Time flies. It seems like only yesterday that Connor McDavid was drafted, and I took my daughter to the orientation camp session that was open to the public at Northlands (Rexall). At that time, I wrote “It’s important to remember the moment, to hold it in your mind’s eye. The release, the adrenalin, the pure joy, the absolute majesty of the moment. The card, the turn, the cracking voice, the elation for us and the death rattle for every other fan base in the NHL. Music! Music! Oh my GOD, MUSIC! Hold on to it. Forever. It’s a big one. Never let anyone tell you differently.”
I don’t think anyone feels differently to this day.

TAKE ME TO THE RIVER
The summer McDavid was drafted I was still doing the RE series twice a year, once preseason and then after the year. I chose “Take Me To The River” as the theme for the rookie and predicted 70 games, 23-39-62 (.886 points-game) for the new arrival. The grumpy guy showed up with attitude and some ideas. We argued about many things, including how much Nail Yakupov would play with McDavid. Answer: 205 minutes, with a 54 percent shot share and 54 percent goal share. Keep it in mind during this read. It becomes important. Trust me.
- How did you reach the RE total? I took his NHLE (82GP, 23-40-63 .768) walked it back to 70 games (he has missed some time to injury), and then walked it forward based on what we know about really gifted players and their jumping projected NHLE’s.
- Yeah, looks like you slapped 70 games on his NHLE. I know, it’s galling, makes it look like I barely looked at it.
- Well, you’re busy with the dog and that two-hour radio show. Oh screw off, I actually looked at this for awhile. Patrick Kane’s NHLE (OHL: 26-36-62 ACTUAL: 82gp, 21-51-72) was a guideline but he passed it by 10 points. McDavid’s RE, if taken over 82 games, exceeds his NHLE by 10 points.
- God. Worthless! Why don’t you just count the number of times your dog barks in a day? Same predictive power. Alright smart ass, what’s a good number?
- 97 points. Okay, we’re done.
- Don’t blame me when people remind you of my prediction next spring. Noted.
- It should be higher. One of the problems I have with hanging a higher number on McDavid (if he played 82 games and scored at the rate I’m projecting, he’d post 73 points) is the quality of the team around him. The forwards are fine, in fact very good, but the defense is poor and McDavid will be on the ice with some clunkers as things stand. Kane’s defensemen in his rookie season? Duncan Keith, Dustin Byfuglien, Brent Seabrook, James Wisniewski, Brent Sopel, Cam Barker. There are some good passers and puck movers in the group. Edmonton’s issues with passing tape to tape and hitting the exiting forward on the fly are legend, so projecting McDavid—even as I did—could be too strong. We’ll see, he’s a tough projection because he is so very talented.
- Let’s go back to last year. Who were his wingers in junior? Brock Otten from OHL Prospects tells us Alex Debrincat all year, and then Nick Betz and eventually Remi Elie (post trade) saw time as the other wing.
- What kind of players are they? Alex Debrincat is ‘the little engine that could’ accoring to Otten, a small, skilled whirlwind who scored 104 points last season. Draft eligible 2016.
- Betz? Nick Betz is a mountain on skates, 6.04 and 220. Good on the forecheck and rattles bones. Not a great skater but he’s good enough to have a pro career.
- Elie? Skilled offensive player with size and speed, aggressive. A very nice player, Dallas draft pick.
- Who will be his wingers? I’d guess he’ll spend time with Hall, Pouliot among LW’s and Eberle, Purcell, Korpikoski and the cast of Annie on RW.
- Opening night? It’s in St. Louis, so I’ll guess Hall—Eberle, but it might be Hall—Korpikoski.
- They need to shelter McDavid. On the road? Against a very good team like St. Louis? HOW?
- Put him with Hendricks and Purcell. Get real. Good grief, you WON THE LOTTERY! Why put a denver boot on your brand new race car? It makes zero sense.
- And yet no McDavid—Yakupov. Race car drivers always have safety belts, McDavid and Yakupov opening night St. Louis could have matching -3’s in a quick hurry.
- No Hall—Yakupov? I think McLellan will run Hall—McDavid and Pouliot—Nuge and then slide Eberle up and down the 1-2. I’ve based the RE on it.
