In the most recent 10 games for each team, the Edmonton Oilers (5-3-2, 12 points) have gained significant ground on the Seattle Kraken (3-6-1, seven points). A win tonight and the road team will climb past the Kraken and Calgary Flames into third spot in the Pacific Division. These are important games for the Oilers. Expect a fun but tense 60 minutes (or more) in the city that gave us Jimi Hendrix.

- November results: 7-7-0, 14 points in 14 games
- October results: 6-3-0, 12 points in 9 games
- Oilers in 2022-23: 19-15-2, 40 points in 36 games
I have tonight and tomorrow night as victories for Edmonton. If that happens, the team will finish December 8-5-2, 18 points in 15 games. That’s spitting distance of my prediction after a solid start followed by a mid-month walkabout sponsored by chaos. It would be a great run to end the month, but there are many miles to go.
TALK OF THE TOWN
- When do the reinforcements arrive? Evander Kane is out for a few more weeks, and may not be 100 percent for a time after return. I think it would be wise to assume he’ll be in form in time for the playoffs.
- No, I mean trades. Ken Holland runs on time. Unless there’s a fantastic deal that falls in his lap, I expect a deadline rental ala Dmitri Kulikov.
- What about Philip Broberg? He’s skating and that could mean soon, but the Oilers are winning with Markus Niemelainen so there’s no rush.
- Is he any good? In the AHL, Broberg has played in 38 games, owns 6-21-27 boxcars (that’s good production) and an even-strength goal differential of 32-17 (65 percent). Those are excellent numbers in the AHL, he looks NHL-ready but injuries are poking a big hole in his season.
- Then he gets to the NHL and is trash! That’s far from true. In the Broberg games coached by Woodcroft in the NHL, the young defender has low boxcars (1-2-3) in 26 games. 11-14 five-on-five goal differential. Injury is the big frustration, but the Broberg resume, when he’s in the lineup, is encouraging.
- So Holland wants to see him play? Yes, exactly. Back when I started this blog, I used a lot of baseball references because they were familiar to me and acted as a kind of shorthand. So, I’d say ‘this young prospect needs 500 at-bats in the NHL’ which implies a full season. Broberg is at 34 NHL games now, and has some nice things.
- Like what? He’s over 50 percent (all five-on-five) in Fenwick, Corsi, shots. He’s at 95 percent PDO. If this were a free-agent signing, let’s call him Art Carney, there would be a great deal of buzz about him. However, due to where he was drafted, and the names passed over by Edmonton, there’s a biased view of the player. Human nature. Also not germane to Broberg as a possible solution. Hopefully he stays healthy.
- What’s going on with Jack Campbell? They’re changing his equipment and he’s going to come out of the bullpen for the next while. Campbell was signed by Ken Holland, who is patient. Patience is mostly good, but I saw Bob Sebra go 6-15 on a team that went 91-71 and lost the division by four games. Sometimes stubborn mule behaviour is disguised as patience. I don’t think Holland will allow Campbell to go 6-15. Either way, Jay Woodcroft is running with Stuart Skinner, that’s the wise play.
- Who starts tonight? I’d start Skinner tonight and tomorrow night. Need both games, give yourself the best chance.
- Is this a good season? I think the first 36 games have been difficult for fans because consistency has been elusive. Injuries and performances below expected levels (led by Campbell).
- Is this a good season? It’s too soon to know. The Oilers remind me a little of the Chicago Blackhawks from my youth. As fans, we argue over Chico Maki playing on the big line, wonder why the team can’t find a stronger option behind the big three on defense (Pat Stapleton, Bill White and Keith Magnuson). The bigger issue is can Tony Esposito keep going? And the trump cards are Stan Mikita and Bobby Hull. Those two gave the ‘Hawks a big advantage and that has to be accounted for in projecting the second half of this season.
- How many points will Connor McDavid score? He’ll go 76-76-152, tying Phil Esposito’s remarkable 1970-71 campaign. Unlike Esposito’s Bruins, the Oilers will win Stanley.
- Yeah, right. Edmonton needs some help on defense, someone like Carson Soucy, Nick Jensen or Jake McCabe, and that will help in a big way.
- What else? The backup goalie role has to be solved, Campbell or otherwise. I would like to see a RH center who can penalty kill added, and the rights-holder media keeps rambling on about truculence so expect Zack MacEwen or similar. My wish is for Trent Frederic or AJ Greer.
