I used to get up Saturday mornings early, maybe six o’clock or so. My parents were asleep, brother too, and I’d set up the saw horse (the net); the goalie was two buckets (usually Varsol, my Dad used it when he worked for Husky) and I’d be the Bruins and the Canadiens were always the opponent. Sometimes my brother would play with me, but he had to be the Bruins so I would check down to the Toronto Maple Leafs.
In Maidstone, in 1972, the air was so cold on winter Saturday mornings you had to take your time before running too fast. Your lungs had to adjust to the cold, otherwise you might have a tough time breathing and have to go in. I hated going in. Once you’re in, then going out again seems like a big chore. I’d play until someone would call me in for breakfast. We lived 17 miles north of Maidstone, sometimes minus 40 (Dad wouldn’t let me go out if it got too cold) and we had goats, no running water and for a time no elecricity.
We didn’t have a lot of money, Dad couldn’t find work for the first year or so after we moved to Saskatchewan. When Husky hired him, Mom and Dad’s vocal tones were brighter. I heard fewer late-night whispers and early morning solemn. We didn’t have much money when I was a kid. No complaints, Mom and Dad were top drawer parents and it wasn’t their fault they brought a worried child into the universe. They did the best they could and they taught me what love and a good relationship looks like. A child could do a lot worse, you know. Every child deserves a good Mom and a good Dad. I was a lucky fellow.
Hockey was a way of finding common ground in a world I didn’t understand. We went from living in the lower Mainland, and seeing Skana the Whale at Stanley Park twice a year to an isolated part of the world where the coyotes howled, the northern lights danced, and your imagination was the only thing available to fuel entertainment. I could talk hockey and baseball at school, I could listen to the radio and read the newspaper (plus The Hockey News when I was able to buy it from the Rexall Drug Store, thanks Mrs. Stenmark) and stay informed. It was a connection.
I read years ago about the Khaira family. They came here from India, and found that putting their kids in hockey was a way to involve themselves in the community. It was a first blush introduction to Canada for them, and of course Jujhar Khaira flourished and made it all the way to the NHL. That’s a beautiful thing. Hockey in Canada is a big damned deal. It connects all of us. It makes conversation easy and allows us to keep warm and beautiful memories alive.
I won’t be putting the sawhorse and buckets out 17 miles north of Maidstone this morning, but I’m there in spirit. It’s Hockey Day in Canada. It is a day to celebrate our national obsession. I love the game and the lore, and miss the people I’ve lost along the way. I’m grateful to be here, to anticipate Connor McDavid dancing like the northern lights across a long gone Saskatchewan sky. Enjoy the beautiful game, ladies and men. It connects us in a meaningful way.

BAKERSFIELD

Friedman mentioned in the post game that the intention is to carry 3 goalies to the Olympic break – he was paraphrasing Mark Spector’s report from earlier today
Edmonton closes its pre-Olympic schedule with one road game in Calgary, and barring the unforeseen, will carry all three goalies through the break.
https://www.sportsnet.ca/nhl/article/oilers-leon-draisaitl-takes-leave-of-absence-for-family-illness/
Jake Sanderson slammed Ottawa’s goalie after tonight’s game. Ullmark might be close to coming back but Pickard would be a much better back up. Merlilainen has been the best of their goalies, and he has an .860 save % and let in 6 goals on 19 shots tonight. If I’m Bowman I’m giving Steve Staios a call and seeing if Edmonton might be able to pry an asset out of them
Yes
I think a modest return is not unreasonable for no other reason than the laws of supply and demand
Goalies like Pickard slip through waivers on a regular basis, but there may be an opportunity at the moment to get something
I’m fine with Stan taking his time here – waiving Pickard is the last lever I pull, and that may not come now until after the Olympic break
Hw can try. But any competent GM knows they can get Pickard for free if they wait a couple of weeks. Desperation level would have to be very high
If there is more than 1 team interested a competent GM may view a modest price paid as good value
Ottawa may not give an asset (I don’t think they would) but Phllly could knowing that Ottawa could/woul/d/might/will put in a claim ahead of them.
