Game Eight, 2022-23: Oilers at Chicago

by Lowetide
Stuart Skinner photo by Mark Williams

The Edmonton Oilers won a highly entertaining game on Wednesday night in St. Louis, with rookie goalkeeper Stuart Skinner playing a feature role. It was a determined effort by all involved and the top end players were brilliant on the night. Jesse Puljujarvi scored his first goal of the year, cruising through the slot to run interference and maybe to get a stick on it. He did, and that’s a fine goal. A fun thing for fans today: Check out social media and observe those who frame the goal as luck, and those who suggest it was an astute play. JP is suddenly on pace for 12 goals this season. Low, but not tragic. Kailer Yamamoto and Warren Foegele are among the forwards who have yet to score a goal this season. It’s not a fun place to be for any player. It remains early days.

THE ATHLETIC!

WHAT TO EXPECT IN OCTOBER

  • At home to: VAN, CGY, BUF, CAR, STL, PIT (Expected 4-1-1) (Actual 3-3-0)
  • On the road to: STL, CHI, CGY (Expected 1-1-1) (Actual 1-0-0)
  • Overall expected result: 5-2-2, 12 points in 9 games
  • Actual October results: 4-3-0, 8 points in 7 games
  • Oilers in 2022-23: 4-3-0, 8 points in 7 games

Edmonton now has two wins in a row, and a chance to to guarantee a winning record with a victory in Chicago this evening. There were multiple positives on the evening, led by Skinner.

