2019-20 Game 48: Predators at Oilers

We’re past the halfway pole and the Edmonton Oilers remain valiantly in the playoff race. I remain at the ready with my heartbreak country songs (“the money ran out and the engine blew”) and Armageddon movie references (“When the Wind Blows”). I’m beginning to think we’re not going to need them.

At the same time, let’s not get ahead of ourselves. The four games before us, all at home before the end of January, offer another challenge. I think Pierre Lebrun’s usage of the word IF yesterday (“I believe Edmonton, if the Oilers stay in the race, have Pageau on their target list“) places the Oilers chances in perspective. That’s about right.

THE ATHLETIC!

The Athletic Edmonton features a fabulous cluster of stories (some linked below, some on the site). Great perspective from a ridiculous group of writers and analysts. Proud to be part of The Athletic, less than two coffees a month offer here.

OILERS AFTER 48

  • Oilers in 2015-16: 19-24-5, 43 points; goal differential -23
  • Oilers in 2016-17: 25-15-8, 58 points; goal differential +7
  • Oilers in 2017-18: 21-24-3, 45 points; goal differential -29
  • Oilers in 2018-19: 23-22-3, 49 points; goal differential -10
  • Oilers in 2019-20: 24-18-5, 53 points; goal differential -3

Edmonton is now losing touch with the 2016-17 team, but we expected that to happen sooner. A win tonight would have the Oilers on a 94-point trajectory and that’s the playoffs.

ON THE TENS

  • First 10 games: 7-2-1
  • Second 10 games: 5-4-1
  • Third 10 games: 5-4-1
  • Fourth 10 games: 3-6-1
  • Current 10 games: 4-2-1.

OILERS IN JANUARY

  • Oilers in January 2016: 2-2-2, six points; goal differential -2
  • Oilers in January 2017: 3-3-0, six points; goal differential -2
  • Oilers in January 2018: 2-4-0, four points; goal differential -11
  • Oilers in January 2019: 3-3-0, six points; goal differential -5
  • Oilers in January 2020: 3-1-1, seven points; goal differential +3

This remains the best January of the McDavid era, no matter what happens tonight. A fabulous road trip, one we’ll remember for many reasons, has us here. Edmonton needs the homestand to shine just as bright.

WHAT TO EXPECT IN JANUARY

  • On the road to: BUF, BOS, TOR, MTL, CAL (Expected 2-2-1) (Actual 3-1-1)
  • At home to: NAS, ARI, CAL, STL (Expected 1-2-1)
  • Overall expected result: 3-4-2, eight points in nine games
  • Current results: 3-1-1seven points in five games

Before the month began, I predicted just three points from the home stand. That’s kind of tragic, but the Oilers weren’t playing too well and there are good teams on the schedule before the end of the month.

OILERS FIVE PER 60 SCORING

The Oilers have a problem tonight, but it’s also an opportunity. I expect the team will keep the No. 2 line together, as that trio is gaining some real traction. McDavid-Neal also likely stays together, and one imagines Dave Tippett will ponder Archibald, Chiasson, Gagner and Nygard as possible options on McDavid’s other wing. I picked Nygard because of the speed, but also because of the success of the duo (in 52:37 five on five, it’s 6-2 goals, 51.9 Corsi).

LOWDOWN WITH LOWETIDE

At 10 this morning, a busy day ahead and we get things started, TSN1260. Jonathan Willis from The Athletic will join us and talk about the recent road trip and the home stand to come. Andrew Peard will talk Oil Kings and trade deadline results and your comments are welcome. 10-1260 text, @Lowetide on twitter. Talk soon!

Sharks tie it up in the 2nd (against ARI).

  3. Bank Shot says:

Mcdavid looking real good with the smurfs there. 🙂

  4. Lowetide says:

    Archibald scored.

  5. drglen says:

Oil needs a goal here… or PP. Oil have pulled ahead in possession and ‘danger’ but needs to convert.

