WHAT TO EXPECT IN OCTOBER
- At home to: VAN, CGY, BUF, CAR, STL, PIT (Expected 4-1-1) (Actual 3-3-0)
- On the road to: STL, CHI, CGY (Expected 1-1-1) (Actual 2-0-0)
- Overall expected result: 5-2-2, 12 points in 9 games
- Actual October results: 5-3-0, 10 points in 8 games
- Oilers in 2022-23: 5-3-0, 10 points in 8 games
Edmonton’s last three games have been the best of the month, and if the team wins this evening my prediction will have been close enough for jazz.
OILERS 2022-23 SCORING
The top two lines look interchangeable and the third line is your basic nightmare for opponents. Using the centers three as proxy for goal differential at even strength, we get McDavid (6-5, 55 percent), Draisaitl (7-6, 54 percent), McLeod (3-2, 60 percent) and 97-29 together (3-2, 60 percent). This is early, a small sample, but positive.
DEFENSE EVEN-STRENGTH GOAL DIFFERENTIALS
- Brett Kulak 6-1 (86 percent)
- Tyson Barrie 7-3 (70 percent)
- Darnell Nurse 8-5 (62 percent)
- Cody Ceci 7-5 (58 percent)
- Markus Niemelainen 2-2 (50 percent)
- Evan Bouchard 5-8 (38 percent|)
- Ryan Murray 2-6 (25 percent)
Murray was an inexpensive add in September, he looked to be a reasonable option as a 6-7D based on recent seasons. I suggested he might land on the third pairing with Tyson Barrie, but instead he played with Evan Bouchard in the early days of the season. The duo was 0-5 goals at even strength in 39 minutes. Note, these are even strength numbers so include empty-net totals. Murray was scratched in the last game and I wonder what happens next. Philip Broberg is scheduled to play tonight.
HOCKEY NIGHT IN CANADA
It was always the build toward HNIC game. I’d get up, have breakfast (Mom breakfasts were puffed wheat or toast, if I was at Grandma’s house it was bacon, fresh bread and homemade jam) and re-read The Hockey News. The TV promoted the Saturday games, I always hoped for expansion teams (they were new and had colorful uniforms), but it was often Leafs-Habs or Habs-Rangers. If the Bruins were on, there was special anticipation, because Bobby Orr and the big, bad Bruins were a joy to behold. Sometimes it would be the Minnesota North Stars and they had some fun players. Sometimes the game scheduled for the Forum would be canceled due to a blizzard and we’d get Toronto-Pittsburgh or something.
The rookies back then came in two types. You had your rookie at 20 with long hair and a modern look (Rick Martin) and you’d have your older vet who finally made the grade and looked like one of my Dad’s friends (Marv Edwards). For me, as a kid, the more obscure the better, one of the reasons I migrated to the California Seals so early. They were so obscure many of the players who were top line didn’t get a hockey card until the following year. I liked the Seals because Bill Hicke played for them, and then Ernie, and I knew them from reading The Hockey News. Bob Baun, too. Later, Gilles Meloche, Ivan Boldirev, Carol Vadnais and others became favourites. Edmonton’s rookies the season number just three: Stuart Skinner, Markus Niemelainen and Dylan Holloway. I expect we’ll see Philip Broberg soon enough. Your question for the day: What rookie crop was the best for Edmonton?
- 1980-81: Jari Kurri, Glenn Anderson, Paul Coffey, Charlie Huddy, Andy Moog
THE 2022-23 ROOKIE CROP
- Total Rookies of Interest: 3 so far, more to come
- 2023 Draft Notes: No one from the most recent draft turned pro, let alone made the NHL. The days of ‘draft to NHL in one summer’ is long gone.
- Best Player as a Rookie: Stuart Skinner. He’s exceptional so far this year, to the point it’s legit to wonder if he starts tonight. I don’t believe he will.
- Second Best Player as a Rookie: Markus Niemelainen. He has been a pleasant surprise since coming over to play in Bakersfield back in February of 2021.
- Oldest Rookie: Niemelainen, although Skinner was born later the same year.
- Oldest Rookie Who Played a Lot: Too soon to know.
- Most Unusual Story: Philip Broberg. He played an uneven young stars, preseason and then headed for Bakersfield where he has yet to play. It sounds like he was dealing with some malady and that could mean reports of his inconsistent play were injury aided this fall. We’ll see, but if he’s right in Bakersfield I can see a recall. No one has been so impressive Broberg’s path is blocked.
