The Edmonton Oilers had a disadvantage in becoming Western Canada’s most successful team. The Vancouver Canucks had a nine-year head start, the Calgary Flames were established in Atlanta and arrived with a mature roster, and the Winnipeg Jets won the final WHA championship with a strong and talented roster. Edmonton? After their first NHL game, coach Glen Sather said “Kevin (Lowe) and his partner Lee Fogolin were our two best defensemen” in identifying the real problem in Edmonton during the early years: Defense.

If Edmonton wins tonight, the team will have 40 points in 35 games, a 94-point pace. That would represent a secured playoff position, although the race would be tight. I still think Edmonton will rip off a long winning streak and put all this anxiety to bed, but until that happens it’s going to be close.
CANUCKS LORE
The “target” for the Vancouver Canucks on expansion draft day was Doug Favell. The man targeting Favell was Bud Poile, one of the architects of the brilliant Philadelphia Flyers expansion draft just three summers before the Canucks entered confederation. Poile had planned to do in Vancouver what the Flyers did in 1967, but the available talent was much poorer in 1970 (the league had been watered down and still had 6 expansion teams much inferior to the original 6).
The key for Poile, as it had been in 1967 in Philadelphia, was a good young goaltender.
The Favell deal never came about, and it was (as always) due to expansion theatrics authored by Punch Imlach (now Buffalo’s GM and Poile’s expansion opposite number). Vancouver had a deal with the Philadelphia Flyers: select LW Garnet Bailey from the Boston list and Philadelphia would send Favell over for the former Edmonton Oil King. However, Imlach used the first pick in the expansion draft to select Boston RW Tom Webster–something he had agreed not to do in a pre-draft deal with Boston GM Milt Schmidt–and Boston pulled back Bailey. This moved the “target” and changed the “face” of the original Vancouver Canucks.
OILERS FIVE-ON-FIVE PTS 60, FIVE-ON-FIVE GOAL SHARE, FIVE-ON-FIVE SP
I like this lineup plenty, the only real issues being Dylan Holloway’s placement on the fourth line (my solution: Don’t have one!) and Philip Broberg’s injury. I think the Broberg injury is the one management is most worried over, he is a key piece to the puzzle for Ken Holland.
That brings me to the subject of Jakob Chychrun and online tomfoolery. I’ve written about Edmonton’s need for a veteran top-four defenseman and mentioned Chychrun as a strong option (among others). In the past few weeks, I’ve had several exchanges that have become untenable about this player, and it’s silly.
I’ve said on Lowetide and Jamieson several times that Chychrun isn’t a target based on intel (Darren Dreger was very specific about three weeks ago, and if he’s specific, he has the goods). That isn’t my opinion on Chychrun and his worth to the Oilers, it’s my opinion on the state of the Oilers evaluation process. We should be able to have a nuanced conversation, but it becomes difficult when the argument is turned into a black and white one.
So, I’ve mostly avoided the conversation because it’s not productive. However, if you’re wondering, I think Ken Holland should trade for Chychrun, even if the price is dear. Names like Xavier Bourgault, Dylan Holloway, Philip Broberg and Reid Schaefer, plus the first-round pick in 2023, should be in the conversation. I’m not saying trade all of them, but some or most of those names won’t be contributing for some time. If it’s go time, then it’s go time. For the record, I would hold the 2023 first rounder, Holland and Broberg as being the most valuable pieces.
LOWETIDE AND JAMIESON
A busy Friday and the last show before Christmas! We’ll have Steve Lansky, a preview of the Oilers-Canucks and talk of football pro and college. 10-1260 text, @Lowetide on twitter. See you on the radio, and best of the season!
The Flames out shot the Ducks 23-1 in the second period.
and yet its still 2-2, now that, is funny.
And they hit the post multiple times.
Sutters gonna milk some utters tomorrow morning with vengeance if they lose.
He’s telling the Flames to hold on and make the playoffs.
This PK is something special
The Canuck’s?
That first goal was something a house league goalie would be ashamed to let in. Skinner gets a lot of credit and good press around town. He has worked hard and earned it.
Having said that, he is only 10-9-1 this year. He was 6-6 last year. Yet Jack Campbell, with an .872 save percentage and 4.02 GAA is 2 games above 500. Our defense may suck, our team game isn’t the best, but something isn’t quite right with Skinner.
He doesn’t seem to be able to win games at this level. He is an NHL goalie, but so far, he is a good backup, not at all a starter.
Should of started Campbell been beating the win percentage of Campbell to no avail. Dig into the numbers Skinner is as J.J Walker used to say is Dynamite for the first 2 periods. When it comes to the 3rd period Skinner is a wallflower.
Skinner in a slump?