  6. Gerta Rauss says:

    Archie buries it

  7. OriginalPouzar says:

That’s a nice play between McDavid and Archie – great play by McDavid but solid finish by Archie.

Kass’ AAV just went down by $250K.

  8. drglen says:

    GOAL… ARCHIBOLD.

    I stand corrected.

  9. jp says:

    Beauty Archibald!!

He’s on a bit of a streak, guess that’s how he scored 12 last year..

  10. BornInAGretzkyJersey says:

    Ohhhh Archie!

  11. OriginalPouzar says:

Forsberg trying to fill the highlight reel for the night….

  12. jp says:

There was no need for that. lol

  13. Gerta Rauss says:

Klefbom with a beauty full court pass on the tape to McD to get that puck into the offensive zone

  14. norm_klassen says:

Forsberg trade haunts Oilees more then it does Washington

  15. jp says:

Such a nice outlet by Draisaitl. McDavid misses that.

  16. Bank Shot says:

    Archibald….pure talent. Give the man $4 X 4.

That Bouchard goal was great too.

Funny how he went end to end without any great speed. He just kind of meandered around everyone.

  17. OriginalPouzar says:

Hey, Martin Erat has 17 points in 18 games wearing an A in the Czech league last year and is almost at a PPG pace this year with 2 points in 3 games.

  18. norm_klassen says:

If Kass ends up with 20 Goals 40 points he worth 3.5 and not a penny more! Love Kass but come on😁
So 4*4 cause oiler inflation price

  19. drglen says:

Hey just checked the environment Canada website.

It’s -31 right now here in Edmonton. !! Still a good crowd.

    1

  20. norm_klassen says:

    OriginalPouzar,

That’s awesome I always thought he was great! Forsberg is sick wish oil made a trade like that. If Ales Henskey stayed healthy maybe he could have had a return like that! But alas not meant to be

  21. drglen says:

Good position and clear there by Nurse… good job forwards back checking.

Bear has also looked really solid tonight. Simplified his game a bit I think.

  22. OriginalPouzar says:

Canucks pull their goalie with just under 5 min to go down 3-0…..

  23. BornInAGretzkyJersey says:

I like when Drai bull rushes guys like that.

  24. drglen says:

I’ve been watching Russel with Jones on D quite carefully tonight. What seems to be happening is actually on Russell and not Jones. K russel is in some battles but he loses those battles and that pulls Jones over to cover, leaving openings and these extended cycles ensue.

  25. OriginalPouzar says:

    Geezus Forsberg – fancy man.

  26. OriginalPouzar says:

    Bank Shot:
    Archibald….pure talent. Give the man $4 X 4.

That Bouchard goal was great too.

Funny how he went end to end without any great speed. He just kind of meandered around everyone.

Channeling his inner Boris Mironov – love that guy.

  27. drglen says:

I don’t mind the Forsberg crafty show. Why not?! It’s pro hockey. Of course, one of these days he’ll get bowled over cause he’s so busy being crafty. But that guy is a show in and of himself!

  28. jp says:

Oilers not much good 6on5. Connor and Leon need a little more space.

  29. OriginalPouzar says:

VAN now down 4-0 so all the scores are turning up aces so far except ARI up 3-2 on SJS.

  30. OriginalPouzar says:

Was that Forsberg’s fancy move hand?

  31. drglen says:

Tipp not happy with Neels slashing penalty.

  32. jp says:

    Neal takes surprisingly few penalties.

    This isn’t a great one.

  33. drglen says:

Oil are letting preds hang around in this game. I hope it doesn’t haunt them.

  34. OriginalPouzar says:

Nice to see Kailer on the 4 on 4….

  35. drglen says:

Let’s see the slashs called on yamo, connor, and Nuge now.

  36. Bulging Twine says:

The NHL changed the coincidental penalty rule because the 80’s Oilers scored too many 4 on 4 goals, having them play 5 on 5 instead.
    yep, good times

  37. OriginalPouzar says:

    Great period!

    Fun!

