The Edmonton Oilers get to hit refresh this evening and erase memories from the weekend in Montreal. The team is home and dry, as rested as any team can be during the marathon NHL season, and the Detroit Red Wings (6-3-1 in their last 10) are a solid opponent. Edmonton is 10-3-3 since the beginning of January, and are in a good spot as long as the wins keep coming.

WHAT TO EXPECT IN FEBRUARY
- On the road to: DET, PHI, OTT, MTL (Expected 3-1-0) (Actual 2-1-1)
- At home to: DET, NYR (Expected 1-1-0) (Actual 0-0-0)
- On the road to: COL (Expected 0-0-1) (Actual 0-0-0)
- At home to: PHI (Expected 1-0-0) (Actual 0-0-0)
- On the road to: PIT, CBJ (Expected 1-0-1) (Actual 0-0-0)
- At home to: BOS (Expected 0-1-0) (Actual 0-0-0)
- February expected result: 6-3-2, 14 points in 11 games
- February actual result: 2-1-1, 5 points in four games
- January actual result: 8-2-2, 18 points in 12 games
- December results: 7-6-2, 16 points in 15 games
- November results: 7-7-0, 14 points in 14 games
- October results: 6-3-0, 12 points in 9 games
- Oilers in 2022-23: 30-19-5, 65 points in 54 games
A win tonight puts Edmonton on a 101-points trajectory and at that point we’re talking the top (or near) of the Pacific Division. Edmonton has done a nice job over the last 20 games and another 20 like the most recent run (12-5-3, 27 points) will make the last two weeks of the season a time for rest.
PROSPECTS IN DEADLINE TRADES IN PURSUIT OF STANLEY, A RETROSPECTIVE
It’s damn rare, ladies. Here’s the list, I might have missed one or two.
- Walt Poddubny played in four NHL games before being dealt to the Toronto Maple Leafs in March 1982 (Laurie Boschman coming the other way) in the early days of the franchise.
- John Blum traded to the Boston Bruins in March 1984 for Larry Melnyk. Edmonton signed Blum out of the University of Michigan in the spring of 1981.
- Martin Rucinsky was traded in March of 1992 to the Quebec Nordiques for Ron Tugnutt.
- Jani Rita (and Cory Cross) was traded to the Pittsburgh Penguins for Dick Tarnstrom in January of 2006.
- Tony Salmelainen was traded to the Chicago Blackhawks for Jaroslav Spacek, same day.
Do the Oilers have prospects with enough value for use in trade now? Yes, of course. I don’t think Philip Broberg or Dylan Holloway will be dealt, but Xavier Bourgault (who scored last night), Reid Schaefer, Raphael Lavoie (had an assist last night), Tyler Tullio (scored a dandy goal last night), Mike Kesselring and others have value. Markus Niemelainen could be in play since Vincent Desharnais is eating his lunch. The two quality Russian prospects (Maxim Berezkin, Nikita Yevseyev) could be of interest.
DEADLINE
Ken Holland should pursue Erik Karlsson to the ends of the earth. If that doesn’t work, checking down to Jakob Chychrun or Jake McCabe works for me. A RH center who can help out on the penalty kill would be good and increasingly I believe a scoring right-winger with scoring ability is a strong need. So, it’s 1. RHD; 2. RW; 3. RHC. Here is the addition and the list in total.
- RD Erik Karlsson, San Jose Sharks. Karlsson is the only available name I see who could have a major impact in an area of weakness. He’s a sublime player with the puck on his stick, and when he’s on the ice the puck is 200 miles from danger. One of the things we do as fans is project players into a role and then get stubborn on anything that runs counter to our own bias. Karlsson is an impact possession player, he has a 53 percent shot share, a 55 percent goal share and a 57 percent expected goal share on a poor team. If you can buy into the idea that not playing defense because the puck isn’t in a dangerous area is a net positive, then the logic and reason of Karlsson comes into view. His relative possession stats are real real gone, too. I’m beyond pumped at the idea, even as I wonder how in the hell Holland could get this done. One thing I will say: There’s an analytics feel to this idea. Go Brad Holland! Helluva turn, boys. Music!
- LD Jakob Chychrun, Arizona Coyotes. I’d do it unless the ask includes Philip Broberg. If it’s the first-round pick in 2023, plus say Xavier Bourgault, I’d do it. Lots of chatter Chychrun is heading to Boston or the Kings, both destinations make sense.
- LD Jake McCabe, Chicago Blackhawks. He’s available, under control, doesn’t cost the moon and can help the Oilers. If the Oilers are going deep, eight blue will see action plenty through the postseason. McCabe is a strong option.