Our tv turned radio crew tonight presented an interesting stat/trivia. The last time two Oilers scored 2 goals each in a period was 2017 against Anaheim in game 6 of round 2.
Which players? You’ll guess one easily, not the other…
Kassian?
Great guess. No, but he had a goal that night in the 7-1 drubbing.
Drai and Letestu.
Yea, hilarious because I forgot Letestu played for us.
Roslovic another former CBJ
Draisaitl a hat trick and 5 pts, Letestu 4 pts.
Another crazy part of that boxscore is that 13 of the 19 players had a point that night. This included Kris Russell, Griffin effin Reinhart, Slepyshev, D Desharnais, Lucic and Maroon.
The ones who didn’t?
Eberle, Nuge, McDavid, Caggiula, Pouliot, and Gryba.
Nice win
That’ll smarten up everyone’s counting stats, especially Jarry
Both Ingram and Jarry have a .907 sv% with the Oilers now.
Jarry just improved to 4-0-1, .907, and 2.57 GAA as an Oiler.
So refreshing to not consider goaltending a weakness
Give Bowman some credit. He fixed a big question mark.
I do. He also upgraded a younger version of Kulak in the process.
it is interesting, though, to see both Stecher and Kulak playing 20 mins a night for their new teams.
Would MUCH prefer Stecher to Regula.
Connor Ingram is also at a 0.907SV% as well.
I know the team likes him but Calvin Pickard only has a 0.871 and really should not be in this 3 goalie rotation. There’s a lot of nice guys in the sport but holding roster spots for players who aren’t pulling their weight just won’t win the cup.
Sorry I should be clear that I was referring to Jarry/Ingram exclusively. I have repetitively posted here how poor
Pickard has been this season, based on metrics like % quality starts and goals saved above expected.
I don’t think there is any 3-goalie rotation, at least for games – I think its Jarry and Ungar.
I’m not sure how they work Pickard in to practice reps at all but I wouldn’t think he’d play any games unless there is injury.
At some point, Pickard will need to be off the roster.
Freudian slip… Jarry and Ingram
A great way to celebrate Nugethousand Eve!
Been holding this in: Jack would almost certainly have ‘ruined’ the shutout for Jarry. #verysuperstitious
Well done boys!
Nice game by Jarry.
Agreed – well-earned bagel!
Hronek has done a great job against McDavid for the most part.
1st line to start PP again 🤦
Keep ’em sharp?
They haven’t looked that sharp
Hence why they need the reps – its a different unit without Drai.
It’s been a while since I “needed” a win, personally.
Told the misses, I could use a good game. After years and years of asthma and tests, 2/3 of our kids are highly allergic to dogs.
We have three.
Tolipilo.
Tomatillo.
Tall mojito.
got there in the end.
Sigh, served up on a bread board
Why not leave the 2nd pp unit out there more than 30 seconds. It’s 6-0. Build some confidence in the other players.
Also was nurse hoping for a whistle with that shot. I don’t understand why you take that shot
Just logged in to say the same thing. Major fail by KK. Hyman, Bouch, and McDavid don’t need any more padded PPT points in a 6-0 game on a back-to-back.
Plus, PP2 was more effective than PP1
The reason to play PP1 – Drai will be gone for 2-4 more games – that changes the unit.
I guess no matter what someone has to find something to complain about.
Interesting take.
The Roslovic line has four rush chances, at least four shots off cycles, has drawn two penalties and scored 1.5 times.
Yes it’s a slump buster team but this is exciting.
I wonder how much regret Jake DeBrusk is feeling since he signed his UFA contract with the Canucks? I known he’s getting paid but how much fun is he going to have with all the losing.