- I see you wrote about Bakersfield, anyone who can help down there? The youngsters are coming along but need more time (and more playing time). I do think Vincent Desharnais might get a recall and see some action.
LOWETIDE AND JAMIESON
A busy show as we prepare for a new year, TSN1260 10-2 today. We’ll chat Oilers, World Juniors, Pele and maybe a Kraken or two. 10-1260 text, @Lowetide on twitter. Talk soon! Happy New Year!
Kostin telling his teammates how happy he is to be their teammate…..
https://twitter.com/EdmontonOilers/status/1609078568231002114?s=20&t=-3z8FLKtAQQs14CiWFRPsA
He also. mentioned in one media avail that with the Kraken down in the game they started to get dirty which is what led to his fight. There was actually a jumping dirty hit by Tanev on McLeod that likely triggered the scrap/mele.
Biggest pluses last night:
1) 2021 Darnell Nurse showed up. He was VERY good in all ends of the ice and scored that goal as the trailer on the rush with the snap shot from the top of the circles – probably had 12 of those that season.
2) Oct-Dec 2021 Jesse Puljuarvi showed up – with the added physicality that we now see from him. THAT player is worth every penny of his $3MM. He was physical, great on puck retrieval, creating chaos, making plays and great in all three zones.
Here is hoping this becomes more the norm.
So when all forwards are healthy (Gord willing), is it going to be:
Kane-McDavid-Hyman
Nuge-Draisaitl-Yamamoto
Kostin-McLeod-Puljujarvi
Holloway-Ryan-Foegele/Janmark?
I said a few weeks ago that JP needed a goal in the worst way possible to get his confidence back.
He’s got three since and is on a mini-heater for himself. I wouldn’t move him from that top line at the moment. His to lose.
Kane Drasaitl Yamo is a nightmare if they gel together. That line will drive you nuts.
Nuge at 3C creates a Hydra. I’m not sure if Janmark will play 3 or 4 line when everyone is healthy.
McLeod at 4C isn’t ideal but you’re giving him decent wingers not plugs. He could also play wing and spot up.
Tough nut to crack, wonderful problem to have. 👍
Is that lineup though Cap compliant?
If everyone is healthy, we are back to a 21 player roster that can’t have both Janmark and Ryan on it (well, I guess, at the point, maybe we throw Jesse and Foegele in the group as the player that needs to leave there roster via waiver and assignment).
So what would you do based on how things are trending?
Worried Draisaitl will be out for an extended length of time. I would rather he heal from whatever injuries have collectively been incurred as of late (missing 7 games in 7 seasons is incredible), but the timing is not ideal, to say the least. The team did do great without him for night 1.
Hyman and RNH are both having incredible seasons. Hyman has 17 G, 23 A for 40 points in 36 games, identical to one Auston Matthews.
Great game for Klim, Kailer and Jesse. It is hard to think that forward depth would be a weakness on this team, and if you also consider the potential of Foegele, McLeod, Holloway, getting these guys some productive playing time could do wonders for scoring depth.
Tomorrow is a scheduled loss, especially with Draisaitl likely out and either a tired Skinner or Campbell tending. So it was bold of LT to predict this to be a win, but these are the Oilers, and they are like a box of chocolates…
My understanding is you don’t really heal from a high ankle sprain–if that is what he is suffering from, ie the injury from last playoffs. He is going to have tweaks for the rest of this season and maybe next too. He’s likely been playing through many such said tweaks already.
Rob Brown said on the radio last night in took him four years to feel completely healed from his and he still feels tweaks from time-to-time even today, two decades later.
McDavid being 20pts ahead of the next best in the league that isn’t on his team is hilarious, Nuge being 7 back of the podium sweep is salivating.
18 in 13
After 5 or 6 tries, the Oilers finally go +5 games over Bettman .500.
And with his game tonight Darnell Nurse with two more EV points than Cale Makar.
Useless though.
Totally useless overpaid defenseman 🤭
David said..
On the ESPN broadcast, Leah Hextall stated that Woodcroft had an opportunity at a Rhodes Scholarship but chose to play hockey.
He’s essentially a Rhodes Scholar (without the benefit of the two years at Oxford, obviously). Like holy shit. I knew he was smart and an obsessive student, at least when it comes to hockey. But that’s unbelievable.
Oilers now have the same the same number of goals as the Bruins. For.
