The Edmonton Oilers came out flying against the Seattle Kraken on Friday night, and put the game on ice early. It was a fun game for fans, no real concern about the outcome. Score effects impact these games, so the 38 shots by the Kraken were scored aided. It’s also true there was some loose coverage and unnecessary risk by the team, something that could bite the team as soon as tonight. Oilers need to tighten up like Archie Bell and the Drells, and right soon!

- December actual result: 7-5-2, 16 points in 14 games
- November results: 7-7-0, 14 points in 14 games
- October results: 6-3-0, 12 points in 9 games
- Oilers in 2022-23: 20-15-2, 42 points in 37 games
October was a strong month, November was a ‘survival is success’ month and December was supposed to allow the Oilers to get several games over .500, or at least Bettman 500. As it turns out, this late spurt could land Edmonton within a hair of my predicted outcome. Can the Oilers win tonight? Connor McDavid played 16 minutes all-in, so there should be some extreme sports in the tank for the best hockey player on the planet.
SUMMARY
- Zach Hyman scored twice and had an assist. Two shots, two HDSC and a giveaway. Hyman’s ability to post offense (17-23-40 in 36 games) is impressive and he contests so many pucks the mind boggles. Played just 14:48, that could be important in the game tonight.
- Connor McDavid went supernova again, going 1-4-5 on the night with three shots, two HDSC, 3 TK and a giveaway. He rocked the casbah with a brilliant back check and interruption of a primo scoring chance (Burakovsky) late when the game was no longer in danger. A giant walks among us.
- Jesse Puljujarvi scored, he now has two goals in his most recent five games. He had five shots, one HDSC, a takeaway, an effective hit and blocked a shot. JP is playing well in recent weeks, Edmonton needs him to score while Draisaitl is out.
- Mattias Janmark had an assist, shot on goal one HDSC and played well at evens and on the PK. I know many readers and commenters would prefer a younger man getting his icetime, but Janmark is a veteran who makes fewer mistakes. The kids are fine but Janmark serves a role for now.
- Ryan Nugent-Hopkins had four assists, NO shots, three takeaways and won seven of fifteen in the faceoff circle. A career year at 29 is not a normal progression, but the Nuge is more involved this season. I’ve mentioned this before, but Dave Keon said after his career was over that later on (about 1970), he spent so much time on the defensive side he neglected his offense. I think the Nuge has done that in previous seasons, but not this year. He made some gorgeous passes last night. Now at 1.85 points-60 five-on-five for the season.
- Klim Kostin scored twice and was a physical force all night long. He had two goals, four shots, two HDSC, three penalties, two penalties drawn, takeaway and a couple of hits. I’ve said before he is taking someone’s job, I think we can move that phrase to past tense. He took it. Just waiting for the other shoe to drop. His goals included a nice deke and a great tip. Wonderful trade.
- Warren Foegele had one shot, one HDSC and a couple of hits. He had his work boots on, and nothing cashed but his overall possession numbers five-on-five (59 percent Corsi, 4-0 HDSC while he was on the ice) were rock solid. A third line doesn’t necessarily score every night but has to be productive. Foegele contributed last night.
- Ryan McLeod had one shot, one takeaway but won just five of 12 in the dot. Played just shy of 15 minutes (McDavid didn’t play his usual minutes) and the five-on-five possession numbers (50 percent shot share) were solid. I know some of the comments surround his lack of offense since returning from injury, but he’s played just three games since his return. Give him time.
- Kailer Yamamoto drew an early penalty by going to front of the net with the puck, the guy has no fear at all. Had an assist, a shot, two HDSC, drew a penalty, had a takeaway, blocked a shot. Now at 1.52 points-60 five-on-fivee for the season.
- Dylan Holloway got into a fight, tiring of the hooks, slashes and cross checks. Good for him, he also drew a penalty, had a takeaway and was a general nuisance for the Kraken. He played 12:42, that’s closer to the range you want to see.
- James Hamblin had a shot on goal (it was a quick chance), won three of four faceoffs, took a couple of hits. He has zero points through his first 10 NHL games, but he’s getting closer. No J-F Jacques career start for this man.
- Derek Ryan had one good chance, was solid in the dot and won the shot share five-on-five. He was No. 7 among forwards in PK minutes, that’s a concern for his future with the team. He and Shore are getting squeezed out by younger players like Yamamoto, McLeod and Foegele.
- Darnell Nurse had his best game of the season. Offensively, he went 1-1-2 with three shots and one HDSC (I thought there were two). Nurse was 4-0 goals at five-on-five, so for the season he is 33-32, 51 percent. He played 23:40, effective on PK as well. On pace for 44 points this season, his even-strength goal differential (44-32) leads the team’s regular defensemen.
- Cody Ceci had three shots, GV and TK, blocked a couple of shots. He was in good position and moved the puck quickly and effectively. Ceci’s splits a year ago in five-on-five goal share (18-26, 41 percent through end of December 2021, then 38-36 through the end of the season) showed great improvement. He’s at 25-24 as of last night, I think the top pairing has been good despite some single events this season.