- Longest NHL careers. Too soon to know.
- Anything Else? I believe the Oilers will see Broberg, James Hamblin, Xavier Bourgault and possibly Mike Kesselring this winter.
- Will any of these men win the Calder? Too soon to know. If Holloway gets a push on one of the top lines, even for a couple of months, he could emerge as a contender.
Matthews with ANOTHER 0-0-0 what in the shit does he think he’s Warren Foegele or something?
Colorado giving up a FOUR spot in the 3rd to the damn Islanders.
Brogan Rafferty still trying to get his first Norris vote.
The Oilers beat the Phlegms
And McDavid back on top where he belongs in all categories.
The team owes Skinner a steak dinner with a Lobster tail just because.
Hehehe this is FUN. So much fricken FUN.
Oh oh oh and yea let’s see how that $9.5 million for Hubby ages.
Treliving playing some 4D chess on that signing. It was like the Lucic deal, negative value the second it was signed.
Early days, but I think he’s better defensively than Johnny Hockey.
And I don’t think Sutter cares abouit the O till the D is there.
Hubbys contract will be $10.5M AAV, not $9.5M.
So, even better!
Flames first line was pretty invisible last night. Johnny and Tkachuk gave the Oilers fits at times.
I like playing against this new look Flames. Just sift everything from the point and hope for the best. I think they’ll have trouble when every other team ramps up the intensity.
Jesse had 4 of the most aggressive plays of his career tonight. Plowed over Lucic, reverse elbowed Lindholm in the head, flattened Dube, and stood up to Lucic for McLeod….I think Kane has woken him up
Some ugly stats via Natural Stat Trick tonight.
3rd game in 4 nights….all wins. On the road.
Great weekend.
Boys can get some well earned rest now.
I agree with the panel. McDavid just took over.
Flames look very impotent without Gaudreau and Turtle.
The Sportlogiq numbers saw if very differently though:
https://twitter.com/JasonGregor/status/1586587305065971713/photo/1
Per Gregor: Sportlogiq looked favourably upon the Oilers tonight:

Yes, confirms the eye test as many mentioned….Flames choosing volume over quality
That’s some telling data.
A breakdown by period would be even more telling. Flames didn’t get much of a sniff in the 3rd
Lucic was effective tonight. I hope he finishes with 30 pts and the Flames resign him to 4 x 2 mil 😉
He’s successfully filling a role there. Happy for the guy. Sutter is the perfect coach for him
I’m not sure I would use the word happy, but like many Oilers contracts that went south, it is not the fault of the player (especially when he reportedly turned down similar or more lucrative offers elsewhere). Still want the Flames to keep paying him more and longer than they should to fill that 4th line role
Unlikely. As the season progresses and the game speeds up we will see him turn into a ghost again.
Reporter: Huberdeau missed half the first… what happened?
Sutter: “He was taking a shit.”
Woodcroft: “[Skinner] is one half of a good goaltending tandem.”
Chose his words carefully there.
And still the panel think Flames the better team? What is the definition? It is a team game but… McDavid, Drai, Hyman, now Stu.. Nuge. Holloway soon, McLeod. I think they are blind to depth accrued by Oilers recently.
If the Flames are the better team, the Oilers can sleep quite tranquil tonight…..:)
If only we had some sort of way of measuring a team’s worth against eachother. Some type of…match, of sorts.
Sutter (Definitely worth a click)
https://twitter.com/ConnorHalley/status/1586584093445492737?s=20&t=_kUGGpTx1Y_T3OC_V4d8uw
Wow, Sutter confirms he truly is a people person. NOT.
But honestly, I don’t recall hearing Huberdeau’s name mentioned alot during the game. Benched, injured…?
Huberdeau is like Gaudreau….when the stress increases, the production decreases. That “top” line has yet to score 5 v 5…..but they are supposedly the better team lol
They mentioned that the Flames first line (Huberdeau’s line) has yet to score a goal at 5v5 this season. Huberdeau played over 16 minutes and was a total non-factor. That contract is going to age well.
Classy……wow.
I wonder what this game did for Markstrom’s confidence (I can guess, haha) … Skinner’s should be through the roof.
Great game, great outcome.
