Game Four 2023 Playoffs: Oilers at Kings

by Lowetide

Al Arbour was a great coach, led the New York Islanders from rock bottom to four Stanleys in a row as part of a brilliant tandem with general manager Bill Torrey. Arbour said a lot of smart things, among them “there is a hump you have to get over, and it usually comes in the first series. You get over the hump and you’re on a roll.” Edmonton Oilers, meet hump.

THE ATHLETIC!

A BLAST

Yesterday, I spent four hours at Transit Smokehouse and BBQ, eating great food (it is outstanding) and enjoying the company of fellow authors Bob Layton and Shane Blakely. All three of us were delighted to have so many stop by, and I have to say it was a very enjoyable experience. I was touched by so many of you who extended your condolences about Jo-Anne, and how many of you took time to tell me how much you enjoyed Lowetide and Jamieson, the work at The Athletic and this blog. You all made an old guy feel damn good about himself. I want to thank Bob and Shane for including me in the project and will tell you there are plans to do another in the months to come. In the mean time, if you get a chance to hit Transit Smokehouse, make sure you do. I had the sliders and cole slaw and was so blown away by how tasty it was (try the Alberta sauce on the sliders, so good) I may have forgotten I was eating in public. It might have been a bad visual for Lowetide!

CALL AND RESPONSE

In 1972, the New York Islanders went to the expansion draft and picked Billy Smith and a whole lot of nothing else. However, general manager Bill Torrey and his scouting director Jim Devellano built the team brick by brick through the entry draft and hiring brilliant coach Al Arbour. The six-year cluster that began in 1972 delivered enormous talent to the team.

  • 1972: Billy Harris (897), Bob Nystrom (900), Garry Howatt (720), Lorne Henning (543)
  • 1973: Denis Potvin (1060), Dave Lewis (1008), Andre St. Laurent (644), Bob Lorimer (529)
  • 1974: Bryan Trottier (1279), Clark Gillies (958), Stefan Persson (622), Dave Langevin (513)
  • 1975: Pat Price (726)
  • 1976: Ken Morrow (550)
  • 1977: Mike Bossy (752), John Tonelli (1028)

This is an exceptional run, even considering New York was drafting high in the first three seasons. Still, Bossy at No. 15 overall is an all-time steal. The team improved quickly. In 1972-73 the club went 12-60-6, but would post a 42-21-17 record just three years later. The Islanders missed the playoffs in the first two seasons, and then became a legit Stanley Cup contender. Here are the first 10 playoff runs for the Islanders. Remember, they were good by 1975 spring, and absolutely a strong contender for the Stanley by 1976.

  • 1975: Beat the Rangers (massive story); beat the Penguins (lost three, then won four, first time since 1942), lost to the Flyers in the semi-finals (lost three, won three, then lost G7).
  • 1976: Beat the Canucks, beat the Sabres, lost 4-1 to the Montreal Canadiens in the semifinals.
  • 1977: Bear the ‘Hawks, beat the Sabres, lost 4-2 to the Montreal Canadiens in the semifinals.
  • 1978: Lost to the Maple Leafs 4-3, the most crushing defeat in this run iirc
  • 1979: Beat the ‘Hawks, lost to the Rangers 4-3 in another devastating loss.
  • 1980: Won Stanley Cup
  • 1981: Won Stanley Cup
  • 1982: Won Stanley Cup
  • 1983: Won Stanley Cup
  • 1984: Beat the Rangers, beat the Capitals, beat the Canadiens, lost 4-1 to the Edmonton Oilers in the finals.

In that period leading up to the first Stanley, the Islanders were viewed as the team that couldn’t get over the hump. Losing to the Maple Leafs was the nadir, losing to the Rangers in 1979 (Islanders had so much talent that season) could have ripped the team apart.

What did Torrey do? He kept Devellano, kept Arbour, moved some pieces (famously the trade of Harris and Lewis for Butch Goring at the 1980 deadline) and finally won it all. Then did it three more times just to prove the point.

THE CURRENT OILERS

This Edmonton team is having a tough time with the Los Angeles Kings, and I think fans are having the same difficulty. It’s easy to blame the goaltender (you should not) or the officials (they have been a factor but Edmonton has shown a lack of discipline) or the top-end talent (you would be wrongheaded to blame them, honestly) but the Kings are a tough out for the Oilers.