  38. jp says:

Oilers owned that 4 on 4. Man

  39. BornInAGretzkyJersey says:

    jp,

Felt more like a make-up call than anything.

  40. Munny says:

I did not hate the first half of that period.

I’m not a huge fan of the second half of the period.

  41. jp says:

    BornInAGretzkyJersey:
    jp,

Felt more like a make-up call than anything.

Yeah, meant not at a great time.

  42. Munny says:

    A galvanizing moment.

    I agree.

  43. jp says:

    OriginalPouzar:
McDavid and K. Russell with chemistry – maybe McDavid’s perfect winger is already on the team……

Too bad this couldn’t actually be true. Russell anyway.

  44. drglen says:

geez… kinda uncomfortably close camara work on archibold there rogers TV… what’s up with that? That was weird.

  45. jp says:

    drglen:

Bear has also looked really solid tonight. Simplified his game a bit I think.

I’ve seen him lose quite a few battles. He sure contests every inch though.

  46. jp says:

OriginalPouzar: Channeling his inner Boris Mironov – love that guy.

    He was alright.

    Not so unlike Klefbom actually.

  47. who says:

    OriginalPouzar:
Poor communication by Nurse and the forward on the outlet once they got possession and the d-men weren’t able to change – leads to goal against.

McDavid losing his man just inside the blueline didn’t help.

  48. jp says:

    OriginalPouzar:
Nice to see Kailer on the 4 on 4….

Not the first time. Tippett has instantly (well, 2nd game on) used him in high leverage situations.

  49. docweb says:

Geez…I will be glad to finally get rid of all of these Christmas snacks and get back to Cheezies!!

  50. drglen says:

cant give up an early goal here.

  51. OriginalPouzar says:

Drai with a clear cut breakaway for the insurance goal but must misses the net – damn.

Now Gagner puts it over the next from a prime scoring area.

  52. drglen says:

oh dreisaitl missed on breakaway… think Rinne got a piece

    Gagner misses from slot.

    Cmon guys.

  53. drglen says:

Dear Connor. Please stop helping your teammates… just skate around a few guys and shoot yourself and score.

  54. drglen says:

Watch out for Josi here… Duchenne has also been quiet and is due. Don’t sleep guys we need an insurance goal here.

  55. jp says:

Chiasson was sooooo close on that one.

  56. drglen says:

I like the shot by chaisson on that play. Good decision. Good save.

  57. Munny says:

I’m glad Smith is making all these “fighting off” stops, but on the other hand they greatly worry me.

He looks like a goalie at the very edge of what he can do.

  58. drglen says:

Nashville on their heels here… Tipp needs to shorten bench.

  59. Munny says:

That was a Howie Meeker hip squeeze into the boards. Textbook.

  60. OriginalPouzar says:

So doesn’t seem like that shoot first mentality for Connor is going to start tonight…..

  61. drglen says:

    take the shot there connor.

  62. Suntory Hanzo says:

Seems like the shoot button on 97s controller is faulty.

  63. OriginalPouzar says:

Chiasson has been watching Forsberg highlights….. too bad he doesn’t have Forsberg skill….

  64. drglen says:

nice play there. leon to bear, takes shot.. look for greasy rebound. more of that please.

  65. jp says:

    docweb:
Geez…I will be glad to finally get rid of all of these Christmas snacks and get back to Cheezies!!

I can’t take your love of Cheeses seriously if you still have Christmas snacks around. 🙂

  66. OriginalPouzar says:

    docweb:
Geez…I will be glad to finally get rid of all of these Christmas snacks and get back to Cheezies!!

3 ounces sweet potato base – some broccoli/cabbage slaw, kholarabi, 3rd of a cup of black beans, 150g butternut sqush with 3 ounces of chicken and 4.5 ounces of salmon on the side – great hockey game dinner/snack – so good – savor it!

  67. who says:

    OriginalPouzar:
That’s a nice play between McDavid and Archie – great play by McDavid but solid finish by Archie.

Kass’ AAV just went down by $250K.

