A texter to the Lowdown yesterday asked me for my opinion about Paul Coffey’s impact on the Edmonton Oilers defense. My answer was vague, while acknowledging the team has improved in terms of goal suppression and five-on-five GA recently. How much better are the Oilers with Coffey in the fold? It depends on how much time you believe it takes to implement changes.
WHAT TO EXPECT IN MARCH
- At home to: CHI, VEG (Expected 1-0-1)
- On the road to: UTA, SJS, LAK (Expected 2-1-0)
- At home to: COL, VAN (Expected 1-1-0)
- Expected Record: 4-2-1
- Actual Record:
- Season Record: 38-28-9, 85 points in 75 games
I have the Oilers finishing with 94 points, we’ll see if they can do it and if that’s enough to win the Pacific. Should the Anaheim Ducks win first place, both the Oilers and Golden Knights would have to consider it at least a mild disappointment. I understand the idea that winning the division isn’t the ultimate goal, but it reflects some things these Oilers aren’t good at every year. Like consistency.
PAUL COFFEY’S IMPACT
On the day Edmonton hired Paul Coffey, the team was allowing (five-on-five) 2.78 GA-60 and owned a 47 percent goal share. The SA-60 (25.32) and HDCA-60 (11.52) were part of the pre-Coffey resume. Expected GA-60 was 2.72 and expected goal share was 51 percent.
Since Coffey was hired, the GA-60 (2.91) is higher, but the goal share (51 percent, 53 expected) is also higher. Here’s where Coffey can claim real success: Edmontons SA-60 is 24.86, a small reduction. The HDCA-60 is 9.45 per 60, miles better than previous totals. The suppression, reflected in shots and high dangers surrendered, is obvious.
Let’s give Coffey two weeks. If we begin the Coffey era 2.0 at March 1, the GA-60 is 2.69. Slightly better than the pre-Coffey numbers (2.78), and the goal share climbs from 47 to 49 percent. Small rise, and fueled by an outstanding 9.62 HDSCA-60.
Coffey’s Oilers have clipped HDSC’s by 2.0 per 60. Frankly, the GA and goal share should be better, and the goaltending in recent games has finally come around.
I can’t tell you Paul Coffey was solely responsible for these improvements. In fact, my guess is there are other elements in play (Connor Murphy, better health for Jake Walman, etc). The Oilers are using the middle of the ice more, the forwards are offering more attractive passing lanes coming out of the zone and the entire forward group is tracking back like demons.
Coffey has helped. All of which makes the verbal surrounding his exit last summer even more baffling. The Oilers moved on from Coffey last summer, and if you read the tea leaves from connected verbal there was a sense Coffey’s deployment of the defense in the final was a root cause of the Florida Panthers win.
What changed? I don’t know. What I do know is that the next time an Oilers player, coach or management person leaves town, I encourage you to take note of those who take the opportunity to be critical of said individual. At best, it’s issue framing unnecessarily (the guy already lost his job). At worst, it’s using the power of the written and spoken word to protect the individuals in management and coaching who remain. That’s a choice made, but it’s your choice not to buy it.
On the Lowdown today, Bagged Milk will help us tee up the Oilers-‘Hawks and we’ll talk plenty about the lineup changes taking place as Trent Frederic returns to the club. I’m pro Josh Samanski, so we’ll start there. Noon to 2pm, Sports 1440 and You Tube.

Akey back in lineup and Brown out.
Howard with Hamblin and Griffith.
Jarventie with Marjala and Hutson.
Clatt 4LW.
Pickard starts.
Knob was on with Jim Rome today and Rome brings up Drai by saying “out with a lower back injury” and they chatted from there. I wonder if Rome meant to say Lower Body and not Lower Back?
Curlock says the new college signing, Michaels, potential is 4C
He is defensively responsible
Needs to work on his skating but his issues are not structural so there is hope
Stauffer asked, could you see the future as Samanski as 3C and him as 4C?
Curlock said, Samanski for sure but was a lot less sure about Michael as 4C
Ekholm played 4 minutes less than another other D at 5 on 5.
Did they note anything on the broadcast? Did he leave the game for a bit and I didn’t notice?
I didn’t hear or see anything
I believe he has been playing less since he was a game time decision a few games ago with an illness
No idea if there is something still lingering
I’ve been told (but have not fact checked) that he only played two shifts in the 2nd period (but was back for 8 shifts in the 3rd period).
oh-oh
I do want to win the division but, truth be told, with their +27 goal differential and 30 regulation wins, Utah is simply better than Vegas/LA. I do think the Oilers should have no real issue in a playoff series against Utah but they are a tougher opponent than LA/VEG.