It’s possible the Oilers will not win this series. The following paragraphs are me preparing you for something that might happen, although it’s still my belief Edmonton has more than enough to overcome the Kings.

Why do these things happen? Peter Chiarelli once said “the margins are so small” when comparing two teams like these. It took one forever to overtake LA in the standings, and Todd McLellan has a gameplan that is working up until now. We’re about halfway through the series, and the five-on-five numbers are telling. Here are the centers, and goal shares, using them as proxy for each line.

  • Connor McDavid 0-2
  • Leon Draisaitl: 4-1
  • 97 and 29: 0-1
  • Nick Bjugstad 0-0
  • Ryan McLeod 0-0
  • The rest 0-0

I will never bet against Connor McDavid in a hockey game. I believe Jay Woodcroft is smarter than Todd McLellan. I know this Oilers team is better than the Kings. I know the Oilers are playing the Kings game. I know the Oilers lack discipline. I know intercepted passes meant for Oilers will result in odd man rushes. I know the Kings will get penalties called on borderline plays.

I believe whoever wins tonight will take the series. I have been running this blog for 20 years, watching the Oilers for over 50 and watching hockey for as long as I can remember. I wish I could tell you the Oilers will win tonight, but can only tell you that they should and they can.

I expect Jay Woodcroft will do something innovative, expect that if the Oilers get up 2-0 again all hands will try their best to stay out of the box and to have their heads on a swivel. The Islanders were devastated in consecutive springs against Toronto and then the Rangers, before plowing the hockey world for damn near half a decade.

Keep the faith. Cheer like mad. Know that a loss means some trolls will talk about McDavid wanting out, and some will rage over what might have been with a stronger procurement record 2015+. Know that tomorrow, while not what you hoped, we may speak of other things.

The Trade Guy

Great day of hockey for me. First the Blades down 3-0 claw all the way back to force a Game 7 on the Rebels and then they Oilers come back and hopefully take control of their series.

Ryan

From the toi data, it looks like Connor McDavid is the Oilers #1 defenseman.

29:49 all states.

Next was Bouch and Draisaitl at 27:43.

I’m confused. Did Bouch play on the top pairing with McDavid or Draisaitl?

Admiral Ackbar

A few Oilers saw very little ice time tonight. They rolled 3 lines

kgo

The refs obviously reviewed the tape…Ardvisdsson was not drawing any calls tonight.

thelongdark

And not for lack of trying.

Scungilli Slushy

I don’t know what it is about sports and how certain things come back to haunt you, but the clip of Doughty basically trash talking the Oilers pre game about being called an offensive power, and saying the Kings are as good essentially, that never seems to end well

They’re a good team with an interesting balance. They are also having trouble with a team that only has about 25% of the players showing up each game

Glad he did

hunter1909

I cannot bring myself to hate anything about the LA Kings. They’re playing Oilers tough and it’s still close enough to guarantee a 7th game. Who in their right mind wants to play that game 7 in California!??

Local St Albert and original Braeside boy Ed Joyal played for the Kings, back in the day when Pacific results only got published in early/late editions. .

Eddie used to like to go to The Bruin Inn during offseasons; preumably with another Braeside boy Mark Messier taking notes.

You like the Kings?

That’s just gross.

Get yer dick straight.

My Goodness Nurse is at the wrong end of most of the goals tonight.

LMHF#1

The coaches had better be on this.

Finding a way for him to be at least serviceable is an absolute must to get anywhere. Even with Kulak stepping up.

hunter1909

He likes to play a dramatic style, yes.

: p

AMD

He’s not a first pairing D-man.

Walter Gretzkys Neighbour

LT – I do hear you when you caution about handing out blame. But MY GOODNESS #25 looked very poor on at least two goals – like VERY poor….

While I do not mean to single him out it really does look like cringy! Several feet away gliding back on one goal, very weak positioning on another.

I hope he watches the video and makes a hard decision about his play. He is absolutely key to moving on. Play like this could very well be the dealbreaker for this series.

Bag of Pucks

They really shuffled the deck on D tonight. Broberg up. Desharnais down. Nurse and Ceci separated often. Will be interesting to see what they settle on for Tuesday. D definitely needs to be better. Kings really attacking Bouchard and Deharnais’ flank with speed and Nurse on the backdoor.