Healthy scratch a couple games ago ta boot. Can’t be happy how things are going
He may be part of the fire sale and be sent to brighter horizons.
I hate the Canucks. I’m happy to see them lose every game.
But. Those throwback uniforms are fantastic. I especially like the matte black helmets.
The downhill skate is oh-so-on-brand!
Jarry has some serious twitch in his movement.
Poorly worded. As in explosive and quick…
Elias P. wearing the green jacket after the 2nd with a -4.
And I thought the Nurse contract was bad
Canucks found their man!
So, will the Dy’s stay true to form and draft Swede Stenberg?
(to carry on on the tepid tradition of Naslund, Sedins, Pettersson)
that’s about all the interest I have in this sad, sad team – even the west coast media barely mentions them now
Just getting home. Anything interesting happening in the game?
😉
The boys tonight sure have Drai’s back. They are playing like they want him to know that he can take all the time he needs.
Gotta feel for TopoGigio, Lankinen too sick, so no mercy pull. 🥅
ruf.
There are few things more satisfying than unloading on the Canucks.
That cross check on Draisaitl two years ago was a huge factor in the SCF.
Screw those guys.
Nothing like a game against the Nucks to gain some offensive confidence.
Is Kapanen more productive this year than Holloway?
Discuss…
Both have had injuries…
Holloway 17:52 average TOI and PP time and 0.52 pts/game (this was pre injury)
Kapanen 0.69 pts/game (or more depending on period 3) with no PP time and 14:05 average TOI
Kap also cheaper and scored a series winning OT game. Just saying, there was no way he was shaking loose without the Holloway offer sheet
So is Podz.
Holloway is back practicing with the Blues after the high ankle sprain, but unlikely for tomorrow.
No Thomas, no Holloway, no Suter…Backup Binnington in goal. Should be another Oilers cakewalk, just like tonight. The Blues have not won three games in a row all year (they beat Carolina and Tampa with Hofer starting), and typically have laid a stinkaroo in the 3rd game.
Podz just delivers. Happy to see him get one. One of the most valuable Oilers since he arrived.
All for a fourth round draft pick. It’s nice to be on the side of this happening for us, not against us. Nice turn of events
Ahhh so sweet. It’s been so long…
PODZILLA!!
P6DZ! 🚨🚨🚨🚨🚨🚨
Podkolzin makes it 6 nil
10 might be in reach
Podzilla!
Check that it was a bounce.
I thigh McDavid back kicked it.
PutGoalsIn!
We want 10.
Kapanen’s first goal was set in motion by an excellent play by Nurse. He used his reach to sway it off a Nuck’s stick, Emberson retrieved and it was off to the races.
Delicious edge work from Nuge in game 999. That was special.
Summarizing!
Nicholl, Lewandowski, and Lafreniere each garnered an apple.
Berry, Park, Barnett, and Wakely were not resoupients.
Fischer served the second game of his two-game suspension.
To sum: the CHL’ers each got an assist, the NCAA contigent got nada.
Prospecting takes a break until Wodin’s Day.
Kasperi putting a KAPINEM.
Smoke these foo’s
Ahhhhhh dammit yes!
Nice high skill play from Howard right there.
Excellent effort from Roslovic all over the ice.
Nice creativity my all three players.
It’s one game against a slump buster but it’s been building. Let’s see that finish sustain.
They get a few more games to run now.
I think we found our third line center….. when he gets back from Germany
Kapppppyyy!!!! Kid is on fire!
🍑 🚨 🚨 🚨 🚨 🚨
Value contract Kapanen
So who is this new player Kappenan????
Jack be nimble, Jack be quick, the puck is off as soon as it’s on his stick.
Slow clap.
Kapanen will score again.
Well done!!
Boom! 3rd line gets on the scoresheet.
Oh my goodness!!! NUUUGE!
Wooot! That was a beauty! Ike with a great pass!!
Howard you doing? What a pass to Roslovic!
