The Oilers are through 10 games and are starting to find answers. Coach Kris Knoblauch’s circle of trust is a small population, they could safely sit inside a four-door sedan. That has to change, but there does appear to be a path forward emerging through the fog of early-season uncertainty.

Mammoth are a young, fun team that is also on a roll. This is going to be a real test for the home side tonight.
I’m always interested in seeing trends, even though we are not close to the 200 minutes at five-on-five the smart math people tell me is the beginning of trust in numbers. I wrote about Vasily Podkolzin today at The Athletic, he was a player I identified as being a possible offensive spike for 2025-26. I predicted a slight increase (from .29 to .33 pts-game) in my reasonable expectations artice from mid-August. He is currently 1-4-5 in 10 games, which is a nice start but a small sample.
As you know, and for some of you this has no value, I believe five-on-five points-60 is the best way to value offensive output. It’s as close as we can get to a level playing field, and that’s what I’m looking for in these numbers. All of the power-play kids are known offensive movers. Who is helping at five-on-five, which is the equivalent of scoring on the NHL’s mean streets?
- Noah Philp 2.68
- Vasily Podkolzin 2.23
- Kasperi Kapanen 1.69
- Jack Roslovic 1.54
- Leon Draisaitl 1.5
- Ryan Nugent-Hopkins 1.44
- Adam Henrique 1.07
- Connor McDavid 1.06
- Andrew Mangiapane 0.92
- David Tomasek 0.74
- Ike Howard 0.69
- Trent Frederic 0.49
- Matt Savoie 0.00
This is 10 games, but I do think Podkolzin is an early story worth discussing. Noah Philp should be playing every game (in my opinion) but Curtis Lazar has a 2.68 goals-60 at five-on-five (I didn’t list him because it’s just two games) so there’s a case to be made there. I’d run Philp.
The other takeaway is that regression is going to hit the Glimmer Twins like the riff on the Stones’ Bitch and take both to soaring heights soon. Real soon.
I have seen some comments about McDavid eroding as an offensive player, I’m sure that’s true (both big men are approaching 30) but this current level of production is either exhaustion, injury, bad luck or the upset of line shuffling. It can’t be a cliff this great because we have 100 years of hockey history to tell us McDavid doesn’t have a cliff yet. I wrote about the two men and the next decade here, ending the piece with “the class of the next decade starts with McDavid. The numbers suggest he will ease into his 30s with remarkable grace. The great news is that Draisaitl won’t be far behind.”
These cats are all-time greats and have many years of incredible offense ahead of them. Don’t let anyone tell you different. The need to be wise online is the cocaine of the masses and leads even brilliant people to the dumbest damned conclusions. Let history be your guide.
On the Lowdown today, Daniel Nugent-Bowman at The Athletic will be our feature guest, and we’ll talk about his recent article addressing Oilers roster questions. We’ll also talk about an epic World Series game that ended about five minutes ago. Sports 1440 and You Tube, noon to 2pm.

Is Edmonton Oilers winger Vasily Podkolzin finding another gear?
https://www.nytimes.com/athletic/6751454/2025/10/28/edmonton-oilers-vasily-podkolzin-stats-leon-draisaitl/
It might be interesting to flank Drai with Podz and Philp for a couple of games. I know Philp is usually a C but bear with me here. Each of them seems to cover a lot of ice and the trio could be a real load to play against.
Im sure glad we didn’t waste a fourth round pick and take a chance on someone like Arturs Silovs.
Summarizing!
Lewandowski was denied the gift of soup, and so shall have to subsist on kohlrabi instead.
Love Kohlrabi!!!
I discovered it in the Nippon Lounge in Tokyo and crushed Kohlrabi for years – in particular this spiralled Kohlrabi they had – I would eat it on my salads, like 2-3 bags a day.
Delicious essentially non-calories.
It was discontinued about a year ago and I’m still not over it.
Walman has 5 pts in 5 G, only one on the PP (and it was an OT GWG).
And he wants to play with us until mid-30s. Eat your heart out, Broberg
Nurse with a season low 17 min
#5 D tonight
Apparently the coach was not happy after the first and lambasted the team re: 16 turnovers at the blue lines. We know Nurse had two that led to goals against.
Didn’t get a chance to watch, but saw they dressed 7 D and Nurse played much less than usual so I figured he was questionable to pay based on health. Perhaps it was those turnovers instead.
This team really needed that game. 3 line production.
14 pts in 11 games is still off his 1.5+ P/G pace, but we all know he’s capable of getting up there in a hurry
I guess that was a mature victory even with a couple rooks. And they did it with 7 D & 11 F. Oh my goodness.
Nice to see a mature period defensively
Preseason is over!
Man I hate the preseason
#NeverInDoubt
Great 2nd and 3rd period. Team looks like they’ve finally woken up. The forecheck was excellent as was the back checking,
Jays win. Oilers win.
