A hockey team has miles and miles of ebbs and flows, and it’s hard to tell what’s real and what is illusion in an NHL season. Perhaps this is the beginning of a run to Stanley, or perhaps this is the last chance Texaco for this talented group. It feels like the Oilers have found the rhythm but can they make it rhyme?

WHAT TO EXPECT IN JANUARY
- At home to: SEA, NYI, COL (Expected 1-1-1) (Actual 1-1-1)
- On the road to: LAK, ANA, SJS, VEG (Expected 3-1-0) (Actual 3-1-0)
- At home to: SEA, TBAY (Expected 0-1-1) (Actual 2-0-0)
- On the road to: VAN (Expected 1-0-0) (Actual 0-0-0)
- At home to: CBJ, CHI (Expected 2-0-0) (Actual 0-0-0)
- January expected result: 7-3-2, 16 points in 12 games
- January actual result: 6-2-1, 13 points in 9 games
- December results: 7-6-2, 16 points in 15 games
- November results: 7-7-0, 14 points in 14 games
- October results: 6-3-0, 12 points in 9 games
- Oilers in 2022-23: 26-18-3, 55 points in 47 games
A win tonight gets Edmonton 57 points in 48 games, that’s a 97-point pace and a sure playoff berth. There is illness in the locker room (reported by DNB) and James Hamblin has been recalled. That could upset a strong run, currently at five victories in a row. If things go right, Edmonton will own a 29-18-3 record at the 50 game mark. That’s 61 points and a 100-point pace. Let’s not get ahead of ourselves.
FIVE-ON-FIVE PTS-60 SINCE DECEMBER 1 (FORWARDS)
- Connor McDavid 3.24
- Klim Kostin 2.79
- Zach Hyman 2.75
- Leon Draisaitl 2.44
- Derek Ryan 2.09
- Kailer Yamamoto 2.00
- Ryan McLeod 1.98
- Ryan Nugent-Hopkins 1.90
- Warren Foegele 1.86
- Dylan Holloway 1.60
This is a nice mix of Edmonton’s elite talent, the impact wingers (Kane not on the list), but there’s a couple of youngsters (Ryan McLeod and Dylan Holloway) helping with the offense. Derek Ryan getting a push on Thursday night makes more sense when looking at this number, veteran has a two-way presence and is having a strong offensive run. That’s 10 names, and remember Kane isn’t on the list, who are productive since December 1. We don’t know who is ill, but tonight would be a good night for Kane to breakout.
FIVE-ON-FIVE GOAL SHARE SINCE DECEMBER 1 (DEFENSE)
- Philip Broberg 71.4
- Vincent Desharnais 71.4
- Tyson Barrie 58.6
- Brett Kulak 58.1
- Evan Bouchard 57.9
- Markus Niemelainen 55.6
- Darnell Nurse 54.1
- Cody Ceci 47.1
Philip Broberg has delivered consistent play and shown his gifts over the last 18 games. The numbers in Bakersfield suggested he was NHL-ready but you never know and he needed to flourish in a defensive role before adding on. I suspect Broberg-Bouchard will take on more of the chores. Vincent Desharnais is enjoying great success (just five games, but a helluva five games) and that creates options and challenges for the organization. Evan Bouchard has surged after a slow start, but really his underlying numbers were fine once he got away from Ryan Murray as his partner. This is regression.
I’d like to spend a moment on Broberg and his recent development. There are many extremely intelligent observers of this team who were most unkind in their assessment of Broberg over the last couple of years. One of the things I value about math is that it allows us to track prospects, and Broberg has been tracking like Oscar Klefbom (better in some cases) for at least two years now. However, the smart math folks say “defensemen usually spike within a year or two” and that is used as a slam down on any other verbal. It’s unfortunate. It takes away all the air in the conversation and leaves us with little to discuss. Perhaps that is the point but it’s not productive.
Here’s a crazy idea. What if Philip Broberg ends up being a productive top-four NHL defenseman for a decade? What if, despite not being Trevor Zegras, he is a productive player who helps his team win? I have no argument in the Zegras v. Broberg fight, to be honest I would have chosen Arthur Kaliyev. However, when we as a community (I’m not sure there is a community now, more like factions) argue black v. white there’s a lot of opportunity missed in these situations.
Philip Broberg is progressing but there’s a pile of smart people who have ripped him a new one daily for two years. Perhaps there’s room to acknowledge he might be able to help? Covering the bet has long since been asked and answered, let’s move on and talk about Broberg the player instead of Broberg the draft pick.