Nice little pick by Neal at the blueline on the entry.

  68. drglen says:

we need 2 point regulation win here.

  69. Suntory Hanzo says:

Could Ya mo be there be our Pisani?

  70. OriginalPouzar says:

Ya, Kailer moved in to Duschene.

  71. jp says:

    Awwwwww.

    It was interference, but awww.

  72. drglen says:

they are calling that Pick on Yamo… that’s a cheap call.

    Look for even up call.

PK needs to come up big here.

  73. OriginalPouzar says:

Huge clear by K. Russell – the D had not got the change when the previous clear hit the linseman….

  74. Munny says:

    jp:
    Awwwwww.

    It was interference, but awww.

The “proper” call but ticky-tack in context.

  75. jp says:

Really like Tippett’s line juggling, when he does it.

  76. drglen says:

is the Mac Drei line reunited?

  77. drglen says:

Ok there’s the make up interference call.

  78. OriginalPouzar says:

Stupid play by Grimaldi – Nygard is like a young Marchant with scoring chances.

  79. norm_klassen says:

Had to call that one eh refs

  80. Munny says:

well they couldn’t really let that one go after setting the precedent with the Admiral.

  81. jp says:

Too bad Nygard isn’t doing more. Like him but he’s not earning another contract.

Haas likely gets one if he can add PK to his resume. He deserves a shot to at least.

  82. drglen says:

have we seen Jones this period?

Nyggard lowest TIO on the team, which is surprising because he always seems to be in the play.

  83. Munny says:

drglen: have we seen Jones this period?

    Yes.

  84. OriginalPouzar says:

Oilere are awful at taking advantage of a stickless player, why?

  85. drglen says:

gotta say that was a lame powerplay.

  86. OriginalPouzar says:

    Time to lock this down!

  87. docweb says:

OriginalPouzar: 3 ounces sweet potato base – some broccoli/cabbage slaw, kholarabi, 3rd of a cup of black beans, 150g butternut sqush with 3 ounces of chicken and 4.5 ounces of salmon on the side – great hockey game dinner/snack – so good – savor it!

    Sounds good but….Dammit I’m I Doctor not a Lawyer!

  88. Munny says:

    Keep skating like this

  89. OriginalPouzar says:

Larsson has looked better as the game has gone on – very solid 3rd period.

  90. jp says:

This Oilers team isn’t far. (that is, they don’t need 2 wingers AND a 3C)

  91. drglen says:

Is is fAbro? good D on macdavid there.. that guys pretty good.

  92. Derek says:

    jp:
Too bad Nygard isn’t doing more. Like him but he’s not earning another contract.

Haas likely gets one if he can add PK to his resume. He deserves a shot to at least.

I’d keep them both, though I kind of have a thing for bottom 6ers that can skate. That way even if they’re not Bergeron defensively their wheels always give them a chance to get back on the right side of the puck.

  93. Munny says:

Even there where McDavid is travelling so fast that if it was me travelling that fast and I was that close to the end boards, likely those boards are going to the involved in some way in me coming to a complete stop…

And McDavid is faking which way he’s going to cut with the puck.

    Our ungodly McDeity…

  94. OriginalPouzar says:

Don’t think it was mentioned but that was a wonderful transition pass from Klef to Mcdavid on the Archie goal.

  95. drglen says:

Preds getting some shots here… D are joining the play looking for the EQ. We are living dangerously here.

Who does he play to win the game?

  96. OriginalPouzar says:

Come on Gaetan, get that puck deep!

  97. OriginalPouzar says:

Geezus, what a drive to the net by Connor but Rinne with a Smith-level of flamboyance.

  98. jp says:

    Really loving Bear and Yamamoto.

Holland consistently graduated guys to material roles with the Wings. Nice to see from some Oilers who worked up from the minors.

    Wonderful chance by McDavid.

  99. drglen says:

What a move and What a save… just like kevin called it. Great Great move. Big time major league save Rinne.