Forwards are waking up. Hopefully the D follow suit.

em

Wonder what the D minutes will look like next game. The Desharnais addition filled a big need for the team but it’s too bad that it came at the expense of Broberg, who seemed to be emerging. With both Desharnais and Nurse playing poorly and the Oilers presumably going 11-7 for the rest of the series with Janmark out, maybe we see a more even distribution of minutes among the 7 defencemen– give Broberg an additional 5-6 minutes a night and lighten the load on Vinny and Nurse. Broberg did very well in about ten minutes of ice time tonight (71% expected goals)

As some others have pointed out, Kulak also did very well tonight. Would be in favour of reallocated a few of those minutes his way as well. Thought he was lights-out in the playoffs last year and would love to see him recapture that.

I think Kulak Bro would do just fine. Their mobility would rival some of those legendary Avs tandems

hunter1909

Whatever you say LAK are doing with Bouchard I hope they keep it going.

Scungilli Slushy

I don’t know that they will use Bro much now but he is a significant talent. His skating, man

I think he’s already better than Des and he’ll pass Ceci next season if he stays healthy. Can’t wait

SoCaloil

Idk now you ice 73 after tonight’s performance
the guy doesn’t have NHL caliber skating ability. Sorry to say

hunter1909

Big step toward my dream finals vs Taylor Hall and his Bostonians.

note: Oilers go up 1-0 in that series with a blowout.

hunter1909

Ha ha ha ha ha

Calgary Puck says Oilers can’t be contenders because they’ve been having a hard series against the LA Kings.

jp

That’s funny. Short memories apparently.

frjohnk

Every team that wins Stanley goes thru some adversity during the playoffs.

overcoming that adversity is what makes them champions.

best of 3 now.

oilers have home ice advantage

lets go

LMHF#1

Many teams rip through the playoffs, especially the early rounds.

We want to see 87-88 Oilers stuff.

Scungilli Slushy

From LTs write up today Arbour said it was often the first round

Get it done fellas and let her ride

Paulie

Kings have to be crushed after that. Korp armor shattered., Blew big lead than late lead. DD looks exposed.

LMHF#1

Part of the Kings strength is they’re playing with house money at this point.

No one expected big things from them this year. This is all gravy.

Yukon Jerk

That & Korpisalo has been unreal in this series.
Chances are he bounces back as most goalies do after a tough night.
That & Fuck off L.A.

LMHF#1

I don’t give Joonas as much credit as a lot are. He’s been very good – but only because the Oilers have insisted on shooting low. He’s got that completely locked off. Credit to him.

He’s not very good up high.

Chelios is a Dinosaur

Is this what the hump feels like??

Fuhrious

Close, except this time Hyman broke it open, instead of the other way around.

saddleblazer

Hyman’s shortie against Calgary in game 2 last year flipped the series.

Tonight’s 6-hole snipe has done the same.

McSorley33

Bieksa on the post game….Oilers needed Hyman and Kane to step up.

cowboy bill

That shot by Hyman deflected up off
Doughty’s stick.

Reja

Yes it did Doughty had a rough game he tried diving on the Leon Goal to no avail. The Kings tried flopping 4 or 5 times maybe the Refs are onto them.

SK Oiler Fan

Have to think there was some leage/official discussion on this yesterday.
Officials took alot of heat this weekend

Bling

One of my favourite things about Hyman is how often he looks off Draisaitl and McDavid.

On the winner, he looked off both!

Admiral Ackbar

I missed most of this game because I’m an emotional banshee.

What a pass by Bouchard to Zach.

What a gutsy performance to come back from 0-3. To tie it up with 3 to go. To have Campbell pull out the stops.

They really played the kings a lot softer tonight and lost a tonne of puck battles (save Kane giving it to Roy in OT). Kings nearly run them over the half-game I saw. Yikes. Was that the ManWood game plan? To play more open? My heart just ran 10k.

dangilitis

Was thinking the next PP was going to LA so they’d have to ice it beforehand. The PP is obviously not just a big opportunity to score, but it wears down the opposing 4 man unit. No coincidence that this was the best reffed game of the series.

oil_drum

How can you not be romantic about hockey?