- So, no top 2line minutes for Yakupov? Maybe McLellan goes Hall—McDavid—Eberle and Pouliot—Nuge—Yakupov but I don’t think he’ll do that, at least to start the season. Chiarelli brought Korpikoski in for some reason, suspect it’s to have another veteran winger to run up and down the depth chart.
- What about a 3line of McDavid—Yakupov and a veteran? I think that’s asking a lot of McDavid to be honest, no matter the veteran winger. Nail is not the most structured player without the puck.
- Who would be the perfect RW for McDavid next season? Marian Hossa.
- If your only choices for RW on McDavid’s line are Yakupov or Purcell, who do you choose? Purcell.
- WHY? Two-way forwards, veterans if you have them. McDavid will get a two-way forward and a pure skill winger with experience, my guess being Taylor Hall. Yakupov should have had that from day one.
- You’re saying McLellan will NEVER play McDavid with Yakupov? I’m saying that’s my guess.
- Purcell is slow and he’s not a two-way player. He’s a veteran with soft hands who knows which way the wind blows. Veterans with opportunity are going to work hard to maximize it. I suspect he’s lifting Buicks as we speak. He’s 29 years old and with some good luck and chemistry, Purcell could be looking at another nice pay day.
- He’ll never make $4.5 million again. No, but if he comes in, finds some chemistry on a skill line with a great center (Oilers have a lot of them) and gets on the PP enough, he could cash nicely.
- Bah! Who did Yak play most with as a rookie? Sam Gagner and Magnus Paajarvi. I wonder if they’ll go into the Hall of Fame together.
- How many guys play RW on your RE? Seven.
- And Draisaitl? Leave it. We’ll get there.
- Does McDavid win the Calder? I think he will.
- Does McDavid have a weakness? I think there are two things we’ll be discussing next summer: Injuries (or lack of) and his shooting ability/effectiveness. I think he has a quick release and in close he’s money (so, so fast) but we’re not looking at a guy who can snipe from 20 feet. As he matures (much like Nuge and what we discussed yesterday) I’m sure McDavid will improve in this area. Most of these guys, Crosby included, are manic about improvement so he’s probably already bashing in his Dad’s garage door as we speak.
- And the injury? Hall played 79% of the schedule as a rookie, Nuge played 76%. Yak played them all but he was at a different spot in the batting order and is built like a Mack truck. We should be prepared for some games lost due to injury.
- Nuge’s injury was a fluke! Teenagers in a man’s league. It’s an issue, that’s my only point. I’m not suggesting bubble wrap.
- And still no quarter on McDavid—Yakupov? Look, you don’t need to be concerned with my opinion, Todd McLellan will make the call. Maybe those two men play in the Joey Moss, rattle and hum and play their careers together. That’s a beautiful thought, I’m just not able to see it from here. Todd McLellan is very good at unlocking skill, betting against a spike for Yakupov is a bad idea for next season. I just don’t see Yak as part of the McDavid story, this season.
- Is there a free agent you’d like to see added for the express purpose of Hall—McDavid? I mentioned Curtis Glencross awhile back, he might fit. Good speed, two-way ability and enough skill to cash some goals.
- Not long to go now. Every day feels like forever. What does it say about us? It’s summer, beautiful day piled upon beautiful day and the city of Edmonton is hoping the gales of November come early.
- Why this song? Very spiritual, about awakening, a new beginning. Casting aside vices, false saviours and failed attempts to find happiness, finding it right in front of you, all around you, having it literally fall upon you like manna from heaven. Best. Take me to river, indeed.
FINAL TALLY
- GRUMPY GUY PREDICTION: 1.18 PTS-GAME
- ACTUAL RESULTS: 1.07 PTS-GAME
- LOWETIDE PREDICTION: .886 PTS-GAME
Grumpy guy was over by five points (his prediction would have delivered 53 points in 45 games, McDavid landed on 48 points) and my prediction was under by eight points (my prediction would have delivered 40 points). Winner: Grumpy guy!