This is a good time, with an opponent’s G sporting a 0.400 SP%, for Old Dutch to trade Campbell! Ebs and Soucy would do… #yearenddreams
that is a sweet dream
Two wins in a row and voila, third place. Let’s make it three in a row and start to reel in the Kings.
%TOI vs. elites has been the go-to proxy for QoC here for a few years now. By %TOI vs. elites, Chychrun has played 3rd pairing comp this season and last.
He also plays significant minutes overall, so it’s not a revelation that he ranks higher in total TOI vs elites (3rd) than in %TOI vs. elites (5th). I think the most accurate description of Chychrun’s usage is ‘3rd pairing comp and 1st pairing TOI’, so no, I have not revised that assessment.
You said the other day “The idea that Chychrun is sheltered is a falsehood.“. I don’t really agree with that statement, but I’ve backed off using the term sheltered because the gap between ‘sheltered’ and ‘not chosen for the most difficult minutes’ is razor thin.
Chychrun is not being chosen for the most difficult minutes among Arizona Coyotes defenders. I think it’s pretty clear that statement is true.
Hence the contrast to Nurse and others, who are playing 1st pairing minutes and also rank 1st or 2nd on their team in %TOI vs. elites.
Score state will have an effect on the TOI of defencemen like Chychrun and Gostibehere. They’re going to get fed ice time regardless of Qualcomp if the team needs goals.
Good point about them probably playing a bit more with Arizona behind so often.
I don’t think Chychrun is being actively sheltered at evens so much as others are being chosen for the difficult tasks (which kind of is six of one, half a dozen of the other).
I was also looking at Arizona Dman minutes against empty nets in recent years (when protected a lead). Chychrun hasn’t generally been a preferred option in those situations either. This in addition to him getting secondary PK time, and the low %TOI vs elites (which I think has to mean the coaches are choosing someone else to play against tough opponents an appreciable portion of the time).
That’s an interesting position to defend.
I just looked at the PuckIQ data. Gostisbehere and Chychrun now lead the team respectively in total time on ice against elites since Chychrun returned.
http://puckiq.com/woodmoney?tier=Elite&positions=d&team=ari&group_by=player_season_team&from_date=1668949200000&to_date=1672405200000
Compare that to Bouchard, he trails Barrie by 37 minutes against elites even though they’ve played the same number of games. Barrie in turn trails Ceci by 110 minutes.
http://puckiq.com/woodmoney?season=20222023&tier=Elite&positions=d&team=edm&group_by=player_season_team
I don’t think your argument holds any water.
You can’t play the most actual minutes against the elites and be playing third pair. That’s ridiculous.
If you somehow think I’m saying Chychrun is ‘playing 3rd pair’ then you should probably try reading again.
Lots to like about that game.
Love that stat the broadcast brought up….
Mcdavid has the same amount of goals in 2022 as Matthews. TO fans are probably oblivious to this.
Well according to Kostin, Woodcroft is a “smart guy”.
As per Klim, coach told them how to win and he’s a smart guy…. the best part about Klim impacting the game positively, is he gets media!
Bet you that those back side plays to Hyman on the PP was one of those things
Ryan only one shift after about the 11:20 mark of the 3rd. Guessing he’s not 100 percent.
Holloway 11:34
Hamblin. 10:33
He got smashed into the boards pretty hard. I thought he looked a bit shaken up. Hopefully it’s just to let him catch his wind.
I think Ryan had 3 shifts in the last 10 min, and his linemates 4. I’d guess there’s not much to be worried about.
Hamblin had 5 shifts during that time not 4. Point being that the missed shifts were likely due to physical reasons rather than something else.
Drai also played a shift at the end of the CGY game too…
Ryan played a 54 second shift at 16:50 then was back on the ice at 19:35 to finish off the last 25 seconds of the game.
McDavid and Hyman each only had one shift in the last 10 minutes for 18 and 47 seconds, respectively. It appears Woody was juggling the lines a bit in a 7-2 win. Holloway and Hamblin played with Jesse to finish the game, while Ryan shifted over to the right side of RNH and Janmark for his last 2 shifts.
Draisaitl was back on the ice in a 2-1 games with the Flame’s goalie pulled. This was a 7-2 blow out. Seems unlikely Ryan would be put out for his last 2 shifts if something overly concerning had occurred early.