- Brett Kulak blocked four shots, had a shot on goal, and some hits. He made a fantastic play early in the game, thwarting a 10-bell chance without taking a penalty. This pairing did get caved in possession on a bend not break evening. Kulak is 24-23 goals at five-on-five this season.
- Tyson Barrie had two shots on goal, a couple of takeaways and two blocked shots. He is 27-22 (55 percent) at five-on-five goal differential and is playing the most complete game I can recall. Puck IQ has him second-pairing versus elites but delivering good possession numbers in the metric.
- Markus Niemelainen is really making progress now, this development is encouraging. He had some shots (from range), made some nice passes, blocked a couple of shots and got in lanes all night. Music! A young defenseman who arrives as an NHL player is reason to rejoice.
- Evan Bouchard turned over a puck in the seconds before Seattle’s first goal, but is making safe plays more often. He is such a talent, Oilers can’t entertain the idea of moving him. They are a talented team, but not so talented they can afford to bleed this kind of quality.
- Stuart Skinner was brilliant, stopping 36 of 38, several difficult shots included. Has a .932 SP at five-on-five, that ranks No. 5 among qualified goaltenders. In 14 of 22 starts (64 percent) he has delivered quality. If you believe in building up the middle, and I do, this guy is manna from heaven.
BAKERSFIELD
The Condors lost last night, Calgary Wranglers have more talent so the result was predictable. I think the Condors could have won a result if Justin Bailey could put the puck in the ocean, but he couldn’t do it last night. In fairness, the ocean is 138 miles away from Bakersfield. Ryan Fanti played well in net, Vincent Desharnais is such a good player at this level, and I was impressed with the work ethic. Wrote about the Condors season, and there are deployment concerns, but the Oilers have recalled a bushel and a peck from the AHL team so let’s review.
Good sticks are a big deal and are Oiler kryptonite. They are terrible with theirs mostly and should focus on it, it’s really effective
Lack of finish also bites them again. 5v5 play is critical because the PP can’t always score and in tight games it seems to be less reliable, we saw this in the playoffs as well when timely PPs couldn’t cash and save the game
After the blowout win which makes both teams look less like what they really are, it’s good they were able to play a tight game. But it was against a heavily injured team. Probably shouldn’t have been that tight
Jets have some injuries but can you really argue that they are more important pieces than Kane and Leon? Not scoring in this game was clearly luck and one of the best goalies in the world stoning them and not much else.
Jets missing not one, not two, but 7 starters tonight.
Did we play good D?
Sure. I agree, we did.
Someone called Kevin Stenlund ( career minor leaguer) played
17:35 tonight.
At least our PK didn’t give up a….oh, wait.
Its not like the Oilers weren’t missing very important pieces………. Oilers were also playing their back-up and the Jets their #1 goalie.
Exactly, Ehlers, Schmidt and Wheeler were the only key pieces missing on the Jets. I’d say Leon and Kane typically impact the game more than those 3 combined.
How do you score 7 in one night, and fail to string a pair together the next? Blame the crossbar and posts?
One of those games – they worked hard, they played with structure, they battled, they created quite a few chances but they missed some glorious chances (McDavid post and Nuge a few times), couldn’t get any breaks and, well, played an elite goalie have a great season who was on his game.
Oilers are starting to look more like a real NHL hockey team in the show up for the Finals definition.
These aren’t the Vancouver Canucks(of any era lol)
Brown thinks Klim lost his blade and contributed to the look.
Woody hasn’t talked to the doctors yet – should know more in the morning on Klim.
That would be one hell of a kick in the nuts if he’s hurt long term. He didn’t just earn a job, end stop, tonight he earned shifts down the stretch, he earned that spot on PP1 and he earned that spot with the goalie pulled.
Also, that one-timer seconds before the injury may have been labelled far side if the d-man didn’t make that hail-mary akward block – sigh
Oil 3-14-6 on NYE according to Bob.
That may just be the official end of Bison Kings time in an Oil uniform. He plays so deferential with Mcdavid and that is what happened on the Jets second goal, imo. He tried a tip pass and it went the other way. I think he was playing a strong game before that. I hope he recovers to have a great career somewhere in Eastern conference.
I think he was taken off that line after that….
I think he still played there after that but then he took that penalty….. I could be wrong.
Flames just leap frogged the Oil .
Refs miss call and WPG scores on power play. Campbell can’t make the save. A terrible Jessie turnover leads eventually to a goal. A McD post and a Yamo crossbar. Oilers played really well tonight but lost on a bad break and a couple of mistakes. Hellebuyck played well too and Jets are good with their defensive sticks. Can’t fault the boys for their effort or the coaches game plan. The worst part is that on the night Kostin solidifies his place as a middle six forward he suffers what looks like a potentially long term injury.