This series is special now and will be special twenty years from now. It’s the kind where dollars associated with contracts are forgotten, and every penny becomes worth it. Names big and small will be remembered for their once-in-a-lifetime heroics. All is forgiven but tonight won’t fade quickly into the past.

hunter1909

Thank you.

McSorley33

Jack Campbell…..well done

hunter1909

Campbell played very well the last time he was in goal during the regular season.

That went into OT also I think lol he’s a special situations genius!

Reja

It’s nice Hyman and Kane decided to join the series

dangilitis

They were always there, just lacking confidence to shoot. Full credit to Korpisalo for getting in their heads, hopefully that ends tonight. Both goals were high shots off the rush, not the perfect chances but the best options afforded. Now we just need some Nuge action and Foegele deserves to cash one too!

MushedPeas

Kane especially has been in it. Hyman I thought was unlucky to now. And maybe not having the best time of it.

Ice Sage

he’s streaky – betting he pops a few more this series

hunter1909

They’re both top players.

What do they always say about playoff hockey?

The best players eventually turn up.

MushedPeas

Let’s all collectively appreciate Bouchard’s impact on that game.

McSorley33

Bouchard and Leon have sore shoulders

godot10

He owed us one.

hunter1909

Top ten defender in playoff scoring right now, or close to it.

Scungilli Slushy

Was probably the best player overall and throughout the game

That OT winner pass was cherry. Barrie is a superb fellow but he’s not in Bouch’s postal code

Derek

That Campbell toe save on Arvidsson on the breakaway saved their season. What a relief appearance by Jack.

LMHF#1

All goals on high shots.

STOP SHOOTING LOW!!

Light this clown up.

SK Oiler Fan

Almost all goals have been top third of net on Korps

Bouchard + McDavid both look like rocketing into the top 10 of playoff scoring.

Trifecta. 3 points each for Connor, Drai and Booch.

Ek Comb

Never say never example one million

For anyone who said a win for Campbell would never be part of this cup run.

#EveryGoalerMatters.

Freaky 4 games. Best of 3 now. Like this groups chances.

Diablo

Woot woot. I watched the game in parts tonight, while sitting at the children’s hospital cause my kiddo is sick with another respiratory daycare virus. Missed the first period, which was probably a blessing of sorts. Surrounded by mothers with other tiny kiddos and my own, all of us trying to get to get them to sleep. I celebrated with a quiet but satisfied fist pump. Go Oilers.

Admiral Ackbar

Oh my. Be strong papa. Sorry you gotta be there. Hope the little one feels better soon.

hunter1909

I remember being terrified of hospitals as a child. Hopefully your tot gets well soon.

smellyglove

Hoping you and your family as well. Children’s hospitals… Man. Let’s you reflect on what is really important in life. Enjoy the win and hope you’re out soon.

Diablo

Lol – no worries guys. I’m a staff physician on the adult side of the hospital. She’s super stuffy, so I needed a stronger aspirator to suck out all the snot … that part was admittedly stressful cause she really didn’t enjoy it. We’re giving her nebulizers to open up the airways cause she was really wheezy this afternoon and puffers weren’t cutting it. Chest x-ray is clear, so all good. Going to monitor her for a little while longer but I think we’ll be able to bring her back home tonight.

kgo

You’re a physician so you obviously know better than I do, but I just plug one nostril, pucker up and suck the snot right out of the other side…my kids call me doctor daddy.

Scungilli Slushy

That is savage lol

Diablo

Yep – that’s the old school way to do it. Problem is I’d almost certainly get infected. I work primarily with seniors so I’d be risking their health in clinic next week.

I was behind the Stars bench for the 4-3 overtime comeback win in 97, I believe. And highest row for the 3-2 triple overtime win over SJ in 06. I have to say, this comeback win was gutsier

Munny 2.0

Campbell flipping the script on his season by saving the team’s playoff bacon is such a typical Oil story

hunter1909

lol yes!

cowboy bill

The nice thing is they let the teams decide it .

Easily that is the biggest goal I’ve ever seen scored this century.

what a cake walk

shocked the skinner pull paid off, almost like the oilers needed more chaos in net to play better lol

I am speechless .. and exhausted and a nervous wreck. Just amazing game.
