That was one ugly hockey game. Tristan Jarry was horrawful, Darnell Nurse was bafflingly poor, and the Edmonton Oilers kicked themselves in the nuts with a steel-toed boot repeatedly in Anaheim last night.
The club also played Connor McDavid 22 minutes and Leon Draisaitl 20, so the tanks won’t be full tonight against the Los Angeles Kings. The Oilers need these points, and this is the kind of execution they can muster? I don’t know if this team, if this coaching staff, if this defense, is going to make it to the finish line. What an unholy mess.
WHAT TO EXPECT IN FEBRUARY
- At home to: TOR (Expected 1-0-0) 0-1-0
- On the road to: CGY (Expected 1-0-0) 0-1-0
- On the road to: ANA, LAK, SJS (Expected 2-1-0) 0-1-0
- Expected Record: 3-2-0, six points in five games
- Actual Record: 0-3-0
- Season Record: 28-23-8, 64 points in 59 games
The Oilers sit in third place in the Pacific Division now, the Anaheim Ducks have passed them despite having two games in hand on Edmonton. The LA Kings also have two games in hand, and trail the Oilers by four points. Tonight’s game is a big one. By the way, the Seattle Kraken are one point behind Edmonton with a game in hand.
- Nuge-McDavid-Hyman 12:07, 6-6 shots, 1-1 goals, 63X, 7-3 HDSC
- Roslovic-Draisaitl-Savoie 9:07, 9-5 shots, 1-2 goals, 60X, 1-2 HDSC
- Podkolzin-Henrique-Frederic 6:31, 2-3 shots, 45X, 1-1 HDSC
- Mangiapane-Lazar-Frederic 2:16, 0-1 shots, 0-1 goals, 72X, 1-0 HDSC
The best news on the night was Matt Savoie’s 1-2-3, and he moved his five-on-five points-60 up to 1.14 for the year. He is 2.08 points-60 since January 1. Music! His passing ability is exceptional, I thought he played a whale of a game last night. The top line was flying all night, the trio collected two goals and three assists with high-end skill. The Draisaitl line did good things despite the 1-2 GF-GA line, I’d like to see them again. It’s difficult to rip the forwards on any level this morning. I liked the lines and the performance.
- Nurse-Walman 15:10, 8-9 shots, 1-4 goals, 69X, 5-2 HDSC
- Ekholm-Bouchard 13:18, 5-5 shots, 2-1 goals, 57X, 4-3 HDSC
- Stastney-Emberson 13:12, 6-3 shots, 74X, 3-1 HDSC
All three pairings had the puck going in a good direction and the expected goals were solid to excellent. Tristan Jarry stopped 20 of 25 shots (.800SP) and Connor Ingram got to three of four (.750). My main culprit on the night was Jarry, who I do like as a goalie but believe may be losing the starting job in real time.
My culprits were Jarry on the first goal (Ian Moore), collective brain freeze on the second GA (Bouchard late to slot coverage), too juicy on the rebound by Jarry on the third GA, a terrible effort by Jarry on the Zellweger goal, Nurse passive coverage and weak five-hole by Jarry on the tying goal and lots of watching, Nurse chasing on the GWG. Lots of poor play, and Nurse had a poor game, but Jarry sunk the battleship sure as hell. I think Connor Ingram is the starter, folks. I’m going to casually place this here, deep in the bowels of the post. I think Kris Knoblauch may be in trouble as Oilers coach. He faded the GM’s signings in summer, he was stubborn on those blasted stretch passes and gapping, and now his team puts out that effort in an important game. Maybe it’s from the break, but rust never sleeps and this Oilers team naps at intervals.
CONDORS
On The Lowdown today, we will have Bagged Milk and your comments on the Oilers efforts. noon to 2pm Sports 1440 and You Tube.

I think everyone in the league should take note: Andrew Mangiapane scored a goal and an assist in about 12 minutes.
We’ll begrudgingly let him go for a 2nd rounder now.
This…. winning.
Feels weird.
But I’ll accept it.
That’s 5 points in 2 games for Matty Savoie.
Oh brother! He’s Bonafide!
There art thou!
Drai under 15 minutes. Would say that’s a good thing but 97 played 20. Chasing 100 points maybe but perhaps Drain still ailing.
That’s a point in less than ever 4 minutes……
Good response by the team. Easily the most complete effort they’ve put in all year.
Who’d have thought if you played the entire game, you’d get a good result. People don’t say that enough.
The aggressiveness they showed in the 3rd was something we have not see much of this season.
I’d like to say this was encouraging, but we’re 3/4 of the way into the season amend the Oilers have yet to show any consistency.
Where’s Will Ferrell?
LA’s goaltending tonight is as bad as I’ve seen in a long time..
LA tonight looked a lot like the Oilers last night.
Not really – the Oilers were the MUCH better team at 5 on 5 last night (and tonight).
Is Panarin even playing in this game? Haven’t noticed him at all.
Often so dangerous but Drai is so good holding the puck near the offensive blue and making a play – him and Bouchard.
Too bad we can’t play LA more often.
LIGHT EM UP
Time to roll the 3rd and 4th line and give Connor and Leo a break.
LA rink looks half empty. Lots of Oilers fans. I take it some Edmontonians went on a California mini-vacation for the week?
That was an absolute bomb from Walman!
Savoie should be on Drai’s wing full time (I’ve said that since the summer).