One of the great pleasures of observing McDavid and chronicling his career is trying to catch up to his brilliance. I work very hard on the reasonable expectations series but 97’s talent is just too fast for me. For the 2022-23 season, I predicted 45-81-126 in 77 games (1.64 pts-game). He is currently at 1.81 pts-game. I’m sure there have been times my predictions exceeded actual results, but the captain continues to stretch the limits of reasonable and fly past them like they’re a house on the side of the road. He is a truly amazing player.
LOWETIDE AND JAMIESON

McWow.
And what a 4th line we have. Our bottom 6 is miles better than we’ve had at any time since the onset of the DoD. when it gets hard to think of how to get them all in the line-up, you know you have a strong bass line (coz there’s Kostin and Holloway when they’re healthy too).
McDavid is doing two or three new things every game now it seems. I believe he has done this in the last quarter of seasons in the past. Expands his repertoire with new moves… passes, angles, looks, feints, dekes etc. Must work on developing them through the earlier part of the season.
Another game where the scoring was ignited by the powerplay, and the second one at that. I worry for the games where we don’t get that opportunity to get it going.
Pitt in a heat wave today. That puck really did not want to settle down. This Penguin tribe doesn’t look very playoffy. They’re melting away.
Sweet pass by Jesse to setup Shore. And then iron at the end of the game. Sheesh. Some team should find Jesse a juseful bet.
72 points. +30 goal differential. 2nd in the Div. 3rd in the conference to a team that has lost 5 in a row and trails us on wins and regulation wins and only leads on games in hand. Only three teams in the league have lost just one game in regulation over their last ten games: Edmonton, Carolina and Vegas.
Flames have never won in Vegreville. Put up big eggs there. They did a good job of honouring that tradition tonight. I was kind of hoping they would put some effort into a futile attempt to catch us and in doing so take some points off true contenders, but… it was not to be. They should probably re-name the loser point The Flame. Right?

WTF Connor has 109 points? He just broke 100 like 5 days ago?!!!!
Connor has more 4 point games than 0 point games this year….8 vs 6…that’s excluding his one 5 point game….let that sink in

Desi’s PK shift with 10:10 remaining in the 2nd is worth re-watching…he’s so sound defensivley, he’s covering multiple lanes with body and blade, and directing traffic…he’s a poor man’s Chara already….I’m excited to see how high his ceiling is.
J.P looks so good down in the lineup. No spotlight no added pressure just play hockey. J.P should of been used on shutdown line and yes that means on the ice with the opposition pulling their netminder. Jesse could quietly bag 17-20 Goals if left alone playing with a couple of other lower on the totem pole players.
BOS hangs on and wins in regulation 6-5 over SEA
Louie’s boy with the tiebreaker with about a minute and a half to play in the 3rd.
Sinking in Seattle.
The Bruins scored 2 backbreaking Goals in the last 4 minutes.
I only caught the last 60 seconds – I didn’t realize SEA spit the bit late in the 3rd
That’s a shame
Swayman was in net and he’s their #2.
Bruins are 33-11 GF/GA at even strength when Bergie is on the ice.
11 Goals Against in 666 minutes, or .99 Goals per hour, oh my.
They were monsters yesterday, landing Orlov is unbelievable. Hathaway adds depth and both players are extremely physical.
The scoring is so spread around they will be tough to defend against.
Pastrnak goal was sick.
I know he’s not the puck-mover people are looking for – but if Parayko is available – then you have to look at it. If the deal includes Ceci and Yamamoto plus a UFA like Janmark – that covers the cap and even gives us a bit of space. STL could use a dman contract like Ceci and a RW like Yamo. Add picks and/or prospects as necessary.
Where you get the puck mover boost is by loading up Nurse-Parayko against the toughs. They would be hell to play against and give our better puck movers (Bouch/Barrie/Broburg/Kulak) easier minutes.
Depends on what STL wants and Parayko’s health. He’s been buried in tough minutes with poor partners this season. His PDO is in the toilet but his overall SA/HDSA/GA are not that different from last season. What has collapsed this year is offensive production while he’s on the ice. Don’t know how much is his fault but he never plays with Krug or Faulk and almost never has an offensive zone face-off. Potentially a buy low but I haven’t watched him at all this season to know for sure.
