Oilers at No. 38: Raphael Lavoie

I had him No. 26, this is excellent value.

Adam Sherren: “Lavoie is a big physical force who is that old fashioned power forward.” He is a strong skater and has a goal-scorer’s touch. Aggressive, a force.

Corey Pronman: He’s 6-foot-4, skates well for a big man and has a high skill level.

Scott Wheeler: He gets to the net at will and he has the ability to finish plays in tight by pounding home rebounds or using some impressive stick handling to beat goalies with a deke.

YESSSSSSS. I’m not exaggerating to say if we took him at 8 I would’ve been okay with it. We could not make another pick today and I’ll still be ecstatic with this draft.

First saw him dominate last yr at the U 18s, with his feet and especially shot, could be a special top 6 RW

  2. Munny says:

I worry about his offense carrying over, but he was the highest rated F on the board.

SJS trades 41 to VGK for 48 and 82

  4. Lowetide says:

The QMJHL had some fascinating players this year, Lavoie is among my favourites. Very pleased.

  5. silasbengtsson says:

Bummed to not pick Robertson. Hoping on Keppen at 85.

  6. Munny says:

    Lowetide,

I wonder if Legare will drop far enough.

As a Haligonian, Moosehead and Oilers fan , im ecstatic about this pick !!!!

So, you’re saying that you would usually Lavoied picking from the Q, but this year is an exception?

  9. Pretendergast says:

Hawks out here drafting towers with skill, probably a good idea

  10. OilClog says:

20 goals in 23 payoff games, how did he fall so far? How did the Oilers not fuck this up? IMO he’s better then Benson and Yams. Kid is the goods

  11. Munny says:

    Daly a busy body

  12. McSorley33 says:

The ** 2 ** preceding teams take goalies! and Kenny Holland hits this beach ball out of the park.

    Kudos

I’m excited for you! I wish we had gotten McMichael too, though. 😉

  14. frjohnk says:

    52 goals in 85 games.

I know nothing about the draft but do know this is a nice stat for 6-4 right shooting forward.

  15. Munny says:

Miller trade made official. Price was a bit dear. Would you have paid that, Godot?

  16. Death By Misadventure says:

    Very happy with this.

Adding high end F skill to our prospect pool is just whats needed.

  17. Lowetide says:

Professor Q: So, you’re saying that you would usually Lavoied picking from the Q, but this year is an exception?

    I giggled.

  18. OriginalPouzar says:

My guess is we just saw exactly why Holland was comfortable taking Broberg.

Of course, not the same tier prospect as, say, Zegras, but Lavoie could very well be just as productive in the NHL and be ready just as soon.

    Love it.

  19. leadfarmer says:

This pick should shut up a lot of doubters

  20. Professor Q says:

    Lowetide,

I wonder if Legare will drop far enough.

We unfortunately do not have a 3rd this year.

  21. slopitch says:

Really like this pick. I wanted Boldy but getting Lavoie at 38 is a great compromise!

  22. jake70 says:

Microscopic sample size (2 playoff games sitting in Halifax offensive end back in April) – I agree with those reports. The 2 that caught my eye was ability to position himself for loose pucks (or pucks found him) in tight, and his scoring hands.

  23. Alpine says:

Miller got a conditional 1st. I think he’s worth that but it’s tough to trade first rounders when you’re a non-playoff team. Props to VAN for taking the risk.

  24. Death By Misadventure says:

    Munny:
    Lowetide,

I wonder if Legare will drop far enough.

    I’d love that.

    45 goals is no fluke.

Professor Q: We unfortunately do not have a 3rd this year.

    We needed that for Puistola

  27. Lowetide says:

If the Oilers are going to trade Jesse today, the NYR pick at No. 49 might be the spot.

  28. Yeti says:

Would hope for more than just that pick? Or perhaps not.

  29. Pretendergast says:

    Professor Q,

do we not have 1 of the 2? I thought we traded the higher one to Florida but have the other one from NYI

  30. npanciroli says:

Man draft is turning out well. Vancouver got hosed on Miller trade IMO.

  31. StixMalone says:

Maybe a pick and a prospect at least….

  32. Munny says:

Rangers get the Oil King Robertson.

  33. flyfish1168 says:

2 big player over 6′ and over 200 lbs that can skate with skill. I would say we did well. Heavy playoff hockey type players

  34. Munny says:

    Fagemo gone to LA.

  35. Bag of Pucks says:

Is that what competent hockey operations looks like?

    I must be dreaming.

  36. JamesL says:

Lavoie could have gone in the mid-first round. He was discussed as an option barely outside the top ten.

This seems like a phenomenally lucky result!

Sorry about Fagemo, LT. I’ll be following his career.

  40. leadfarmer says:

    We have 85

  42. Professor Q says:

EDIT: I was only looking at the first 15 picks. My bad.

    reminder

The Oilers have six picks in the 2019 draft: No. 8, No. 38, No. 85, No. 100, No. 162 and No. 193.