One of the other things that concerns me about facing Utah (and I too am confident that we can win vs them) is that it is the first time in the playoffs in the new city.
Remember Vegas went to the final in their first season.
It helped that franchise get established with diehard fans
I don’t trust Bettman
The Utah goaltending is a crapshoot I like our chances with a super motivated Ingram facing his old team especially when they’re paying half his salary .
Vegas is the better team, its just their goaltending has been failing them. If Hill or Hart get their games together Vegas would be, I think, the tougher out. It’s a big if, of course.
Utah has a really good, mobile defense group and Vemelka has been giving them great goaltending over the last month especially. But they don’t have any players who are as good as Marner, Stone or Eichel.
It’s all about Peaking.
I foresee some tasty Peking Duck on our playoff menu.
And some Shark Fin Soup?
and Streaking
Carter Hart must be hurting for cash as he must be the only goalie in the league without having a paint job on his mask.
Line of Henrique – Jones – Samanski
zero offensive zone shift starts 5v5
100% xGF%
1-0 Goals
clap clap clap
Samanski-Jones 2 bigger bodies opening up ice for Henrique who’s always had quick hands.
Im never getting the stand down orders.
Logan Stanley flopped like fish after a hit from a 170 pound Archie. I can’t stand that wuss reminds me off Neil Sheehy
I don’t know what this has to do anything but Josh Archibald took out his legs with a very dirty play.
Connor Murphy on his time in YEG
it’s been awesome. It’s a team id been eyeing for a while
SIGN THE MAN
Dublin Ohio Laddy Smid
Sign yes, dollar and years dependant. No NMC whatsoever.
My thought is $4MM or under for 4 years max then I remember that Ceci signed 4 X $4.5MM……
And it’s a very thin UFA class.
Gotta offer him a lowball deal before late June and hope he takes it. Hopefully late June is very shortly after our season ends.
No NMC. 2 years max. Find a young guy instead if at all possible.
Brown nosing his old boss for his retirement contract.
I have to give Jarry props for a great game. I’ve been critical of his play but he stoned the Hawks on some dangerous one on one chances.
Some leaky defence this game. I hope they learn lessons from this match and tighten it back up for the next match against the Kniggits who say “Veee”
He was very solid tonight – some really strong saves and he looked good doing it.
We were close to back to back shutouts with one each although when that happened earlier in the year, it turned very bad shortly after so maybe a good thing it didn’t.
5 games! We’re streaking!
A few too many open looks but the shot suppression is real and it’s spectacular.
2 points is all that matters if we can get both goalies in the right frame of mind for the playoffs then Bob’s are Uncle.
It was bad luck they didn’t get Jarry a shutout.
True but they also had some good luck with the Hawks missing the net on some point blank attempts.
Sooooo many misses.
Podz from the ex-Hawks
To clinch a 3-1 vict’ry
Oilers tied with Ducks
Nice apple for Dickinson vs his exes.
Not a Picasso but they got ‘er dun.
A win is a win. Works for me.
PodzGoalsIn
Podzilla puts this thing to bed
Fiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiive..!!!!
So sloppy in the 3rd
97 needs to be better there in D zone.
It’s funny to see teams give up their forecheck when Walman gets the puck in the dzone.
He definitely has his mobility back.
Could sense that coming. Team is back to playing loose defensively in this period.
Look at this fourth line.
I think they’ve played the whole game in the offensive zone
Nashville doing the business so far!
Also flames and kraken!
Has Mangiapani even gone to Chicago yet? Or is he still in transit?
He’s injured but traveling with the team on this roadie.
Utterly absurd call.
Are they saying the best player in the world is not in possession of the puck in that scenario? Then who is? No one? You cannot put yourself offside!
I said that was offside in real time before the goal was scored. They only showed one replay at the arena but he lost control. That was offside.
The puck was on his stick the whole time. He had it under control. Terrible call. The refs having mercy on the Hawks.
The puck was definitely not on his stick when he crossed the line and it was because he lost control.
It’s difficult to truly understand the rule. But just because the puck isn’t on his stick doesn’t mean he’s not in control of the puck. The call truly could have gone either way and it was a risky review for the Hawks to make. The officials gave them a break.
I don’t think its difficult to understand the rule and, while I dod agree that just because the puck isn’t on his stick does not mean he is not in control, in this case, I think he did mishandle/bobble the puck and lost control.
Can you explain how he lost control? I only saw one replay. All i could see was the puck not physically on his stick. Was it more than just that?