For sure I still like Karlsson better – but Parayko playing tough minutes with a decent partner ended up being the formula STL used to win a cup.
Parayko is absolutely who I target if he’s available. Karlsson is insanity.
Knights in OT.
The 3 point game everyone was hoping for!
16 seconds left in a tie game and Lucic on the ice. I love you Sutter, never change.
And he starts OT with Backlund and Dube.
Did he really start OT? That is wild
Fuck off, really? Did Lucic really start OT?
Sorry, I meant Sutter starts OT with Backlund, Dube and Tanev. Not Lucic
Great defence by 97 today from what I saw.
Great to see Yamamoto with a HD goal and 3 iHDCF’s
He’s up to 3.25/60 rate. Still not up to his normal rates yet.
Last year 3.88
4.25 before
4.02 before that
He doesn’t possess a great shot so if he wants goals he has to be near the net.
He had a really tough stretch coming out of camp.
Since he returned from his first IR stint in December he’s been the same player he always was (though people like him less now).
His iHDCF rate since early December is 4.13. He’s scored ~0.5 points/game. Almost all of it has been at 5v5. He’s been a quality penalty killer. He’s had 4GV and 18TK in his 22 games.
Good to hear.
4v5 PK:
If we go by GA/60 he is the Oilers top PKer – all positions
4th in Takeaway rate on the 4v5PK – all positions
behind Ryan, McDavid and Janmark
of the 6 FW that have at least an hour on the 4v5Penalty Kill he’s 2nd in blocked shots rate behind Janmark
of the 9 who have at least a half hour he’s 5th
Flames have now blown 21 leads this year lol
Of course it turns into a 3 point game…
of course…
It’s unfortunate…
But it’s soooo funny at the same
time. Leaky defending Darryl… Leaky leaky defending.
Honestly can’t say Vegas worries me at all so tonight I laugh
Their goaltending might be worse than ours.
Flames-Knights tied now with under 6 to play.
Even beyond wanting the Flames to lose generally, the cost benefit of finishing 1st vs. missing the playoffs pushes me towards wanting the Knights to win this one.
I’m definitely going risk averse rather than greedy on this one.
I gotta admit I’m not a fan of Jesse for many reasons. That said when Woodcroft plays him in situations like tonight and not top 6 he’s incredibly effective. Yes LT I said it. I got all day for him if he plays like that.
Pitt looked absolutely terrible tonight plus 2 goals called back. It was a good effort but they did give up a lot of chances. I thought Skinner had a sneaky good game.
Also, Poolparty reinventing how to play at this level with hands of stone. Good gord that was a gimme.
Score effects!
say it with me “score effects!”
Does a Penalty shot count as a PP Goal in the stats?
No
but it does count as a goal for the stats (unlike scoring in the SO).
So than the Penalty Shot is in its own catergory. Pavel Bure leads the way with 7 Goals Brad Marchand has 6 with a few other players. Interestingly A.A has 3. Vincent Lecavaler leads all players with 13 attempts.
Great game tonight. Have to say that Pittsburg is terrible. Even down by one early the way the Pens turned the puck over it was only a matter of time. I’d say the gap between Jesse and Yamamoto has shrunken to razor thin levels. Jesse has played better( still not good value at 3 million) of late and Yamamoto is having a tough time getting back to his A game with all of the injuries.
If it comes down to those two, I would keep Jesse and move Yamo. Very impressed with the 4th line tonight:)
I thought Jesse was the more impactful player tonight. He was also getting more ice time – had 3 more 5 on 5 minutes than Yamo through two periods (Yamo closed the gap a bit in the garbage time 3rd period).
Time to take a run at Chychrun. Kulak, Bourgault, and 2023 first
Does anyone else feel like his value is plummeting? Rumors of an injury and a point of no return with him and the organization.
Also, with the level of skill of modern day defenseman, does it matter if they play on their natural side?
Can we just get Gost for like 1/8 of the price?
Edit: he’s the one playing off side when they play together.
I’m a strong no for ghost. I’d rather have Kulikov if they’re checking down that far.