He CAN play there and help support Drai and produce and it allows Podz to play on the 3rd line and his style of play helps drive a 3rd line and makes it effective.
Lets not forget Podz had 10P in 22 playoff games and most of that was away from Drai.
I’ve seen Leon remark about liking playing with Podz because hes a first to the puck type player and it compliments him well. 27 might be choosing that pairing who knows.
Bouchard leads NHL d-men in points right now. Nice to see.
Yet he likely won’t get a sniff of The Norris Trophy.
because NHL.
He doesn’t help his case by waiting until December+ every season to start paying attention.
I’ve rationalized it as, if he didn’t have his flaws he probably would have went top 3 in the draft, and we would probably face him in the playoffs, doing us dirty like zubov.
Bouchard started scoring at above P/GP on October 21st, his 2-way game returned November 10th.
I like that Leo picked a spot and let loose without waiting to dust the puck off or pass off the shot.
Shooter mentality.
Mc-note! Hundo! 💯 ☝️🚨🚨
So Drai CAN shoot and score still.
Maloser
Vasily Podkolzin is such a better bang for your buck over Holloway.
So much so that the offer sheet is a wash.
Having him play on the third line adds important balance to this team.
Now when Kap comes back he should play on the fourth line and add more balance.
The Oilers could have had both. It was NOT either/or.
Broberg, Holloway, McLeod, Desharnais, Podkolzin, Stuart Skinner (and Emberson)…all would have been entering the prime of their careers. Add in Bouchard. Over 1/3 of the roster at the peak of their careers as McDavid and Draisailt and Nugent-Hopkins and Hyman became 30 something.
Jeff Jackson and Stan Bowman effed that away.
Desharnais is close to an ideal #6/#7 regular season defenseman.
4 kings were ahead of the oilers forwards in offensive zone top of circle or closer and they were all coasting in there 50/50 puck.
I don’t care what score is i’d be giving them shit.
Ingram has been sturdy through 2 periods
Oilers awake for two consecutive periods. When they keep their heads in the game they’re a really good team.
Goals from Podz, Emberson, Mang helps.
But the key is defensive structure and puck management – I know if the first period LA has zero slot shots.
McDavid looks like he is going to go on one of those 8-12 game supernova streaks where he creates almost every shift and puts up 2.5 PPG
And Bouchard.
And Hyman.
There’s a buzz in the air.
Bouchard is tied for 3td in point in the NHL in 2026 – ALL players, not just d-men.
That was coming in to tonight.
I dunno lads and ladies.
You have to be a different level of sourpuss to think the ticket to the WCF isn’t already punched.
the good guys are scoring at their best pace in three seasons… and that’s with Frederick and Mang playing as double agents.
The Ducks winning 80% of 1 goal games after coming back 80% of the time is a stat line that reminds me of when many folks talked themselves into the Tocchet System being a wunderkid moment. Or Calgary in 18/19. Heaters of the highest order.
For the Nucks a heater so great it ruined the franchise.
Just checking in. 5-1, eh? Looks like the impending LA comeback is going to be one for the ages. Or, y’know, a typical Oiler Thursday.
So everybody’s happy now.
Ingram made a timely save….sorta. Flubbed shot. Whatever. Very happy.
Now I want 10.
HYSAITL!! 🚨
Frederic just outbatled 3 guys behind the net and set up Podz for a shot.
Yep. Nice hustle!
He’s won a few battles this game and last. Also set up two grade A s last nite. Looks to be getting to more battles.
AROUND THE WORLD! 🚨
Doughty looking a lot like nurse on that one.
McDavid went for a smoke as he circled the net LoL
4-1..!!!
If Stu Skinner and the Oil did that we’d never hear the end of it. LA has already forgotten it.
I’m not even sure what to think about that goal….
Mangi heating up! Just in time for trade deadline!
I guess Drai didn’t want to score one of the goals of the year….
LET THEM EAT BREAD 🚨
Breader than the other breadman tonight!
Mangiapane….what a snipe….oh dear
Nice rip Mang – 2 point night.
Good kill!!!
If Nurse didn’t have bad luck he’d have no luck at all
Some people are just never happy
I concur.
Let’s just have la win, get this thing over with, fire KK and get Doeber in and we can start fresh. The coach is clearly out of ideas and isn’t willing to try anything else.
Go Oilers!
Agreed. I think they need a new coach. It’s going to take a loss tonight to force the gms hand. If they win, they just keep doing this dance.
they need a break up, if it’s a loss that’s needed to correct the ship let’s just get it over with.
I’m looking to extend the lead, get the regulation win and then to Saturday afternoon.
Do you believe status quo is the way to go?
Status quo? No.
At the same time, I’m not going to hope for my team, currently in a playoff spot, to lose.
Ya… I’m with ya.
Geez Nurse in the box for 4 minutes.
Addition by subtraction?
I don’t think that was a penalty
It was bloody.
Which is why it got called
Partner says of Frederic: ‘Dude has such a punchable face, eh?’ lol
Mathieu Olivier thinks so
Up 2-0 early…what could possibly go wrong..?
Jinxed!
Frederic needs Podz to stand up for him AND score for him. Ha.
LA sucks so hard lol.
Podkolzin from Mangiapane!!!
Kuemper looks worse than Jarry LoL
Pods!!!! LA getting Oilers level goaltending!