FIVE-ON-FIVE GOAL SHARE, SINCE DECEMBER 1 (CENTERS)
- Connor McDavid (9-7, 56 pct)
- Leon Draisaitl (6-5, 55 pct)
- McDavid-Draisaitl (14-13, 52 pct)
- Ryan Nugent-Hopkins (18-10, 64 pct)
- Ryan McLeod (6-4, 60 pct)
- The rest (6-5, 55 pct)
This is a hellua run, kind of a dream come true really. It’s a balanced roster, and in fact you’d expect the top end to be higher but peak five-on-five is the Nuge line. Music!
FIVE-ON-FIVE GOAL SHARE, CENTERS 2007-08
- Shawn Horcoff (31-28, 53 pct)
- Andrew Cogliano (35-30, 54 pct)
- Kyle Brodziak (21-17, 55 pct)
- Jarret Stoll (14-24, 37 pct)
- Marty Reasoner (9-17, 35 pct)
Just for fun, I thought I would take a look at the 2007-08 Oilers via the center proxy. It’s an interesting view of the state of the team (I used Andrew Cogliano over Sam Gagner because he took more faceoffs). It really shows how important Shawn Horcoff was to the team, and why dealing Kyle Brodziak was a poor decision. Jarret Stoll and Marty Reasoner would have been overwhelmed by poor wingers and tough opponents. MacT pulled 41 wins from that team. These are better days.

What a difference 10 days can make.
Oilers mini season inside a season of 8 games:
They go 1 -0 -0 after beating Vancouver. Good start.
Hunter Oilers 30 game Season inside a season Update:
Oilers win tonight now their record is after 12 games:
8 – 3 – 1
Season inside a season ends when Oilers play Boston in Boston. Biggest game of the regular season.
Oilers only play twice now before the All Star break, and are off for 9 days between games after next Saturday.
If illness is running through the room this couldn’t be a better time. A great chance for the team to practice, recover and get ready for the stretch drive.
Rob Brown: Boudreau and Horvat will end up being the lucky ones in the long run.
Anyone else watching after hours? Well said by Bure but where is he? Such a hilarious, fully Russian background sitting on a throne. Lol. Loved Gino’s joke about Bures elbow too..
Waiting for Bruce to come on…
Louie is a classy human being.
Amidst this abhorrent treatment of Boudreau by the idiot running the Canucks, consider they chose JT Miller to re-sign as leader of the team over Horvat. JT Miller who threw a temper tanturm on the bench tonight and gave the puck away on the empty netter, over the true team leader.
Never change, Dys.
Just spent the last 10mins laughing at JT Miller being dragged by Nuck fans on Twitter, most of them are coming to realization that they’re stuck with him.
A most delicious victory.
Well let’s see what a new coach will do. I expect a bump then an Eakins style flop and failure
It is expected to be Tocchet. His two head coaching stints with Tampa (2 seasons) and the Coyotes (4) did not go well. Would have missed the playoffs all 6 if not for the play-in’s in 2020 letting in 24 teams. In between he was the assistant coach for the Penguins when the won their 2 cups in 16 and 17. Maybe 3rd times the charm for him as a head coach?
My statement stands. It will fail. A lot better choices out there. It blows my mind how they come up with these decisions….
Eakins style flop? It looks more like a comb-over hair piece imho.
McDavid fastest to 40 goals since 99-00. Just crazy.
Hope they level up at the deadline so they can go streaking in the playoffs. Don’t want to waste a season like this.
Got a little dicey at the end, but glad the Oilers pulled it out.
Power forward Podkolzin and stud defender Rafferty were a handful for the Oilers tonight, but the Oilers just barely managed to keep them in check. Whew.
Calgary sucks!
Vancouver ownership and management has no clue what they’re doing. It’s both laughable and enjoyable.
What a weird situation – JT Miller just had to swallow his tongue getting asked about how the org has handled it.
Miller is part of the problem 👍
Yeah, he is the problem in my mind.
What a disrespectful clown
Nuge now 10th in league scoring and Hyman tied for 11th (pending outcome of other games tonight).
Would both be at least tied for 10th if not for the disallowed goal.
I kimd of want to nickname them
Steve and Austin- “the 10 million dollar man”
Few years even close to these levels they are going to blow doors off actual value of total contracts
Awesome News!
RNH and Hyman are both in the top ten in scoring or right on the cusp without factoring in tonight’s scores from other games.
Convoluted to be sure; but you take their stats from tonight and look at last night’s stats and they just both keep rising its incredible lmao
Yep
Largest win steak of the year so far.
Well done….