The puck not on his stick is assumed as no control. Same as makar not having control entering the zone without the puck on his stick to allow a teammate to clear.
Even though in both cases the player was in control. Just not by the wording of the rule.
I dont believe thats true
Control in the nhl rule book is defined as:
“The act of propelling the puck with the
stick, hand or feet. Control of the puck is
not lost when contact with the puck is
made by an opponent, the boards or the
net, provided the player in control of the
puck continues propelling the puck.”
Also, two completely different situations. Makar wasnt about control. It was about physically touching the puck only.
Not to split hairs. But control of the puck was in question in both situations. Makar purposely pulled his stick away from the puck to uncontrol the puck. …so no control by the nhl interpretation.
Same as mcdavid not having the puck on his stick while crossing the blue. Again by nhl interpretation not mine.
I believe in both instances both players had control and do not like that it’s left up to a replay to determine control. I believe control should not be reviewable and solely left up to human ( linesman) opinion.
In my opinion (and presumably in the opinion of whoever made the replay decision), McDavid lost control of the puck as he crossed the blueline – it was a bobble/mishandle to my eye.
I agree the nhl determined it was not in control by mcdavid. Same determination as with makar…. I’d like in both cases the determination be made by the linesmen and not reviewable.
The Makar determination notwithstanding, I think it was the right call tonight as, at least to me, McDavid mishandled that puck causing an off side. He was also mishandling the puck all night long, as an aside.
No. He may still have had control. Control didnt matter in that case. He just wasnt touching it.
Agreed. But nhl does not.
I just looked this all up, re: makar, etc. i stand corrected. they say Makar did not have control “because he wasnt touching the puck”, which is crazy to me. I fully agree that play was onside, but only because he wasnt touching the puck, not because he “lost control”. This league man.
I don’t think McDavid had control – I think he clearly lost it.
I don’t think Makar had control either but I don’t know what was in his head – tonight was much more clear – in my opinion.
I’m not sure what there is to explain – its just what I saw (in real time and on the one replay they showed in the arena) – it wasn’t on his stick as he crossed because he bobbled it//lost control.
That answers my question perfectly. If you say he bobbled it (i couldnt really figure that out on the replay i saw), then the call makes much more sense in my mind.
He slows the pass down, in control before the line, in clear possession, enters backwards, then touches the puck again.
Is control merely the puck on your stick?
Because Makar did not. And how many goals in history would be eliminated if the puck was not on the stick of player entering the zone?
Watch the play in real time. When precisely does Connor lose possession?
It’s crazy to me that offside can be slowed down to make a ruling. The game is not played in slow-mo! If it cannot be determined within 30 second or less in real time, then it should be determined inconclusive.
I think he lost control (it was not on his stick and it was not intentional) before he crossed the line.
That’s not an easy pass to execute by McDavid
offside ach
That’s a BS call. He had control
They don’t make up fake rules on the fly for the Oilers like they do for some other teams.
The Makar Rule for instance
Ooooh that’s a goal scorers goal right there
Another messy skating backwards offside situation.
Cale Makar, anyone?
Makar was different he put the puck across the blueline while his teammate was offside, and supposedly didn’t touch the puck until after that player tagged up
McLeod right up there with celebrini in his 19 year old season.
What Savvy is doing at even strength is crazy
since Feb 15 he is 2.95 pts/60 at 5v5
24th in the league
other notables
my boy Sam Carrick at 2.81
Viktor Arvidsson at 4.59
Dylan Holloway 3.56
Taylor Hall 3.02
2avoie! 🚨🚨
Why you hate goals, NHL?
Easily replaceable, dime a dozen Savoie with 2 goals tonight.
Whose job is Savio taking?
Savvy’s Seconds!
Awful trade
Savoie is just money these days
Money
…and offside no goal
Bad habits creeping in on the pp. Good save Jarry
That’s gold, Jarry! Gold!
Just remember, Soup is going to be the meal until 2029/30.
I think I’m going to puke. Puke? Puke is a funny word!
Frederic’s speed draws a penalty?!
Jones is playing such a great 4th line game right now
Great on the forecheck, he’s getting so many puck retrievals. Keeping plays alive. Must be why coach is playing Bouch – Ek with that line
MATTY BANKSHOT!
Lucky bounce but they don’t say how, just how many!!
Brutal trade.
Roslovic with the rare (for him) primary assist
Yay Henrique! I’m listening on the radio, it was a very happy description by Cam.
REBOUND RICO! 🚨
Don’t sweat the Henrique!
Unless you somehow let him get a BREAKAWAY, then sweat all the details haha
Henry off the schneid!