The Flames could lose every game until the end of time. And I’d still hate them with every molecule of my being.
The good guys won tonight and the bad guys lost, and they deserved to lose. Not a lot of grade As for them losers.
Oilers win, Lames lose, Leafs continue to push out Keefe. Excellent Sat
Puljujarvi has Lennie Small strength. He just crushes skaters accidentally. Players just bounce of him.
What’s with this casual look set what’s next folding couches and making out with each other. I’ll take Tocchet, Messier and Chelios over this forced clown act.
How plausible are either of these Gretzky feats for McDavid to achieve: 200 point season, 50 in 50?
50 in 39 is the Gretz feat. McD could do it if he pushed (I think) but I’d rather a full season. 200, however, requires more games and more production. Less likely in todays league.
50 in 39 boggles the mind. Like so many Gretzky feats. 200 does seem out of the reach of mortal men these days. I’ll take McDavid pipping Kucherov with the most points since the dead puck era though
200 isn’t plausible at all. The other is, unlikely, but plausible.
200 is a video game number with the difficulty setting on low – the goalies are far bigger and better now, and the defensemen aren’t pylons anymore. Even Gretz wouldn’t score 200 in today’s NHL.
OTOH prime Gretzky with todays lighter equipment and composite sticks would still outscore everyone else.
200 is big but 50 in 39 is the most unreachable of all NHL records. That or the Dimaggio streak.
Drai was scoring at will early last season and was asked if he thought he could score 82 goals, lol. Connor could hit 60 goals and 160 points, but it is long season. I look forward to the end result, but 200 points is not realistic.
Regardless, sit back and enjoy the show, who know what he is capable of?
Fun game tonight – shots flatter the Flames I think. Oilers had some great chances off the cycle. For the most part the boys didn’t allow the Flames too many rush chances or clean looks, and just played a conservative grinding game tonight.
Stu made a huge stop to prevent Backlund from getting another shortie. The first goal he probably wants back but he was otherwise a brick wall in net tonight and outplayed Markstrom.
They shoot some serious volume from the blue I feel. Haven’t looked at the heat map but Stone took a lot of shots
Point shots with traffic are a good strategy for some types of teams, but relying more on puck luck and low goals against. “Sutter Hockey”
In the 1st/3rd the Oilers did a much better job keeping them to the outside and clearing out garbage in front. The Flames owned us in the 2nd, seemingly waltzing into the slot several times uncontested while their D were frustratingly good at thwarting HDSC at the last moment.
I also noticed the Oil were waiting a few times behind the net to set up, and then were unable to get it through the neutral zone, with Flames in fixed positions. Were they employing a trap?
Not so much a trap … rather the Flames defence is as advertised, and it’s tough sledding to get an open look against them. They transition the puck very quickly. Oilers were dumping and chasing right from the start – this looked to be the game plan tonight, likely to limit odd man rushes against. It paid off in the third when Markstrom came out of his net to play the puck.
Calgary’s a good team (spits) but the Huberdeau and Kadri contracts are going to be huge anchors within a couple of seasons. They don’t have a lot in the system to save them either.
It’s such an insult from Leafs fans to compare Bunting to Hyman. If anyone tries let’s remind them that Hyman currently has more points and goals than any Leaf
I was thoroughly impressed by Holloway. He doesn’t look like a Rookie. You have to give Holland and his team some serious credit
He reminds me of McLeod 2 years ago…
I could see him getting some shifts on Draisaitl’s line later in the year if his form continues.
Good comparison. I would say Holloway’s puck skills are superior at same age.
Agreed. Needs to move up to 3rd line.
He isn’t getting the ice time or linemates Holland mentioned that he would be receiving to stay in the NHL, so I am wondering what the plan is now. He played 8:07 with 4 PiM’s vs Chicago and played 5:29 tonight.
Hrudey is an idiot. You don’t start Skinner next game without creating controversy. Next game is Soupys. He’s the starter and deserves to fight fur his job.
I’m not so sure. Skinner had a hell of a game there. I’d start Skinner again and give Campbell the game after that.
The schedule is set up to alternate through the road trip through the Southeast US.
Totally agree that Hrudey is an idiot. It’s galling to have a guy wearing Flames panties on the HNIC broadcast.
Bieksa remains objective even though he frickin played for the Canucks
He’s trying to start a controversy but Woody’s to smart for the Flame Troll.
