Maksiov and Raphael Lavoie. Hamblin gets the call to the NHL because of his dogged forechecking, impressive skill and attention to detail. I hope he has a career. I had him at No. 19 on the summer top-20 prospects (here).
TONIGHT’S POSSIBLE LINEUP
Absolutely flying blind here, Woodcroft could load up the top line tonight but the Panthers have real depth and that might be costly. Here’s my best guess:
- Holloway-McDavid-Hyman
- Janmark-Draisaitl-Puljujarvi
- Foegele-Nuge-Ryan
- Benson-Hamblin-Kostin
- Nuse-Ceci
- Kulak-Barrie
- Broberg-Bouchard
- Campbell (Skinner)
The most difficult decision imo is Nuge. He’s good with LD-JP and I think that’s where he should be, but the McLeod injury throws a friggin’ in the riggin’ for Woodcroft and company. The big guns need to be the big guns tonight, no doubts.
PERSONAL NEWS
This is my wife Jo-Anne, you may have known her as Mrs. Lowetide. She passed away this week after a short and difficult battle with cancer. The type of cancer she had (Acute Myeloid Leukemia) is aggressive and it took her in a matter of weeks.
She had green eyes that sometimes looked blue, she loved lilacs and spring, she was beautiful. She smelled like fresh air, she laughed at my jokes, she had an overbite and a wonderful crooked smile. She called me on my lies and loved me (and me her) every day for 40 years. She was the first person I called about news, good or bad, and when she cried, it broke my heart. Every time.
Jo-Anne was a wonderful Mom. She had a way about her, making you feel like you matter, like you counted. Both kids mentioned that to me this week. She’d remember something you said months or years ago and quote it back to you. She could remember the smallest, most minute thing. Her recall was amazing. She loved the people in her life and passed along her wisdom with a gentle hug. Her biggest regret in passing, and she never told me but it was obvious, is that she felt there was more to do for the kids. They haven’t met their significant people yet, and she looked forward to that part of their lives and watching grandkids come along.
We miss her so much and we mourn her loss. We will cherish her memory forever.
There will be a celebration in spring, my daughter suggested it and I like the idea of Jo-Anne being celebrated with the flowers in bloom.
For those who haven’t received your books yet, this is the reason. She was packaging them and I was mailing, and then things began to take a turn in terms of health. I have them ready, there are about 20 left, and I should be done by early December. Sincere apologies for taking so long.
I will be on the air today, want to get back to work. I can’t guarantee that it will be my best show, but Dave and Matthew will carry me if things get rough. Thanks to all who interacted with her over the years, she really enjoyed the emails and conversations.
Reading your blog daily for the past decade plus has been the best part about being an Oilers fan. Wishing all the best for you and your family.
Sincere condolences on your loss. Your part of the internet is kind, sharp and warm when so much else is cold and dim. Much of that spirit is no doubt your wife’s doing. May her memory be a blessing to your family.
Dear LT,
I am sincerely saddened to hear about your loss. Your prose, wisdom, and rational observations about the Oil is something I have treasured since moving to Japan 20 years ago.
Your life stories and references to your family make this blog so unique and IMO, unparalleled on the internet.
If I can only read one thing on the web on a given day it is Lowetide. I don’t post but am one the many who stay on the sidelines to enjoy the banter of the regulars everyday.
You have created the most amazing community for Oilers fans and I sincerely thank you for everything you do for us.
Today when I read your blog I was stunned to learn of your loss and I could not help feeling that one of my best friends had lost someone special. Even though I have never met you, I feel like I know you and everyone in this community.
That’s why I was not surprised to see so many posts from nicknames I have never seen before. We are all coming out today to let you know we share in your grief, that you and your family are in our thoughts and that we appreciate the sacrifices you and Mrs. LT have made over the years to create this wonderful community.
I am not a very religious person but today I pray for Mrs. LT, may she Rest In Peace, and you and your family as you navigate this difficult time in your lives.
My condolences to you and your family Allan. Heartbreaking. We are here for you to lean on.
Allan, I’m a world away from Edmonton, so I just logged in. A little late here, but I too would like to offer my sincere condolences for your loss. I am deeply saddened to hear that your wife recently passed away. If there’s anything I can do, let me know.
Scoring from the D has been most useful these past two games.
Even prior to that goal, Tyson Barrie was having another strong game. He had a few blips early on the recent road trip but he’s been a good player for the Oilers this season.
Tyson Barrie, you magnificent bastard!
Barrie hunting down low in the slot bangs in a deflection after 5 straight minutes of pressure from the Oil since the period’s start.
Heady play to activate with Draisaitl back at the point.
They’ve been rotating in and out of high and low well as a team tonight
BOOM!!! Barrie sneaks in and buries a tip!!!
Other Barrie with the laser.
Tyson “the sniper” Barrie!!!
Whatever the result tonight the Oilers are playing better these days. They are starting to outshoot teams regularly.
Draisaitl sets up a play from Gretzky’s office lol. Almost worked too
LT: such a lovely written tribute to your wife. I’m just a lowly stranger, but I still must pass on my heartfelt condolences to you and your family.