  100. Munny says:

    Woulda coulda shoulda

  101. OriginalPouzar says:

Oilers keep pressing for offence in the dying minutes while protecting the lead – keep playing down in the Predator zone….

  102. drglen says:

Ekblom big time clear for Nash.

  103. jp says:

    drglen:
have we seen Jones this period?

Tippett’s trying to work him in but he still doesn’t trust him at all.

Another amazing chance. And the PP.

  104. drglen says:

oh,, how could we miss. Leon.

  105. norm_klassen says:

This is the blueprint for playoffs?!!!!

  106. OriginalPouzar says:

I thought there was an empty net and then, all of a sudden, RInne was back in – leads to too many men – huge.

  107. Munny says:

Okay that’s the trhid time this period we didn’t score when we should’ve.

At least we get a PP out of it.

  108. drglen says:

looks like we will win this one. Too many men call on preds… we should… be able to win this.

  109. Yeti says:

drglen: We are living dangerously here.

In case you like obscure prog rock! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vzwUuwTQS3E

  110. OriginalPouzar says:

As an aside, although he’s still not 100%, the real Ryan Nugent Hopkins, complete with offence, has been back for a good 3 weeks now..

No, he’s not a “1st overall pick offensive guy” but the real RNH is a substantial top 6 player along with plus special teams – huge to have him back.

  111. jp says:

    OriginalPouzar:
Larsson has looked better as the game has gone on – very solid 3rd period.

Quietly 2nd in TOI (ahead of Nurse and Bear).

  112. Munny says:

What are the refs doing? did the Preds try to put a ringer out there?

  113. OriginalPouzar says:

    jp:
This Oilers team isn’t far. (that is they don’t need 2 wingers AND a 3C)

    Jimmy????

  114. norm_klassen says:

Empty net curse is official busted !!

  115. OriginalPouzar says:

Drai with his second of the night and third point.

After scoring 50 goals with ZERO empty netters, he’s got 3 this year, I think (maybe just two).

  116. jp says:

Did Draisaitl bank that? Or manage to roof it himself?

Edit: man he has a lethal shot.

  117. drglen says:

Leon pots the empty net on the hapless but game predators.

  118. Munny says:

    That was painful lol

But I’ll take the win. This has been a very good 5 game stretch by the Slick.

Oh and the ice looks better when its -400 outside.

  119. OriginalPouzar says:

That was a heck of an empty net snipe by Drai – ha!

  120. BornInAGretzkyJersey says:

That may have been the most difficult goal scored on an empty net. Ever.

  121. Nit64 says:

    HH yesterday:

“The Canadiens just did VCR a huge favour. They now have two chances to take over first place in the Pacific.”

That aged well. 3 pts back of Yotes.

  122. Bulging Twine says:
  123. drglen says:

    take the two points quietly.

Hey ride smith until smith hammered, and he will.

  124. jp says:

    Huge win tonight.

That was an impressive period and a half defending a one goal lead. The team looked mature almost.

Another nice game for Smith too.

  125. Munny says:

    BornInAGretzkyJersey:
That may have been the most difficult goal scored on an empty net.Ever.

I don’t know. Bobby Orr has an absolute killer.

  126. drglen says:

too bad arizona with the big win tonight.

Oil needs to beat Arizona at home.

  127. jp says:

    OriginalPouzar: Jimmy????

Has he been saying that? I haven’t been keeping close tabs.

  128. OriginalPouzar says:

Another 2 points in the bank which put some more distance between EDM and NSH and points gained on all except ARI and WIN.

Plus: regulation win – we are killing the first tiebreak!

  129. jp says:

Derek: I’d keep them both, though I kind of have a thing for bottom 6ers that can skate. That way even if they’re not Bergeron defensively their wheels always give them a chance to get back on the right side of the puck.

I wouldn’t be at all opposed. But if you pencil Benson and Yamamoto in for next year there aren’t that many open lineup spots.

  130. Younger Oil says:

Draisaitl has gotten a lot of flak at times since the start of December or so for lack of effort/production.