SUMMARY

  • Evander Kane picked up an assist and a penalty on a night when none of his three shot attempts landed on target. He is 2-4-6 through seven games, and ranks No. 5 among Oilers scorers. That’s a strong top five group among the forwards this season. He was less a factor than normal, but still productive.
  • Leon Draisaitl had an assist, three shots and four takeaways on the night. One HDSC, one penalty, he is 3-9-12 through seven games and leads Oilers scorers. Played 24:38 to lead all Oilers, one hopes he gets an 18-minute assignment tonight. Edmonton needs him for Calgary on Saturday.
  • Kailer Yamamoto had a takeaway and a blocked shot on the night, another quiet evening for a player who is 0-1-1 through six games, 46 minutes with Connor McDavid. He’s due, past due. I would hang with him for a little longer, partly because the other two lines are going so well. Dylan Holloway’s return to health could squeeze someone, and Yamamoto is a candidate. Edmonton needs something close to KY’s 20 goals a year ago, suspect he’ll begin to chime in soon.
  • Ryan Nugent-Hopkins is having an impact start to the season. Scored a fine goal, five shots, three HDSC, one takeaway. Nuge is 4-4-8 in seven games so far this season. Took 12 faceoffs, won seven. He is building the foundation for a career season in these early days. Joined 200-goal club last night.
  • Connor McDavid made a brilliant play to set up RNH for his goal, four shots and one HDSC. Took just one faceoff. 5-6-11 through seven games for the year. Showed his 200-foot acumen by taking a loose puck behind the Oilers net and beginning the sequence that resulted in the Puljujarvi goal.
  • Zach Hyman scored 1-1-2 and is 3-5-8 in seven games for Edmonton this year. Five shots, five HDSC and 10 shot attempts on the night. He was all over the ice again. He’s so consistently productive I believe we overlook his contributions at times. The expected for Hyman is a fairly difficult bar. He delivers.
  • Warren Foegele raced down his wing, circled the net, sent a pass through the middle. Darnell Nurse answered the call, Jesse Puljujarvi tipped it for the goal. One shot, one HDSC, one takeaway. He contributes to the 3line, had a great chance later on in the game.
  • Ryan McLeod had one shot, a giveaway and a takeaway. Skated miles and is increasingly confident entering the offensive zone with the puck on his stick.
  • Jesse Puljujarvi scored his first goal (and point) on the season, a nice tip from the exact spot he should be on the play. Two shots, one HDSC, he forechecked with abandon and had the wheels turning. Had some other chances and looks dynamic out there. He did not get credited with any hits, I saw two on one shift. NHL has to straighten out the inconsistencies from town to town.
  • Devin Shore had a shot on goal and won four of five in the dot. Did not get in on the PK.
  • Derek Ryan had a shot and a blocked shot. Played 1:49 clean minutes on the PK.
  • Darnell Nurse was key to the first goal of the game, three blocked shots, one or two errant passes and heavy minutes versus Robert Thomas and Brayden Schenn. He is 2-3-5 in seven games. Made a dangerous pass that led to some chaos, but was a giant late in the game. He is 4-4 goals at five-on-five, that’s playing big minutes against tough competition.
  • Cody Ceci was outshot 5-10 at five-on-five and was defending most of the night. He bent but did not break. 1-1-2 in the first seven games, 5-3 on-ice goals. Ceci was a strong signing.
  • Evan Bouchard had two shots, a giveaway, a 1-0 goal differential at five-on-five and 66 percent expected goals. Had an effective night when playing with Nurse. He makes mistakes, but is making progress. His 3-5 goal share at five-on-five is a touch unfair but I expect he’ll zoom past 50 percent soon. Two assists in the first seven games, but that only means Swing Out Sister is just around the corner.
  • Tyson Barrie was 3-8 shots at five-on-five, one shot on goal and is 1-2-3 through seven games. He is 4-2 goals at five-on-five while he’s on the ice, and has played a more mature game dating back to the late regular season 2021-22. Edmonton needs him to slide into the two-way role and he’s done it, with some slip slidin’ entering the conversation at times.
  • Brett Kulak had a takeaway, a hit and four shot blocks, a reasonable shot share (7-6) while he was on the ice and was 1-0 goals. For the year, he’s 5-0 goals at five-on-five. Played over four minutes with both Barrie and Ceci. His last two games have been his best.
  • Ryan Murray took a penalty, had one shot and one hit. Edmonton was outshot 2-7 while he was on the ice. Murray is 2-6 in five-on-five on-ice goals early in this season, and it has cost him. At five-on-five, in the first two games of the season he played a total of 29:29. In the last two? 18:59.
  • Markus Niemelainen played 8:20, about one minute of it on the PK (clean). He drew a penalty, these are the days where he’s building confidence in himself and the coaching staff. I will tell you that I stared at that third round of the 2016 draft for hours and wondered why they chose three defensemen in a row, and still think it was a curious choice. Niemelainen could save all of it if he plays in the NHL for 200+ games. He has a chance.
  • Stuart Skinner was simply amazing. Stopped 37 of 38, on a night when his expected goals-against was 3.55. He is a rock solid goaltender, able to recover quickly and is playing with great confidence. I don’t think we’re in goalie controversy, but the coaching staff will want to get him another start soon. Has a 1.44 GAA and a .957 SP. Music!

Challenge Initiated By: Edmonton
Type of Challenge: Goaltender Interference
Result: Call on the ice is upheld – No goal Edmonton
Explanation: After originally signaling a goal, the on-ice officials huddled and changed their call to “no goal”. Video review supported the call on the ice that the actions of Edmonton’s Evander Kane impaired the ability of Chicago goaltender Alex Stalock to play his position. The decision was made in accordance with Rule 69.1, which states in part, “Goals should be disallowed only if: (1) an attacking player, either by his positioning or by contact, impairs the goalkeeper’s ability to move freely within his crease or defend his goal.”<
Penalty: 2:00 minor penalty: Delay of Game – Unsuccessful Challenge

Genjutsu

This is really is probably on the Oilers coaching staff being ignorant to the fact that the NHL suffers from institutional racism.

We can pretend this isn’t the world we live in all we want.

That doesn’t change the facts.

kgo

Just rewatched the game…. Caleb Jones is shit at defending….can’t believe we got Keith for him and a 3rd 😉

dangilitis

Great game on 2nd of back to back. Well, not great, but it’s always great to win the 2nd, no matter how it is done. I think that a lot of the penalties were shit but team needed to adapt when they realized the refs were calling everything. Especially heinous for them to put Chicago on a 5 on 3 after the bullshit goal reversal

I think they should play Skinner for BOA. A bit of gamesmanship in the series and reward for delivering in that important early season match up.