- RW Brock Boeser, Vancouver Canucks. I know he’s expensive, but Vancouver might retain and Boeser with one of the skilled centers could spike in a quick hurry. The top two lines could roar with the addition of this player.
- RW Ivan Barbashev, St. Louis Blues. He can play RW and the Oilers need some help there now. Skilled, versatile, playing some of the best hockey of his career.
- RC Nick Bjugstad, Arizona Coyotes. He’s not the first guy I’d deal for on this list, but in some ways he is the best fit for Edmonton.
- LC Lars Eller, Washington Capitals. The veteran isn’t going to deliver as much offensively as he has in the past, but he’s a smart two-way pivot who has utility.
- RW Taylor Raddysh, Chicago Blackhawks. Edmonton’s RW depth chart with everyone healthy is Hyman, Yamamoto, Kostin, Ryan, with Jesse Puljujarvi waived and traded or in the minors. The injury worry surrounding Yamamoto is enough to motivate Ken Holland to add a useful player. I think Raddysh gives the team a few things and he’s scored well in his first big NHL chance. No one but me pays attention to rel numbers anymore, but Raddysh has good ones five-on-five.
Oilers (and everyone else?) apparently back out on Chychrun.
Karlsson, P.Kane and others mentioned as well.

Karlsson on the ice for overtime gets us an additional 3-5 wins a season alone.
Imagine Broberg’s development curve spike playing with Karlsson half the season for the next 4 years?
Karlsson is 3-3 goals at 3 on 3 this season – I understand he’d be with “better players” for his OT shifts but I don’t think this first statement is necessarily true.
Be all positive if you want…but the oilers have only won 3 of their last 7 (or 2 of 5 after the break) against the softest spot on their schedule.
That shouldn’t be considered acceptable for a team with cup aspirations.
Leon sucks on shoot outs.
Shouldn’t have gone to a shootout
One crazy save in the 3rd notwithstanding, Jack Campbell attempted to turn what should have been a blowout win in to a loss – kudos to the boys for getting a point.
PK back to struggling – that’s a problem.
They missed Desharnais.
They missed Smith😉
Everyone keeps saying should of been a blowout win when Husso was dialed in. Is 4-1 a blowout to folks? Oilers definitely controlled play which resulted in alot of undynamic shots. Blowout wins need alot of finishing involved, they didn’t bring it.
4 goals should be more than enough😉
4 goals isn’t a blowout, it’s a nice game.
It should be more then enough, they should of had more going into the 3rd. They shouldn’t of been chasing the score all game, it’s not one player.
Tips and open players make all goalies look foolish regardless of the score effect on the shot clock.
Right 😉 3 of the 4 goals are on one player. I’ll let you figure out who that was.
Huh?
Nah man check it out they sorta whooped their asses until Jack was called upon lol.

Some will say that’s the best game since all star break, others will say that was as ugly as Montreal. It’s probably somewhere in the middle..
Was definitely more then just the goalie, 2 goals after 2 periods against a team you just beat 5-2. Not mature at all, their opponents were the mature group.
Oilers had no credited shots on goal when Larkin scored at 4:17 in the first as the road team took the lead..
The mature group that blew multiple two goal leads while getting outshot 37-12 after they went up 2-0?
Might want to pick a better game to be a contrarian.
Tough night for Jack and nothing more.
Think I’d rather see Barrie or Bouchard with the Ferraris in OT
Nurs flubs alot of pucks
Drai shouldn’t of even played tonight, opposition is only going to get better.
Huh?
Did you watch the game or just teeing off in all directions today?
Easily Drai’s best game in weeks. He was great tonight. Kane is still getting up to par but that line was just grand overall.
Jack Campbell didn’t play great, but two of the goals bounce off Broberg, and another point blank look on a power play.
The Maatta goal was bad but why is Maatta so wide open there? Shouldn’t there be some pressure on him? It’s a clean win by Larkin and a perfect shot. They go in sometimes.
He makes a massive save in the third on the 2 on 1 to preserve the point and the poke check in OT. He gave them a chance to win they just couldn’t get the last one.
I thought the team played great, some bad luck cost them the extra point but they were the dominant, better team in that game, especially in the 3rd.
Shootouts and OT are a coin flip in my opinion; and I never put much weight on the result of them. This is a comeback point for the Oilers. Take it and win the next one.
“Some bad luck cost them the point”. Do you mean the bad luck that let in 4 goals on 14 shots? 😃
Yah I really think some of it is just bad luck on Campbell tonight. He could have played better, but I also thought the oilers were unlucky not to find a goal through the back half of the third. They absolutely crushed Detroit in that section of the game and scored no goals.