That was as good a period to close out the game as they’ve played in a while. Sans Howard’s penalty, they backchecked, they cycled low and supported the puck much better.
And the 2nd period was played up on their toes. They attached and looked much better (sans Skinner’s brain cramp). They played faster than Utah – and that’s a fast team.
McDavid scoring on an empty net… well now I’ve seen everything.
Mammoth bogged down in Oil……
Caught in the La Bamba Tar Pits.
You sir are much better at this!
Mammoths will need a few geological eras to become Oil…
Oh Conner! Clear cut break away.
Condors give up the OT PPG.
Ingram made some solid/great saves but let in a bunch of meh goals.
He’s a way away based on his last two games.
Emberson has really turned his game around lately. Maybe won’t be such an easy decision on who comes out when they want to get Regula in.
Run 10-8, obviously. 😛
Loving Podkolzin’s hustle. If only Frederic could mimic Podkolzin’s game.
Other than the obvious choices, Podz is my favourite player right now. Love his high energy style, a dog snarling for his bone.
Condors get a 4-minute PP with about 4 minutes left trailing by one.
They waste most of It but, with 30 second left, Griffith sets up Jarventie in the slot, his shot is stopped but it squeaks through, sits on the goal-line and Hamblin bangs it in to tie it up.
I think that’s four points for Griffith.
Hamblin take a penalty with 9 seconds left so Condors will be down 4-3 in OT.
The undersize Hobey Baker winner on the Habs can sure snipe them. He’s going to push 50 goals this year. I wish we had a Hobey Baker winner with a shot resembling Caulfield.
Issac Howard is NOT Cole Caufield.
Caufield was a PPG player in the NCAA as an 18-year old and won the Hobey as a 19 year old.
Why are you underselling Howard?
I’m not under-selling, I’m living in reality.
Oh well.
Savoie needs to get it going or it’s marination time.
Those tracksuits are wretched.
Oilers scored five goals at 5 on 5 in the second……. that’s a thing.
A very GOOD thing!
Whoa those track suits the coaches are wearing are butt ugly!
What a shot by Ekholm
Earlier in the day I posted how the Oilers defensemen have failed to contribute much to the scoresheet their first 10 games.
Seven (7!) defensemen points that period.
Just look at Nuge’s edges on that goal. He does a 180 so quickly just to get in position for the pass from McDavid. Then he has the presence of mind to feed it back to McDavid instantly. Nuge was every bit McDavid’s equal on that goal. And he’s barely making $5M a year.
Papa Nuge has the mojo going this year.
Griffith tied it up early in the 3rd. His third point on a slot shot.
Condors sloppy behind their own net (Samanski) and a tic tack toe to an easy back door tap-in.
4-3 Eagles.
Ingram has been “meh”.
Amazing what happens when Connor shoots from below the dots.
Finally.
BEAUTIFUL goal.
That time Nuge and McDavid had some magic.
Jays with a great game to tie the series! Yahoo!
That was lovely!
I should go for a stroll and a puff more often. Left at 3-2 come back to 4-3.
No longer a Tye game, thanks to Emberson.
Slowly Bouchard is starting to find his game.
Some points are coming and the mistakes are become fewer.
Now, Nurse…..
Nurse needs to be burried
Podkolzin is a extreme value contract when partnered with Draisaitl
The Germanator has found the range.
I think this second line is real.
McDavid just handed the puck to Cole behind the net to end the press.
McDavid will never score again.
Nurse needs to look at the video of Podkolzin dumping pucks in. He might learn something if he’s not careful
I miss 60+ goals / 150+ points McDavid…
De-flater but Stu after two stars can’t bury on a 2 on 1.
Skinner 3 goals on 12 shots…..
.750…that’s a good batting average, unfortunately wrong sport.
Roslovic has been the Oilers most dangerous forward the last 3 games or so.
He looks very dangerous to me.
I would say the 3rd line is the best spot for him get away from Connor and Leon as he seems to be able to create on his own with a couple of pluggers.
That’s not his game.
Ingram beat on a PP slot shot.
2-2 in the second.
Howard you like me now?
If liking that goal was partisan, call me an Ekholmer.
Oilers have Mammoth issues..end
Great job by Bassitt!!!
time for howard and savoie to get to the bake for a while. maybe janmarks ready lol not much improvement
You were saying?
It is shocking how many rushes against result in good opportunities yet so few of ours do. Is there a secret to creating an ‘open man’ that we
don’t know?
Like that!!!
Griffith to Pitlick to Hamblin for a wonderful beautiful goal – great passing play – awful defensive awareness.
Forwards (aside from Leon) can’t score, defenseman can’t defend, and the goalies don’t make enough saves.
This team is terrible.
Defending has generally be fine but for two Darnell Nurse turnovers – one at each blue line.
Jays playing Jay Ball!!!!!
Coach sat Philp for 6 mins of Troy Stetcher lol
Time to sit Nurse.
France with an RBI!!!!! 4-1!