Since December 1, he has 25 points in 20 games, a 103 point pace for a full season.

Just shows how much we can take for granted sometimes.

    • BornInAGretzkyJersey says:

My take is it’s less about the points he’s been racking up, and more about the amount of goals he’s been on ice for by the opposition.

Thankfully, he’s back to looking more like Selke-Leon than the saloon door.

  131. tcho says:

To me, Archie’s performance tonight adds to the evidence of just how expendable Kassian is. If Kass is willing to sign a decent contract, you sign him. If not, he walks. If not, you sign a Maroon, or move in an Archibald, or…. The Oilers have, unfortunately, put themselves in a position that they can’t afford to overpay for complementary pieces such as Kass IMO.

  132. jp says:

    OriginalPouzar:
Oilers keep pressing for offence in the dying minutes while protecting the lead – keep playing down in the Predator zone….

McDavid, Draisaitl and Nuge getting big big minutes protecting leads for a little while now. At the expense of Sheahan.

  133. jp says:

    Younger Oil:

Just shows how much we can take for granted sometimes.

That is impressive. The issue is he’s -19 in those 20 games.

Luckily he appears back to being good Leon for a little now.

All for Kassian signing a team friendly deal but do you honestly think Archibald keeps the tkatchucks in line?me either.

    steelymac17,

Does Kassian keep the Tfuks of the world in line?

On Twitter this morning, I shared some of the Condors’ recent(ish) line/pairing combinations’ shot and goal shares, I’ll transcribe them here too, with some other details as well for those who’ve already read the tweets:

Thanks very much for this stuff.

I don’t think that Kassian keeps the Tkachuk’s in line – as we’ve seen.

    hickey99,

I think you may have something here. In fact, I believe there is an opportunity for the Oilers to fuel the BoA while at the same time being classy. The Oil Kings do a Teddy Bear Toss for Santas Anonymous. The Oilers should arrange a stuffed Turtle Toss with proceeds going to support ALS research for Calgary’s Assistant GM, Chris Snow.

Huge win. Smith needs to get some rest because he’s starting the early game Saturday if we’re to make the playoffs a win would inch us closer to the dance.

  141. JimmyV1965 says:

jp: Has he been saying that? I haven’t been keeping close tabs.

I actually think we just need two forwards. A 3C would be nice, but two wingers would work just as well and likely be easier to acquire. We do this and the team is as competitive as any in the Pacific.

    OriginalPouzar,

It will be interesting to see how everything goes at the allstar game. But our 1st game after the break is at home vs the Flames… a test for Kass, shame for turtle.

    LET’S GO OILERS, LET’S GO!

At 20 years old, on “one of the worst teams in the AHL”. Really puts the achievements of that Humphrey Bogart guy that HH goes on about into perspective. 😉

14 games to the trade deadline

    When is your window?
Holland: when you have McDavid your window is now.
My aim this year was to make the playoffs.
Anyone who gets into the playoffs has a chance.

This mindset leads me to believe that if the Oil are in it at the trade deadline, Holland will add.

    Right, fair enough.

IMO even one winger would/should make a huge difference.

3C would be very nice. Currently at -38C, but env can says we’ll reach 3C before the trade deadline

  147. russ99 says:

    tcho,

It was a nice goal, but that was mostly McDavid.

Archibald is a decent player but he’s still a bottom 6 energy PK type. If Archibald, Nygard and an accurate shooter were all one player, then we’d be on to something.

Kassian adds things that are not as measurable (at least until we get trackers) physicality, defensive responsibility, tough play on the wall to keep own zone sorties going.

I wouldn’t break the bank, but I’d bring him back on a reasonable deal.

  148. russ99 says:

    Nit64,

    Yikes.

Here in Chicago, it’s been balmy for the last month, but it’s sure coming, you guys just get it first and get it worse. I’m sure a good ole Alberta clipper is inbound in a week or two.

Personally happy for this big peek behind the paywall. But especially for same day material that’s way more than the line or two that LT says is OK.