Wow what disgrace fire him and get it over with. I think this tops the Skype firing.
Not much help on out of town board, but at least we keepin pace. Seattle Colorado no 3 pts plz. LA loss helped.
Well, there was some help.
LAK loss.
MIN loss.
SEA OTL.
True the LAK, VEG, MIN and WPG loses a couple of nights ago were better though.
Everyone talking about Horvat and Kuzmenko, but what about one of my offseason targets… Mikheyev?
Guy can scoot, can PK, and won’t break the bank.
Would be a solid addition to the bottom six.
They play on a team that sucks.
Our guys are winners. No trading for losers 👌
We added Kane and Desharnais just need one more sandpaper player.
He makes $4.75M doesn’t he?
Stu out-played Martin tonight
Avs and Kraken in a shootout
Doesn’t matter, both suck.
Makar is one season away from Quinn Hughes lol
Do 2 of the Oilers competitors are in a game where 3 points get handed out.
Avs pull it out.
Skinner earned that one. I don’t think I have ever seen such an emotional response by a coach. Gotta feel for him.
Sorry Bruce, if you don’t like spending time with clowns, don’t join the circus
Six straight while these losers clap for a dude who’ll never coach in the NHL again.
There’s winners and there’s whatever the Nucks are right now hahahahahahahah
You’re acting disgraceful, I want to see the Nucks destroyed as much as the next guy but Bruce is all class. You can celebrate good people in the game even if they’re not on your team.
Nobody cried when the Oilers were getting speed bagged for decade.
Bruce cried as his GM shanked him and his team rolled over like babies.
A shitty franchise deserves none of our sympathy 🥃
More to the point why they hell would I cheer for Boudreau? Lol
His teams fucked up my day for a decade, they were part of the “what will I tell Corey?” Line of officiating!
Fuck that guy! I hope he enjoys his multimillion dollar retirement in LA lol.
I hope the tears of Canucks fans power his private jet out of the Lower mainland and lube the runway for Elias and that baby Quinn to follow lol.
I hope the tire fire he leaves behind turns into a wrenching volcano.
If I was Holland I’d purposely avoid trading players to that hellhole. I wouldn’t wanna be known as the GM that sends his players away to rot like that.
Hahahaha good night Dys! Enjoy the idea of relocation for the next eight years hahahahahahahahahaha
Yes… Fuck the Canucks..
And?
It’s called alcohol. What a shame.
Alright, win #6 is put to bed.
Worst Oilers game of the 6, but they did get it done.
4th point for Hyman, 3rd for Nuge.
Also, kudos to Bruce Boudreau.
Does that signal that we’re due for a loss, or the blip was an aberration due to emotion of the opposition?
Don’t know for sure, though I don’t think so.
It wasn’t at all a bad game, but the bar was set high (really smoked ANA and SJS, then outplayed 3 top 10 teams). Vancouver has real skill too.
What a low class outfit. I really feel for Bruce. Piss poor spineless management….
Rutherford isn’t this spineless. It’s Aquilini.
Keep clapping for a loser that’s all Canuckleheads are hahahahahahaaha
6 in a row
Third place.
That was close!
I love it when the Nuge scores.
Bruce, there it isn’t!
Whew. thank you Nuge. Never know against these damn Canucks
Miller with brutal turnover leads to an EN goal. Maybe he can go yell at himself now.
Bruce there it is.
Nuuuge??
yes
Nuge
Nuuuge!!
He made up for it
Trick to a 3-1 is just throw a guy on from the bench
Nuge hits the post on the sharp angle attempt.
2 posts this period and a disallowed goal
The next 2:00 doesn’t matter
All that matter is how much much the Canucks suck bahahhahahaha. All that matter is HH loves the Canucks and it’s worse than DoD level bad Hahahah.
Have to bury that Nuge
First star of game…the refs..again…
I’d go with Nuge myself.
Canucks hooking and holding and they call the 2 phantom calls on Foegele and Ryan.
Nurse has been a real steady Eddie in the Dzone tonight.
Nurse-Ceci had 8 shifts after Miller scored 3:26 into the 3rd.
Anyone think the only Canucks infraction all game has been too many men on the ice?
showing some battle for the first time this period
You basically have to add a 50% game management factor to every decision the refs make.
I hate this league. It’s becoming a joke.
This year has been worse than I have ever seen. Pathetically obvious.
Total BS.
Game management, exhibit 1.
Horrendous.
Don’t believe for one second that would go that way under different circumstances.
You knew Toronto was going to give Bruce the call.
What a fucking horseshit call. Awful.
BOO-URNS