Bank Shot

The penalty calling was atrocious. Kane also never gets the benefit of the doubt on anything. You know if that was Corey Perry falling all over the Oilers goalie, the other team would have been awarded two goals. NHL refs always seem to allow a goal if a player is knocked into the goalie, but not in this case. Weird eh?

Personally I would never challenge a goal that is left to the discretion of the refs. They aren’t going to ever overturn their own calls unless it’s black and white and they are forced to.

I’m rating tonight’s soup somewhere between goulash and gumbo…

Boil-in-the-Oil

So if we were worried about Connor (physical health or otherwise), we ain’t no more. What an elite athlete, what a performance … again.

theDjdj

So many genuinely phenomenal aspects to Connor. His sheer toughness is one. The guy has been hacked, slashed, held, cross-checked and illegally played probably since he was 13. It bothers me that the league just steadfastly refuses to allow stars to shine. But i am enamoured by McDavid’s determination in rising above it. Drai too.

OriginalPouzar

He definitely look all but 100% tonight but he still only took 3 face-offs (27 for Drai and 11 for Nuge) so he is being listed in at least one aspect (although he was 3-0, another reason to think he would have taken more if 100%).

northerndancer

The one taking the draw seldom ends up with it on his stick immediately after the draw. Nuge taking the draw (and winning more of his share this year) leaves McD free to pick up the puck or get a quick pass and possession when they win the draw.

OriginalPouzar

Sorry, I can’t agree that is the reason for McDavid, all of a sudden taken no draws but for the odd exception – that’s clearly due to an ailment of some sort.

northerndancer

I’m not suggesting it is not an ailment. But there is a side benefit to him not being at the dot. Also Woodcroft does not seem wedded to convention. Maybe a bit of both. The term Centre has a bit less meaning than it once did. Much more fluid.

OriginalPouzar

All I know (well, I’m pretty confidant I know) is that McDavid isn’t 100% (even though he looked pretty darn close tonight).

northerndancer

We can agree on both of those. Cheers.

Munny 2.0

First home loss for the Hawks. They don’t have the talent they used to but they sure work and skate hard.

dangilitis

They do for now while spirits are high. As the season wears on, and ownership keeps selling away parts in an attempt to get a lottery pick, that will be the true test of their mettle

lenko

Doesn’t look like many years for their rebuild. Pretty quick, wasn’t it?

John Chambers

Luke Richardson has got the group dialed in under the same philosophy as the Cleveland team in Major League:
“Ownership wants us to suck so we’re going to play our asses off and screw their re-build plans.”

theDjdj

You have to give the E Kane: he creates genuine havoc. The prototypical power forward. Chaos incarnate.

GarbanzoHumanBean

Damn refs making me believe in conspiracy theories. Trap game!

The Hawks usually give us some trouble, don’t they?

And y’all thought I was talking out of my ass for the 5034th time this year.

Patrick Kane has been such an Oiler killer over the years

dcsj

need to get him to be an Oiler, eh?

Ice Sage

is there room for TWO Kanes??????

cowboy bill

Could you imagine two Kanes with either of McDavid or Draisaitl or even Nuge or MacLeod.

Ice Sage

why, yes, yes I can! more 8-6 wins coming up LOL

Pretendergast

Who else in this world makes a hat trick 4 point night look so automatic. That hat trick goal was pure filth. Im physically ill watching it.

theDjdj

Only the best one,

Scungilli Slushy

E Kane dominates every stat on the sheet, and some that aren’t

Finishes it all with a sweet dish

He’s the 2nd MEP – Most Extreme Player. Connor is always First

Scungilli Slushy

They certainly benefit from the fire Kane brings

After seasons of flatness emotionally

He’s the new Tikkanen

OriginalPouzar

I thought the refs were going to on their phones to talk about how to screw the Oilers all season long because of him?

Scungilli Slushy

I didn’t say that

OriginalPouzar

Someone else did.

OriginalPouzar

Interesting, one has to think Skinner gets the start on Saturday made in Calgary.