.889
.765
.906
Brown: (paraphrasing) The Oilers give every team in the League the opportunity to win the game when they play. Every game, no matter who they are playing. That’s why every game is a close game. They regularly give opponents chances to stay in it.
If games are close how come we only have 1 looser point?
Because there are far more variables at play there? Not the least of which is winning in overtime.
I don’t think there’s any question the Oilers have been in a lot of tight games this year.
2, I think.
Because they outright lose games they should win like this one
Great assessment
Pretty sad I could name 3 players that need to be fired into the Sun. This team needs a heart transplant when is Kane returning?
Name them?
2-0
2-5
ok then. Brutal
this team has 0 bite
F group do with kane back but well he’s gone
even with, the strength is scoring not hurt
but good lord
the D group is just as unintimidating as possible
it’s not size, its not hits, its lack of pursuit and smart aggression
it really is as bad as DoD days but its glossed over by McD and Drai PP prowess; you put hall nuge ebs with this D core it would equally as bad 5v5 imo
last year, it not necessarily the new coach bump or woodys fault entirely
but the D core just isnt up to snuff
nurse is a 1D by name alone, he’s not a game controller or a QB. he effectively logs minutes. outside of that it’s a “please dont get scored on crew”.
that needs work
Not to single him out but Leon really has a penchant for trying too many low percentage passes. The team in general is too focused on making plays, instead of possession. Leads to a lot of passive play / puck watching instead of just engaging and competing.
i think they focus on quick plays because the defensemen and men over the bench are not up to snuff;
hard to say but its hard to run a possessive game without elite puck D and bouchard and barrie are great they are not that
Leon put a pass on a platter for Yam Fry a 12 year-old would of handled the the puck better Yam Fry. Woody why the hell is Holloway not in the top 6 for useless Yam Fry and J.P. 34 games into the season and they have 4 goals between them what a fuking embarrassment to the Oiler logo.
Leon is a really talented player
I feel he is also a very selfish player. He needs to be a leader, and his play through most of very many games is bad, no other word. Anyone else would get demoted or traded
His choices kill momentum and growth of the team unit because he constantly needlessly turns the puck over. Flow and line to line energies can’t build
Frequent long shifts and the slowest skating off I’ve ever seen. Moseying across basically the entire width of the rink I’ve see
Highly predictable play when he’s flat, to the office and give the puck away
Then talking to the press about the team having to be better. BS in my eyes, I don’t care about personal stats when they lose like this, it’s at the heart of the issue and cause
This is Heresy he’s playing with 2 wingers that can’t think the game fast enough.
None of what I mentioned is a wingers fault
Maybe if he didn’t constantly bury himself deep in the corner he’d have a play
Opponents often cover him too close to do anything there
Leon thinks the game on a Bobby Orr level get him 2 Savvy wingers and Bob’s your Uncle.
Speaking of ‘Heresy’….
That’s what you call ripping the fans off of hard earned money. Extremely disappointing and unfair to the people who pay to watch. This happens way too often in their own barn. Frankly it’s disgusting 🤮
🤮 🤮 🤮
Out goalied by… who ?
Maybe they could throw their sticks in a pile at centre ice and burn them in a viking pyre. Including the extra ones
Carbon fibre doesn’t burn that well :/
More mead
Remember Hyman talking about the team learning the lessons of blowing points against teams they should beat, losing games they should win…?
Yeah. Still in school.
hyman hasnt been with the oilers long
hes learning the culture just now
Why no stick salute?
Wow. Rare one-timer appearance from Jesse. Why the hell does he keep that under the wraps?
knucks played last evening and we have been resting. Pathetic
I would pay $1.15 cents to watch go to an Oiler game. The price of the concessions though.
It’s over now . Merry Christmas.
Really disappointing effort after the 1st period.
Le sigh
Cant play 2/3 of a game every two games gents.
Until the game ends Oilers are technically in the 8th playoff spot.
When NHL action returns after xmas Oilers will be out of the playoff picture.
Nuge has been poor this game. McLeod awful but gets a rusty pass
Nuge could have singlehandedly swung this game to a won – missed on two 5-alarm chances and main culprit on winning goal against.
So much for the all-star game.
To make a team with an AHL goalie and a subpar defense look good is pathetic. A piss poor effort…again.
Getting outworked by a team that played extra minutes last night.
Yes
And I don’t buy that stuff anymore anyway, after Tipp said maybe back in the day. 5 star everything
We see repeatedly our team get outplayed by ‘tired’ teams, and rarely return the favour
3 in 4 I give some slack
This was not a goalie loss. He was rarely challenged with good shots, all perimeter or fluffy crap
Drai looked like he really didnt want to cover Barrie’s pinch there. Pretty hesitant reaction
There is no other team in the league that gets a full trap like the Oilers. Literally any lead and the other team traps for as long as possible. Find a way to beat it. Crisp passes.