The 2nd goal hit broberg sure. If campbell hugs the post properly, it wouldn’t have gone regardless.
Goal 3 is off Broberg too, that shot was going wide. Bertuzzi might have had a shot at it too.
I don’t like any of goals 2-4 but I can also logically see how they went in.
Inthink it’s a bit of bad luck because it usually doesn’t happen twice in one game.
First 2 goals were pretty ugly and I didn’t like the 4th one either.
Campbell has to be better. Oilers deserved the win.
“Such a nice guy”. I prefer a prick with some swagger. Miss you Mike😊
Jack pulls a groin, stone colds music hits…
Looks like we’re back to inconsistent Goaltending. Maybe Kenny should check that isle out.
Do Campbell’s shoulder pads look smaller than most?
Campbell wears the L. Holland may want to pick up a goalie lol. Embarrassing!
That was savable.
Terrible game from Jack.
All the fancies are over 75% in favor of the Oilers and they lost 5-4…
That’s a Jacob Markstrom level of self-sabotage.
Ok I’m done now. Jack will feel shame but he’ll be better.
The team was flat out dominant. Got a point, tuned the offensive sites, now let’s hope one of our goalies shows up against the Rangers.
Seven game point streak on home ice to maintain.
I Hate shoot outs. There is no way the wings deserved that win.
I agree. Bolts lost against the Coyotes today 1-0 in the SO as well. Shots 47-26 Bolts.
Remember being told I’m crazy for liking Husso last year lol
Campbell sucked today. Couple good saves in the 3rd…but trash in the shootout and trash the rest of the way.
damn….2nd best goalie cost us a point tonight
Don’t take SO attempts on the backhand.
So many good players. So many easy saves.
Winner on a backhand
Because campbell bit too easy.
After how many misses by elite talent??
It is almost always the wrong choice.
Oilers need to practice shootouts…
The literal perfect shot by McDavid!
I hate shoot outs.
Been a hell of a game, wow.
Drai really appears to be labouring
Wonderful plays by Nuge there.
Any idea why Kane doesn’t ever play in OT?
And he appears.
Well that was a heartening effort. Soup redeems himself sorta. Part of the solution now.
Point harvesting is the goal.
Most dominant game in a few weeks by far. Good job guys, good job.
Boy if we had EK on with 29 and 97 in OT …
shots 43-21 and we’re going to OT
I like our chances
Husso again (and again)
He really has been fantastic
high stick on Hyman and a late PP for the Oilers…booyah
What a save Jack
OK – as poor as Campbell has been tonight, that save was fantastic (and a game saver)
That was a 12-bell save. Jesus.
Kane knew that was Seider 🙂
Hmmm two casual observations
Ive counted four grade D shots from Kulak that led to immediate whistles deep into an o zone sortie. He’s been looking for these shots and opportunities. He needs to think distribution more than trigger man IMO
Kostin has stopped deferring again. Welcome sign. McLeod is oh so damn close to becoming his own first option. He’ll get there, it’s coming.
Agreed, Kulak is not an ideal shot taker on a team with McD, Drai, Kane, Nuge, Bouch, etc.
It’s a catch 22. You want him to push and to create. But it’s a pick and choose thing. Needs to be more strategic. He fired one into a group from the half wall. It got scooped but was a fine play with the traffic.
Three have been lob shots from the point with one or less Oilers within 7 feet of the net. When you have full possession that play is worse than a giveaway.
Kostin trying out for the local diving team…that was shameless.
Mmm
Mature team picks up when a key cog is having an off night.
Coming in waves now.
Best game post All Star break by far
Derek Ryan is a weapon
Damn, and some depth scoring from Ryan and Kostin to even it up. Huge goal!
Ryan with the long distance tip on a Kostin shot!!!
4-4
Well fuck me. Didn’t see this coming…
Dr. Drai with the scalpel shot!
Nuge with his 3rd point
Really glad to see Dr. Drai score from his office!
Husso has been there when DET needed a stop
Damn
*edit-except that time…Drai!!
Please, don’t stop.
Interesting that Kulak-Barrie are the defensive caddies for the McDavid line tonight.
no goalie change
bold
Time for some Stew in the third.
Cue Gene’s recipe for Leek(y) Soup
Gage and Stauffer unloading on Soup.
Completely deserved.
Soup is the only reason this isn’t a blowout.
Regression has occurred.
Soup can be part of the solution here…
Yup that’ll do
Joaquin Gage telling it as it is. Stop the darn pucks! Such an ugly night for Jack. Gene in full damage control trying to pad Joaquin and Bob from critiquing Jack too much lol