Saturday night, HNIC, big rivalry game against two top teams, revenge needed – Skinner likely to get his second start in three games……

meanashell11

I don’t think it’s that simple….

theDjdj

It would be hard not to give it to the Stew over the Soup. I think they go with Campbell though.

Munny 2.0

Goalie du Jour™

Scungilli Slushy

Given the MO they go with the vet, no?

R E S P E C T

Reja

You have to go with the hot hand Campbell would say the same thing.

OriginalPouzar

Does Woody have an MO in this situation?

His MO is actually riding Skinner hard (in the AHL).

Scungilli Slushy

The org seems to give the vets their chances

I agree with it in terms of human management

There can’t be hard feelings if you truly get passed

Also younger players have to displace someone to get their shot

OriginalPouzar

The org may have a history or MO.

At the same time, I’m highly confidant the starting goaltender on Saturday is 100% Woodcroft’s decision and he doesn’t have an MO as an NHL coach in this situation.

I’d be shocked if it’s not Campbell

jp

Interesting, one has to think Skinner gets the start on Saturday made in Calgary.

That’s how you start a goalie controversy.

KnightRain

I felt worn out by the emotional rollercoaster disguised as a hockey game…

delooper

I was wrong on the 7-4 prediction, but 6-5 is good enough for this steaming mess of a game.

Tarkus

Oilers are undefeated when scoring first.

delooper

Have they had more than one game where they scored first?

theDjdj

All 4 wins I think

Tarkus

Four now. All wins. (CAR, PIT, STL, CHI).

Their other win was the Game 1 rally vs. VAN.

Their three losses came when surrendering the first goal.

The moral: good things happen when they score first!

dangilitis

Sportsnet posted a stat showing they were one of the best when they score first. That being said, records for all teams seem pretty darn good when that occurs. Well, not the Canucks, but they suck

fishman

What a satisfying win of a debacle of a game. I hope NHL has a close look at this game tape.

tsunami

yeah right lol… like that ever happens

I enjoyed the outcome. I was entertained though. Game of Thrones one.

Oh my! Sahweet

KnightRain

BOOM!!! Drai from his spot!!! What a great shift by that whole line!!!

Wow Yam with the steal, Drai with the finish!!!!!

What a play by Kailer.

What a pass by Kane,

Great finish by Drai.

The sights on the Drai rifle are just fine TYVM

LMHF#1

3 Oilers defending no one.

Good thing they can score.

Prairie_Sentinel

To paraphrase the ex-stripper owner of the Cleveland baseball team in Major League – I hate that f*cking song.

delooper

When Italy won their most recent World Cup, it became their unofficial anthem. In Rome, for 3 days after the final you could hear the song being sun, beat, and hummed all around the city. That, and there was 24/7 naked dancing around Termini station.

Scungilli Slushy

They’re looking a bit sluggish now

Tarkus

Hyman, Nuge and Barrie also in photo.

Massive rebound. Dang.

OmJo

Okay, so Hyman can’t miss HDSC anymore. Every time it happens, the other teams scores.

KnightRain

Ugh. What was Barrie doing?

theDjdj

Campbell really needs to control those bounces off his chest

OriginalPouzar

Right off the chest…….

I would love to see Evander get a goal here

Scungilli Slushy

I’m liking the ‘normal’ NHL goalering

Oilers in the 1-2-2 again. Need to avoid the box. Refs are clearly looking

Paulie

71 leaving a few pucks behind tonight when zooming into the o-zone.

OmJo

The Oilers first unit tries to be too fancy on the PP. Don’t get me wrong, when it works, it results in some magnificent goals. But when it doesn’t work, boy is it frustrating to watch.

OriginalPouzar

They have 3 PP goals and the fanciest of all the plays should have been buried by Nuge.

I’ve also seen Barrie fire two from the point and Bouch at least one.

Scungilli Slushy

When they get too cute it isn’t good in a lot of games

Munny 2.0

Too many passes

KnightRain

That was the first Real slash that they called all game…outta 3 or 4 they’ve called…smh…