We already have a better version of Ghost with Barrie. Oilers need a 2/3 who can move puck and play D. Chycrun fits that bill to a tee. I don’t like the oil trading away either Bouch or Bro as they are the 2/3’s through the heart of the Nurse contract
Lots of negative votes so hope that means that the asking price is close. The Oilers have the best top 6 group in the league. They have the best bottom 6 they have had since 2006. They don’t need help at forward. They need a number 2/3 defence man. I can’t see that a Karlson deal works without major repercussions i.e. not signing Draisatl to his next contract. Who else fits the bill as a number 2/3 without mortgaging more of the future? The time to win is now.
Yes, I think it matters very much. Many d-men “can play both sides” but not many don’t lose at least some effectiveness on their off side at the NHL level (some, but not many).
That’s essentially the deal that I “proposed” a month ago – at the time the price was apparently 3 1st round equivalents and I was not prepared to give a 3rd or to include Broberg.
Kulak needs to be moved out in connection with a Chychrun acquisition – that woucl wait until the off-season and Bouchard/Broberg and be 6/7D in the 11/7 formation but Broberg needs legit full time 3rd pairing to start next season and should be legit ready for 2LD well before the Chychrun contract is up.
Watching Vegas tonight – so far they look horrible. Well maybe horrible is a bit strong – but they don’t look dangerous and they seem to be making a lot of errors.
Just noticed today that Boston’s Goal DIF is +92. The next highest is +44. That’s bonkers. They have an astounding 91 points in 56 games. And The fact that they have a higher goal dif. than points this late into the season is ridiculous.
Yeah, they’re on pace for the 2nd best season since Expo 67 (the 1976-77 Canadiens with the best).
I guess they’re actually on pace for the best season ever points wise, though the schedule is 2 games longer these days (also, those kind of teams usually take their foot off the gas a little bit towards the end of the year).
Just added a couple more quality pieces too. Impressive.
Interesting to see how the Oilers fare in their two upcoming games against them.
Tampa in 2018/19 finished with 128 points, 21 points ahead of second place and had a goal differential of +105, when the next highest in the league was +62. They got swept in 4 by the Columbus Jackets who squeaked into the 2nd Wild Card spot in the last week of the season for their first playoff birth ever.
President Trophy winners have a very poor track record in the playoffs and seem to more often have a very poor playoff if they win their President Trophy almost uncontested.
Only two teams have won the Cup since 05 with a Presidents Trophy in the same season. The veteran Wings in 07/08 only 2 seasons after running away with the regular season in 05/06 to lose to the OIlers in the first round. And the Blackhawks in 2013 (which was only a 48 game season).
Nice post. I made a similar, albeit less detailed, post yesterday.
Playoffs are a brand new day.
Happy Birthday to us! I also got LT’s book today.
Go Flamers!!!
why?lol
I do hope the Knight lose in regulation…..
Yes but I’m still not cheering for the Flames.
Not ever
Correct
I wasn’t cheering for the flames, I was cheering for the Knights to lose in regulation.
Also, if the Oilers needed the flames to win game 82 for the Oilers to make the playoffs, I would presume that is something that would be hoped for, no?
why? lol
Oh, was Yamamoto good?
I missed most of the game but saw he scored plus comments about trading him etc.
Assumed he didn’t do much even with the goal, but he’s 2nd star of the game.
So he was pretty good? What did I miss?
McDavid was better.
I was a little mystified by the choice of Yamamoto as 2nd star. I didn’t notice him much tonight, although credit is due for tucking the loose puck in the net.
Admittedly, for me, Yamamoto is the asset to trade and clear cap space. I don’t see him being effective in the playoffs.
I have to agree with you:)
The Three Star selections tonight were a nod to the contributions of the “lesser lights.” Good choices, IMHO.
He was fine tonight. I would say Jesse was better and Yamo didn’t really deserve a Molson Star – I think they gave those out to the depth players who contributed – McDavid, Nuge, Drai, Nurse, Barrie were stars.
I don’t think the trade talk had anything to do with play on the ice tonight.
I’d choose Shore or Foegele over either of those two tonight for a Molson star.