After Two:
1-1 tie (1-0 Edmonton in the second)
25-19 Edmonton shots (11-9 Edmonton in the second)
35-30 Edmonton Corsi five-on-five (16-15 Florida in the second)

Fairly even game, Oilers are rolling four lines. Nurse and Broberg having some issues with turnovers/risky plays in their own end.
Ceci back with Nurse to start the third. Manson recognizing.
Skinner leaving some fat rebounds out there tonight
system glitched again, taking out comments.
Pretty sure it will be in the playoffs, against the Oilers.
This is in reply to “when will the gutsy ref call some poor goalie for knocking his own net off?”
You’re probably right.
Shoot. Be selfish if you have too. Not to get a shot on net is bad
I don’t think we have a single shot on an odd-man rush this entire year.
Second PP unit isn’t exactly dripping with high level talent lol. Still, created a good chance.
Well that was a brilliant zone entry
So sorry to read this LT, thinking of you and your family with a heavy heart.
Oh my God, LT. I am so sorry for you and your family’s loss. The way you weave your family into your writing makes this place feel a lot more homey, welcoming, and relatable to all of these Western Canadian (mostly) boys who read and contribute. Thank you for that and to Mrs. Lowetide for sharing you with us. My deepest condolences.
I hope you might consider letting us know of a charitable cause you both cared about, I’m sure this community will support in droves.
I can only imagine what Mike Smith’s reaction would have been to Nurse’s block attempt.
My deepest condolences Mr. Mitchell.
nurse is so dumb
that would’ve been an even bigger boost to Boosh’s confidence.
Nurse keeps lowering the bar
9 million haha drink!
less dustin for donuts, Nuge
That is an egregiously bad play by Nurse.
Man It was going wide lol
Some kinda brutal
I really loved his shot to the wide corner, in the offensive zone, with the top line out, in deep…so Florida could have an instant breakout for a 3 on 2.
Amazing hockey sense.
Darnell, that is what you call feeding the haters. Please don’t do that.
Just so typical
Let’s get this one for Jo-Anne and Allan, boys.
LT, my deepest condolences for your family’s loss.
Your stories of Mrs. LT made it feel like she was here as much as anyone else who was posting and interacting. From that, we could all see how wonderful she was.
Deepest condolences to you and your family LT. We’ll always be here, please ensure you take whatever time you need for yourself and your children.
Wow. I don’t have words to express my sympathy for what you’ve lost, but not logging in to try seems so much worse.
I’m sorry to hear the terrible news, and want you to know that I’ll be thinking of you and your family. I’m confident everyone who reads your blog or listens to your program is doing the same.
We’re with you.
I am so sorry for your loss Al. My heart has been heavy all day due to your loss of your beloved wife. I talked with my wife about what you are going through, and she was grieved for you also because of what you have shared about your beloved Mrs. Lowetide over the years. You and your family are in my prayers tonight. I can’t imagine the pain you are feeling. May your loved ones be close during these dark days.
Jamie
I’m Sorry, LT.
Extremely saddened by the news and how you’ve managed to keep on, keeping on with the blog is remarkable.
If anyone reading has a few bucks to spare, it’s a small gesture, but we can show the care for our host if everyone gives a little during what must be one of the toughest weeks.
So sorry for your loss Lowetide.
Outside of my immediate family nothing has given me as many laughs and tears over the last 10 as this blog and its author/patron saint. It truly feels like a family (crazy uncle and all). I have never cried as hard as I did this evening. My sincerest condolences to you and your family Allan. Absolutely heartbreaking.
Deepest sympathies and condolences to you and yours, LT.
So sorry to hear. My sincerest condolences, thoughts and prayers. 😢
Heartfelt condolences Allan, to you and your family.
… and the train still ran on time.
I’m sorry to read about your loss. It’s a weird …thing… we are all in and it never lasts as long as you think. But it lasts forever.
I am so very sorry to hear about Mrs. LT! I have heard so much about her over the years that I feel like I know her. I have followed her on Twitter. Her being a Riders fan made her special to me. I am very sorry for your loss.
My goodness Mr. Mitchell, to say I’m at a loss for words would be an understatement.
When I told my spouse of your loss this evening (as I read the blog) she was crestfallen. We’ve both fostered such an attachment to the Lowetide canon that hearing of your wife’s passing was a gut wrenching blow. We had a long standing personal joke that there had to be some way of enticing you both to break bread informally, finally put faces to names.
All of our condolences, well wishes, and strength of spirit for you and your family in these trying times.
I am heartbroken for you and your family, LT. I came here for the hockey and stayed because you showed us how to be a good parent and spouse. We will all carry her example and memory.
I am so sorry to hear of your loss Allan.
This place and your words here are always wonderful and your tribute above was beautiful.
My thoughts and my very best wishes are with you and your children – who sound like they got damn lucky in the parent lottery.
jon
LT. I’m shocked and saddened by the death of your wife. Sorry that you and your kids have to go through that. Life can be joyous and beautiful in one moment, then a real gut punch the next. That’s a wound that never fully heals. Please know that we are sending our collective love your way.