Ride the Skinner train. Points early are same as points late.
Campbell can get hot later
Zachary Hyman = Ryan Smyth
Yup, that’s my comparison to. With better skating though. Consistent bother for the opposition. Goes to the net at every opportunity
All this tricky moves he’s had along the boards totally remind me of Smithy. Along with most of his goals scored 7 feet from the net in.
All he needs is a mullet.
Tues is Drai night – Preds at home!
Please and thank you.
Markstrom going to have trouble sleeping tonight…..
I think he sleeps poorly before any game against McD. He’s thoroughly entrenched in a recurring nightmare for sure
I have no words.
Sorry, I lied:
Good BoA is playoff hockey in the regular season and here we are nine games in and that game reeked, reeked, of playoff.
Hard, fast hockey for 60 minutes. Just wow. Commitment by everyone, both teams. Largely disciplined considering some of the idiotic calls. That was a hockey game.
And we won. Fuck the Flames.
And this will be the McSupernova season. I took 152 in the McDynasty March. :p
Friedman just called Skinner the number 1.
Friedman just called Skinner the number 1.
====================
Too soon.
Yep
Hilarious that that just lowered Skinner’s save percentage. That’s some ice cold stew.
Skinner, hard work and some McDavid magic. A recipe for success, right there. Hyman for 50 without a hatty all season? It could happen…
Skinner had a game but I also think the Flames don’t generate a lot of really high quality chances.
They are great at creating chances down low, but those don’t always cash. Huberdeau missed some sitters tonight though, not impressed with him so far for the Flames.
With the way Flames play though with so many shots from all over and lots of redirects and traffic, Stu’s calm and size plus great pads down low.. I think he suits game against the rivals well..
That’s a great point. Flames play a unique style. Pucks from everywhere.
Not much off the rush.
Rebound controll key
I believe their top line has one goal that’s not PP….
The said in the broadcast they hadn’t scored a 5×5 goal this year
Yeah, some “top” line that is lol
Foegele is a much better player this year than all of last year. Glad the team stuck with him.
Foggy is the motor, McLeod the lightning and Jesse the chaos(and, lately, physical play). Don’t break up this line! They’re gonna break through soon!
Completely agree!
It never gets old beating the Phlegms.
Schadenfreude dialed up to eleven every time!
Watching McDavid and the Boys take that game over must make HH’s throat feel extremely dry.
Also, holy hell Darnell Nurse – his defensive zone board work in the 3rd was elite of the elite.
Jesse realizing he’s big tonight – looked good on him.
Nothing better than to see the shamers beaten after their pathic display of sportsmen ship with the Zamboni this afternoon
What happened?
delayed the Oilers moving skate by cleaning the ice late.
I love these games where the Oilers don’t spot their opponent a 3-goal lead in the first period. Feels less epic, but nice and fun.
Skinner! He’s now 1A
What a game by Stuart fucking Skinner.
Gutting out that regulation win, coming from behind, on the 3rd in 4 nights (all travel between) and 4 in 6 against a fully restored team – wow.
Yup, got some real luck but who cares.
Oh Hyman. So close and yet so far…
Oh what a great win! This team does not give up. Skinner terrific.
Skinner the principal reason for the win.
I see what you did there, Tarkus.
Yeah baby!!
Great stuff
What a road trip
Wow, some poise late there in a defensive zone shift – taking time to make plays – vets.
Been playing patient since puck drop.
phlegms best play is to pass to stoner to shoot
More exceptional defensive zone board work by Nurse – my goodness his last few shits down low….
Nurse is owning the Flames along the boards in the defensive zone.
We are seeing McDavid absolutely take games over. He’s scoring at the same pace as he was in that historic playoff performance last season. We are seeing McDavid take his game to yet another level, and it’s incredible to watch in real time.
Hyman was a huge catalyst
Holloway with his 1st NHL point as he’s credited with an assist on McDavid’s equalizer. (Ceci the other helper.)
Good to see Jesse standing up to luci. Of course he picks on a none physical player
Draisaitl turnstiles Toffoli but Yamamoto can’t do anything with the pass. Toffoli covering for the defenseman is a prime example of what can go wrong when the Dman puts himself out of position.
My feed is behind, but that was a beauty goal by Hyman.
Wtf is with Yammo whiffing…
Great defensive board work by Nurse – exceptional.