  46. Munny says:

    Good pick by FLA there

  47. Oil2Oilers says:

Lavoie just stated he is more comfortable on the wing than center. Which is a good fit for need for the Oilers.

  48. Death By Misadventure says:

    Bag of Pucks:

    The kiss of death hahaha

  49. leadfarmer says:

This is a perfect pick to counter some of those 5’10 170 lb D coming into the league

  50. Rich M says:

Like this pick. Good value, adds forward depth and heaven knows we need it.

  51. Munny says:

  52. StixMalone says:

  60. Professor Q says:

A lot of 19-20 year olds being picked, and the broadcasters liking it due to getting them into the team’s system earlier. I suppose two philosophies which could be shared by the same team?

    Andy Dufresne,

    lol, nope, guess not.

A few nights ago I saw Dreger and Lebrun holding court on a restaurant patio in Vancouver. Seemed totally at ease and enjoying themselves. Both are surety two of the best

  68. Pretendergast says:

    StixMalone,

Me and a friend noticed that too! We found out they have name bars for all the guys and quickly press them on to a jersey right before handing them off. The predators first rounders fell off it was such a rush job.

  75. Rube Foster says:

Reposted, a little slow on the draw, tough to keep up with LT during his “Christmas Season” 🙂

In a what have you done for me lately world, Lavoie was historically great when the stakes were highest and the hockey was hardest.

20 goals in 23 playoff games is not just great, its historic. My hope is that Lavoie’s playoff run demonstrates that the light bulb clicked above his head and that this kid has it figured out.

Lavoie is an excellent skater with above-average straight line speed and enough agility to weave around or fake opponents out of position. He is extremely strong on his skates and can maintain puck possession under physical pressure, using his long reach and wide stance to shield the puck. He can play center or wing, although he looks more comfortable on the wing.” – Steve Kournianos –

I’ve read some scouts compare his game to Rick Nash.

Credit to Jaxxon for putting this guy on our radar early on during Lavoie’s playoff run.

If you would’ve told me at the beginning of the draft we’d grab Broberg and Lavoie I would have thought that meant we’d of had to give up some value by making some trades.

Outstanding first two rounds and remarkable patience by our new GM.

Bouchard, McLoud & Broberg, Lavoie have the potential to make a significant impact on our roster much sooner than later!

Let’s hope for a Smourkov like return with our pick at 83!

  76. Munny says:

this draft has really been punishing foot speed thus far. We might get a shot at Legare.

  77. Munny says:

Three straight Dmen bets by Yzerman.

  78. Munny says:

    Munny,

Although we haven’t been shopping in the slow aisle at all either.

  79. OriginalPouzar says:

I’m so excited for Lavoie – I remember some unreal skill plays at speed in the playoffs – some amazing goals.

This really makes up for the no forward at 8 – I think Holland had a sense that some high skill/talent/potential forwards were going to be available at 40 with a run on D-men in the 1st – I think he read this draft perfectly.

  80. Oil2Oilers says:

Broberg was a little bit of a reach, Lavoie was a little bit of a scoop.

Both can skate, both have a reasonable chance of becoming NHL players.

So far the Oilers have not shot themselves in the foot and the later round picks don’t offer the ammo to do much harm.

  81. Reja says:

flyfish1168: I hope his drive and desire to compete keeps growing.

As long as he drives to the net banging in Connor and Leon rebounds with his NHL hands. Anybody that wins the Mike Bossy award has good hands and can shoot ( hopefully)

    Regretzky:
I’m so glad TSN 1260 decided to go with a 4 hr Basketball show today. Driving to cottage and there is no draft coverage on the radio. Total fail. This is Edmonton, the draft is sorta significant here! >:(

I agree. Strange. Must be a ratings thing?

  128. Munny says:

    Dorofeyev now gone.

  129. Crazy Pedestrian says:

    Rondo:
    MaybeDorofeyev

    Nope… Gone to Vegas

  130. Kmart99 says:

85gp – 52G 53A – 105pts. Best offensive player left on the board, great pick. No Mitch Moroz tho!

  131. Bag of Pucks says:

Andy Dufresne: Time for a Seasonal Name Change to Bag of Sticks!

Better than Bag of Balls. That’s for sure!

  132. flyfish1168 says:

hoping for another power forward that can score and skate at our 85th pick

Hey now, FIBA 3×3 is an important event to cover, especially today!

I’m surprised they did not at least have coverage for an actually relevant current event, such as the FIFA Women’s World Cup.

  134. Todd Macallan says:

Damn, would’ve liked Graeme Clarke at 85

  135. Munny says:

    CBJ trades 81 to FLA for 104 + 114

  136. HT Joe says:

    leadfarmer:
This pick should shut up a lot of doubters

Yes… I’ll shut up now (with an inward grin – really nice pick)

  137. Psyche says:

The surprising thing with TSN 1260 is a few of their staffers are at the Draft in Vancouver. Seems like they only did pre-draft coverage on air. They paid for their staff to be in Vancouver, surprised they didn’t do partial coverage on air today.

  138. Professor Q says:

Bag of Pucks: Better than Bag of Balls. That’s for sure!