For what it’s worth, Pittsburgh’s broadcast had McD, drai, Letang in that or.
He went finally went into the paint and played like he doesn’t want to get traded. Nobody mentioned Foegele for a star he scored a beauty and was robbed on a sure Goal. All 3 of the 3M squad played to their abilities tonight most satisfying game in a long time.
Thought to mention earlier that all the stone hands got in on the scoring tonight 😉
Oilers add juicy stuffing to a Letang sandwich. Good tilt.
LA pulls an Oilers. Give up a lead and lose in OT.
Kings blow it
7-2 Oilers!!! DOMINATED THE PENS in their barn!! Nuge gets to 600 Points, McD new personal record for goals, now at 46 goals (and 4 point night)
HAPPY BIRFDAY MEEE!!!
Happy birthday
Little sloppy that pk…but it is Crosby.
Yessa can’t buy a goal.
Where’s the starfish when you need it?
Chocolate?
I’m not exactly sure why Nurse is over 25 minutes tonight (and counting) and Deharnias is at 10 minutes, Broberg 12 minutes, etc.
I actually think he plays fine at 24 minutes or so (and doesn’t need them cut down) but a lighter night, for cumulative fatigue reasons, would be beneficial – at least I would think so.
Agreed, but I’m not so sure that I would call this a difficult 20+ mins
I saw Nurse as very effective tonight. He made good passes, stick checked well, and was his (as usual) physical self. Coaches rewarded his performance with extra ice time.
I agree he played well, as he usually does.
A few less shifts and a higher workload late could be considered a reward – helping him maintain energy levels as the season continues and in to the playoffs.
LAK give up the tying goal with 39 seconds left. THey’ll bank a point – heading to OT.
Pic tomorrow morning, ‘Mcdavid Penalty shot goal against Casey Desmith (jockstrap, tendons, ligaments also in photo)’
If a three-goal lead is the worst lead in hockey, does that make a six-goal lead twice as bad?
I think not.
With two minutes remaining, I’m more comfortable with the 6-goal lead. 5-goal lead is okay, too.
makes sense
Coming in off the right side, I felt more comfortable he was going to score than the last two shootouts where he came in off the left side.
More relentless physical defending by Broberg
Another nice play by Broberg
This is a fun game. More like this would be great.
Summarizing!
Lachance did not do that goal-scoring thing he usually does, but he did draw a helper on Youngstown’s GWG. He gets a chance at redemption tomorrow and overmorrow.
2 whiskers away from this being 6-3. No need to stop coming at ‘em. Jay is aware
Attaboy, Connor! It’s okay to pad your stats with a 6-1 lead, others do it all the time
Ryan selling out to protect the lead there 🙂
Pens keep trying to score by cheating.
Refs got together to decide it was no goal on the ice.
Now the review to determine if they will over-turn.
We are going to have to cheer for the Flames tonight against the Golden Knights.
Nah.
Why?
Have you looked at the standings lately?
Vegas will fade would love to see the Flames not make the Playoffs.
You could also cheer for an unlikely but catastrophic center ice clock rivet failure at opening face-off, but everyone approaches spectator sports differently I guess.
I am cheering for a two point game. No Bettman points.
I will cheer for a 2 point game. I’ve actually taken to cheering for Minnesota lately, which is a bit of a dangerous game but would hopefully lead to Calgary finishing just out of the playoffs
Woody showing no mercy I like it
Pure cock. Oilers need some more of that.
The Oilers video guys is exceptional on those challenges. Impressive record.
Well there was that one time In the playoffs.
The bench helped. They are on the line.
Video Replay Guy!
No chance they are wrong if they are challenging this – it must be clear.
LOL.
Devils have come back to tie it with Kings – early in the 3rd.
Nice high stick Jesse.
Has it been mentioned? 600 points for Nuge!
Would’ve been awesome if he got to 600 in the last game on the same point as Drai and McDavid. Would have been the 600-700-800 point puck!
Lets see lots of Jesse, Shore, Foegele, McLeod, Bouch, Broberg, Deharnais, etc. this period.
Not a back-to-back for fairly quick turnaround for Sat morning…