The shift chart I’m looking at (NST) doesn’t have that shift at 16:50. They have Yams out at that time. AFAIK they use scraped NHL data.
Looking at it, it might be the 19:35 shift they’re missing. Their charts do look like they tend to drop shift markers at the end of periods and games. Which is concerning. Hopefully the numbers aren’t affected.
That was fun. Let’s just do that again tomorrow night, ok?
Ok.
Strong win
I’d start Campbell tomorrow and maybe sit Drai again if he’s borderline – let him rest
I don’t think there is any doubt that Campbell starts tomorrow.
The team will likely need a strong tending performance and its Jack’s time to deliver!
That was a very good performance without 2 of their top 5 forwards, on the road, against a divisional opponent they were tired with in the standings.
No Jack and Louie, I don’t really care about the shots in the 3rd period for the Kraken!
McDavid sitting at 16:01 TOI tonight. Couldn’t ask for a better game going into tomorrow night.
Regarding the play McDavid made on Burakovsky:
One Otter denies an Otter.
that’s otterworldly
On a twin otter plane, you might say
u guys otter know better
In otter news…
7-2 game and 97 back checks to save a goal.
McDavid tip saves a goal. Nice cherry on top of his 1-4-5 night.
72 points (and counting) in 37 games.
Incredible
I don’t get why he’s trying to stay under 2 pts/gm
…slacker
Larsson goons Bouch
I miss Larsson. What a punishing player.
We’re definitely missing the Larsson rub outs in the D boards
Seattle has a pretty rugged D.
McDavid really has something with that five hole shot. The goalie is anticipating the pass across and opens right up. What a player.
Yep. But it’s till otherworldly to be looking away selling the deke/fake/pass and then finding the 3 inch opening.
We are not worthy. I’ll miss these days.
Nice job cutting the net off by Niems there
Kostin likely plays 4 of the last 8 minutes…..
BOOM!!! You just knew Connor was gonna get into the action!
Yup
That guy, you know? he score finally
Connor!!!!
Done.
Should be obvious but excellent job to NOT use McDavid on the PK up by 4 in the 3rd period…..
Wow that’s some bs penalty calling there.
NHLOL
If you’re following the live tracker on SN check out Tanev’s mug shot
Either hilarious or concerning
SLim KLim wants to stay
The Klim Reaper likes Gordie Howe hat tricks.
I’ll take that trade-off, even better if Oleksiak goes too
And he does
and somehow they have the powerplay. WTF
Maybe we should [push for a shot on net or something?
Ya Bouch. Give him some
Nurse and Connor covering the net is an adventure
I think McDavid wants a goal. Presuming the Kraken don’t make a real game of this, he likely only gets 4-5 shifts but I think he wants one.
Good Call, OP.
Guy is effin’ Neo
quick thinking shot from JP, wow
Rewatched the last Hyman goal more than a few times. That was 100% shot/pass by Mcdavid. Watching it first time, I thought it was a Mcdavid shot. Can’t believe the hand eye/tip ability by Hyman. NHL players are so incredible. Fun stuff!
This segment about Drai, and now Connor and their attitudes feels odd.
Nurse having a great game.
Oilers skating tonight.
Yea Nurse looking like a different player tonight. One I like!!
Great game so far Oilers came out of a canon in the first. Nurse, Kostin, McDavid, Nuge and Jesse all looking great tonight. Not so much for the Niemeläinen Bouchard pair. Looks like Woody broke that pair up.
Not so much broke up as it is Niemo got sat.
Hopefully both he and Holloway see plenty of ice in the 3rd though.
After Two:
6-2 Edmonton (2-2 in the second)
25-24 Edmonton shots (16-9 Seattle in the second)
40-39 Seattle Corsi five-on-five (24-12 Seattle in the second)
==
Plenty of score effects but the Oilers played loose for periods in the second frame. Skinner is credited with just three HDSC, I’ll suggest there were a couple more there.
97 and 93 four points, Hyman scored twice and it’s such a bonus to get goals from Kostin (2) and Puljujarvi. I’m glad Nurse is having a good night so far.
The krack came out playing harder and more physical, as expected but I thought we hung with em pretty good and buried a few chances. Thought both goals were weak but Skinner was probably cold standing around the whole first period.
Let’s get Klim a hatty and close this out with solid defence.
Oilers getting spanked in the circle and it’s not helping the score effects evening shots out