I just picked up a bag of balls today! An acquaintance collects them from the golf courses as they play.

  139. Andy Dufresne says:

    Reja:
    Reja,

Are you referring to yourself in the 3rd person now? 🙂

  140. Rondo says:

    Crazy Pedestrian,

    Anttoni Honka

  141. Munny says:

    Munny:
Don’t know if Cajkovic or Murray will survive till 85.

Still on the board with only 3 picks in-between.

  142. pts2pndr says:

Professor Q: We had three actually, but now only one. I was only looking at the first 15 picks so it was my mistake. I didn’t see the 80s picks.

No sweat I love draft day!

  143. ArmchairGM says:

    flyfish1168:
hoping for another power forward that can score and skate at our 85th pick

    Murray or Keppen perhaps.

  144. HT Joe says:

Bag of Pucks: Next up. TMac shredding their prospects

I can’t wait for him to refer to them as “that team in black”

  145. Munny says:

2 picks now. Good odds to get one or the other

  146. Munny says:

    Canes take Honka

  147. Andy Dufresne says:

32 LC Blake Murray, Sudbury (OHL). Big center with plus speed and a scoring touch. A July 2001.

37 RD Anttoni Honka, Jyp (Sm-Liiga). Draft Analyst: Swift skating puck rusher who knows how to handle the puck and has the kind of mobility that keeps forecheckers honest.

38 R Maxim Cajkovic, Saint John (QMJHL). Fantastic skater has impressive potential, played for a poor team that limited opportunity. His offensive output is miles behind his potential ala Peyton Krebs.

  148. Andy Dufresne says:

    And then there were 2

  150. JOFA says:

    Thanks Andy😊

  153. Yeti says:

    Munny:
    Canes take Honka

    Two Finns in two picks.
And then Kokkonen just before us

  154. Rondo says:

    Goalie

  155. Alpine says:

    Ilya Konovalov, goalie.

  156. Younger Oil says:

    Another goalie, are you serious….

  157. SlickOil says:

    Konovalov

  158. Munny says:

Second time Sportsnet/nhl.com has gone to ad before a Canadian team picks.

  159. Andy Dufresne says:

    Gretzky!, Gretzky!, Greztky!

Why do I get the feeling they may reach here?

  160. Regretzky says:

    Psyche

    They’re too drunk to broadcast.

  162. ArmchairGM says:

WTF? A goalie Kretz? When Murray, Cajkovic and Keppen were just sitting there?? WTF!

  163. Crazy Pedestrian says:

    SlickOil:
    Konovalov

Really??? Come on oilers… this team’s drafting is so up-and-down it’s ridiculous.

  164. Munny says:

July birthday is the first thing that leaps out.

  165. Reja says:

Andy Dufresne: Are you referring to yourself in the 3rd person now?

    Lol that would be Jimmy.

  166. Andy Dufresne says:

    ArmchairGM:

DO they think one of these 3 will still be there at 100 (15 picks form now) ?

  167. Yeti says:

I think LT’s desperately searching for enough info on this guy to build a new thread.

    Jimmy says…..

  170. Alpine says:

.930 in 43 games for Lokomotiv. Craig’s on it!

  171. Tapdog says:

holy crap, I stopped mowing the lawn for that?????

  172. Regretzky says:

That was such a great commercial break.

  173. Professor Q says:

Holland promised that he would get a goalie. Why is there so much surprise?

  174. Yeti says:

    New thread is up

  175. JOFA says:

    6 feet tall 😄

  176. Tapdog says:

Andy Dufresne: DO they think one of these 3 will still be there at 100(15 picks form now) ?

Good chance the way this draft is going..

  177. GordieHoweHatTrick says:

Goalie. The other position we are deep. Glad we traded a 3rd for Hayden – only not to sign him. Glad we traded a 3rd rounder for Petrovic so he could play 10 games. Hopefully the future is less stupid than the past.

  178. Andy Dufresne says:

DO they think one of these 3 will still be there at 100 (15 picks form now) ?

Do they think one of these 2 will be there at 100?

    10 picks from now.

  179. ArmchairGM says:

Andy Dufresne: DO they think one of these 3 will still be there at 100(15 picks form now) ?

If so they could’ve got 2 of them.

So far they’ve spent 2 of their 3 picks on positions that are already overcrowded when they should be focusing on forwards. I think this is Gretzky and Green’s last draft as Oilers.

  180. ArmchairGM says:

Andy Dufresne: Do they think one of these 2 will be there at 100?

    Cajkovic gone.

  181. godot10 says:

    Munny:
Miller trade made official. Price was a bit dear.Would you have paid that, Godot?

Not a first round pick. I’m looking for bargain prices. Tampa signed Coburn to hold place for Foote, so they became less of a match.

  182. Munny says:

    godot10,

    Agreed. Definitely too rich.

  183. godot10 says:

    Pretendergast:
    Kings shredding this draft

Yeah, but #ThoroughlyMediocreCoach who refuses to let D the zone passing into the middle.