Can’t just pull up there Jesse, at least toss the puck into the corner
Yup
So I came in from the shop and turned the game on at the end of the 1st..
“Been a battle ever since.”
Drink!
6 and a half minutes for the 2 man team lol
Barrie hears dog whistles and Nuge goes full DoD with a crappy stick check and avoiding all contact. Probably Horvat’s easiest one this year
Boo, piss weak
They need some urgency.
Oilers don’t deserve points. Sloppy, passive and soft dzone play. Time to go play street hockey. What happened to the team that was in Dallas?
It’s beneath them to put that kind of effort 2 games in a row.
Barrie lost battle. Nuge lost battle (well, didn’t identify the need to battle).
Get that back please.
Good thing Canucks are tired. Nuge doesn’t cover his man for the tap in. Crap.
wow 👌 go
Jesse is being helpful to the point it’s unhelpful
He needs to want to score more and balance off not participating in the attack very much
Can’t score 5v5 with your ass in the D’s pocket or goalies face when the pucks behind the net. You go there when it’s the right time – timing
Unfortunately these days he’s got neither jam, nor crust.
His game has gone stale.
the heel of bread
neither worthless or wanted
but usable for a sandwich
A dad’s sandwich.
Also useful as crutons, or in a French onion soup. Just sayin’.
Gotta be creative.
Skinner has to keep them in the game .
Kostin with yet another strong shift
Foegele should have crushed him instead of looking for the puck and accomplishing nothing to stop the attack
is Van able to extend kuzmenko to a worthy offseason contract or is he available?
another high scoring F and situationally solid defensive D this team is set
aint gonna change the goalie tandem this season
In the offseason I was higher on Mikheyev for the bottom six, myself. More affordable, fast, and can PK. Fills a bigger area of need.
I (mostly) like our top-6.
yeah i mean strictly this season
kuzmenko is a sub $1m contract playing for a non playoff team up for grabs
and honestly of the opinion oilers lean into their strength
well..
they cant do anymore on the PP but their top 6 can be world killers 5v5
kuzmenko is easily fit able for like, asset wise, its highest bidder but a 2nd or 3rd
and get a 2nd LF who can defend for JP etc.
honestly id give JP for kuzmenko even if kuzmenko is 100% signing with van in offseason
fuck this dead weight
We were in on Kuzmenko, but I never heard if we were in on Mikheyev.
He was my target as a strong option for the bottom six this previous off-season, as a direct result of an old habit of mine to watch non-core players from opposing teams to see who’d be a fit on our team. Someone you could acquire cheap and see flourish. It was Lee Stempniak, who burned us with each of the dozen teams he played for, that started that ritual.
C’mon Bouch maintain structure, Jesus
Foegele doing his best Emmett Smith impression
Need an effort like the one against Dallas in the 3rd—no more goals against. Shut them down. An opportunity to break the deadlock will come.
Oilers better not give this game away.
Bare down guy’s. It’s not Christmas yet .
After Two:
2-2 tie (2-0 Vancouver in the second)
25-21 Edmonton shots (13-12 Van in the second)
32-27 Edmonton Corsi five-on-five (13-10 Edmonton in the second)
==
The game turned on a flukey goal by JT Miller and now the Oilers are in a tough game they need to win.
Oilers are playing well enough to win. So are the Canucks.
Dallas game looking like a one-off. Edmonton playing exactly like they did against the previous 3 teams.
I think they have trouble with narratives of ‘we can score’ in their heads
They had a game against a good team, a nemesis, where they played simple and direct and things went their way. Some games have flow in your direction
And they immediately revert to a soft style, low urgency, and looking for goals, cheating. And letting the other team have hope and making them look a lot better than they are.
They need to watch Bergeron tape until they can’t stand to do anything but play the details right, every shift. Goals will take care of themselves and feel just as good, or better
2-2
For scientific research;
The plain fact is Oilers can ill afford to lose any more points before the xmas break.
Must Win Game?
Yes press +
No press –
Ignore and this kind of research will be open for review.
depends on the implication of “must”
“must win” to win playoffs or a cup no
“must win” for people to like the oilers over xmas dinner
sure
One thing I like the World Cup is refs being sent home publicly for bad performances
this would be one of those games
Ryan with a nice goal but the 4th line is it’s two Ozone penalties is not gonna make the coach spread the love.
Barrie too jumpy on that last PK goal.
Seems a bit lackadaisical right now. Not quite enough urgency IMO
Itll be a better effort in the 3rd 👍