One hell of an effort. I thought the defence were excellent today. Lots of stops and good sticks from pretty much everyone.
What a tragedy… just as Kostin was looking great and he got his shot playing with McD… I hope that’s not a season-ender..
Watching the replay of Klims injury, it doesn’t look like an ankle or leg got twisted under him, but he did the splits pretty hard while going into the boards. The fact he skated to the bench under his own power makes me think it’s more of a burner than a tear.
(Fingers Crossed)
I’m guessing a hyperextension knee ligament injury. He’s going to be out for a bit. Hope it’s not a tear and that he’s a fast healer.
Yep no weight on one foot most likely knee, hopefully not acl or that’s it for the season.
That was a good low scoring game . Oilers played well. Jets won the special teams and goaltending.
Oil didn’t land till 3:45am this morn. Jets were sitting here waiting. Still kicked their asses other than Helly.
Well, Happy New Year everybody!
The best to you and yours in 2023.
Now you’re just bitter.
So disappointing for the team. They played their hearts out and deserved better. Hope Kostin injury not as bad as it looked. 2023 is going to be this teams year.
His team stood tall and clobbered the Jets
Campbell is useless.
He’d make a good pasta strainer, could maybe go pro even. . .
I hate the Jets even more than the Flames.
Well no I despise the Flames, with the Canucks a close second. But I hate going up against the Jets … they are the Oilers kryptonite.
The thing I notice most about the Jets is that they seem to get their sticks in our shooting/passing lanes a fair bit more than most teams. (which is just about the most frustrating thing IMO).
Oh dear that is never good
Ouch .
One of those games you will never win
And Kostin is hurt holy shit
Yam fry off the cross bar in the dying seconds to rub salt in the wound
ffs
The Jets always have ridiculous puck luck against the Oilers.
Seriously it has to end that way?!? Dammit. Dammit. Dammit.
Fuck sakes. This doesn’t look good.
And Kostin injured as the time expires
Happy fucking New Year
We hoped for the best, but it turned out like always…
expletive deleted
Klim hurt. Crap. Doesn’t look good.
Holy hell – the Oilers deserved to win that game.
And, oh shit, this looks real bad for Kostin…..
Kostin on the PP.
“Here he comes again…!”
might be Singher’s best line actually
I can’t stand Singh… in the running for worst PBP guy in the game.
literally doesn’t even call over half the action.
Yeah, big difference going from Leah Hextall in SEA to Singh tonight. Guy isn’t the worst (Shortbus in VAN says hello) but he’s not far off.
I’d bet we could list off about a dozen descriptive phrases that used to be commonplace he’s never said once. (but yea, they’ve certainly lowered the bar for PBP people recently, which makes him look better, LOL).
Nuge with yet another great look. The Jets get a stick on every fuckin shot.
Pull the goalie!
Now it’s time. Put Jesse in front
Put Jesse in the pressbox, while you try to trade this bust for a bag of pucks.
Holloway should be out there for the PP. Put him in a shooter spot.
Klim got that opportunity and I would say he earned it.
Klim gets a chance
i know right
Let’s do them!!!
Don’t pull the goalie until a minute left, if necessary
Dillon high sticked Yamamoto 3 times…and they tried to act like nothing happened. Wtf…
Do NOT pull the goalie yet!
Looked like he was high stocked three times
He’s cut
Great look by Nurse – that was a rocket pass though (needed to be).
Skinner would have won this game.
Shore serving up the New Years pizza. Not sure what Woody sees there.
Is there a chance that was the last time Devon Shore touches the puck in a game as an Oiler?
I hope so.
One can dream and yeah there’s a chance, but it’s small
no way he should be on the ice with us down a goal and 3 min left?!?!
One can hope
A couple of nice saves late by Campbell but it might not be enough
Goaltending is so important.
Yea feels like you need a great play to beat Hellebucyk and that any shot on Campbell could go in.
The go ahead goal was a tipped shot, after a soft play by Jesse in the neutral zone, when the Oilers were all over the Jets. Let’s assign the blame to the correct player.
Go rewatch it… it may have been tipped, but it barely changed directions at all.
tonight was just business as usual for Soupy… 2 GA on what, 12 shots?
Campbell on his way to being a worse signing than Koskinen. LOL
I don’t know how this can be posted – to my eye, its just plain wrong. That puck was going far side and it was tipped to go short side. It was a perfect tip that massively changed the shot.
Wild post(s).
Time to put Kostin with 97 and 18
That means he’ll Klim up the depth chart.
And there’s nothing harder than climbing depth…
😉
Klim Kostin has made like 7 good to very good puck plays in the 3rd period – he’s all over it.
Surprised at how good his hands are. You wouldn’t guess from his AHL production.
He also seems to think the offensive side of the game well
This isn’t going according to plan.
not a good period for Jesse
need a kill
13 may not see any more ice time tonight
